New technologies allow us to tackle old problems. @GeorgiaTech teams, led by the college, are applying that lesson with large language models (LLMs)—programs that generate text from human prompts (e.g. chatbots)—and other technologies used to study human language. Santosh Vempala, professor in @gatech_scs, and alumnus Ben Cousins, PhD ACO, have received the Fulkerson Prize 2024 for their work on "Gaussian Cooling and O*(n^3) algorithms for volume and Gaussian Volume" (arxiv.org/abs/1409.6011) ! The prize is awarded by the Mathematical Optimization Society (MOS) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS) every three years for outstanding work in discrete mathematics. The award was presented at the International Symposium of Mathematical Programming (ISMP 2024) in July. Congrats!🎉
