All my AI startups are powered by @FAL so I invested in them They're one of the nicest people to work with, extremely fast inference times but also extremely fast support The founders are Turkish and now I have a special thing for 🇹🇷 Turkey and wanna visit Istanbul, hard working people that don't tolerate bullshit, I like it The business case for FAL seems real, I tried setting up my own GPU server on @LambdaAPI, it's fun and I got quite far installing Claude Code and letting it do everything But you still get stuck pretty fast, it's a lot of work to manage the layer between GPU and actually getting an AI model to output something fast while being able to scale up on demand (remember other startups with their "Queued" problems when you try run a job) So FAL has its role, it backs a lot of the AI apps you use because the founders want to focus on building useful apps, not mess around with GPU servers

Inference latency is the new page load latency. Amazon famously ran an experiment and found that every 100ms of added page load time cost them 1% in sales. Similarly, Walmart discovered that for every 1-second improvement in page load time, conversions increased by 2%. We're observing similar dynamics with our customers, but for inference latency. They report improved business metrics after switching to @fal for inference. AI has reached web scale—inference services are now a cornerstone of today's internet infrastructure. You should expect the same level of reliability from your AI systems as you do from other parts of your infrastructure. Your business is losing money if your inference is slow and unreliable.

fal raises the bar on GPU infrastructure and model coldstarts but we rarely talk about it. Instead, we spotlight the models we host and what people create with them. We’re operating in a net-new market we call generative media. Infrastructure is a critical piece of modern AI systems, but the generative-media problem space is much bigger. Infrastructure is table stakes. That’s a sign of true product-market-fit. Many infrastructure companies build complex tech and hope the market will celebrate their genius. So far, our users are ripping everything we build away from us, we need to be practical and meet their needs. No time for anything else.
Back in 2022 at @fal, we built our own lazy environment packing format specifically to optimize container startup times (we knew the workloads were going to be very diverse, and there was a GPU crunch so scaling to 0 and scaling back up fast when there is demand was key). The initial implementation used a custom archival filesystem to make stat() calls almost free by storing metadata at the front of the archive and enabling lazy file pulls with fast seeked reads. Since then we've shipped a bunch of cool improvements (probably forgetting some, but here are the main ones): - Hierarchical caching: We run 10-20 regions with thousands of host nodes. Local SSD caching is great, but leveraging peer nodes with 100 Gb network access (vs public internet/blob storage at 10 Gb) is even better. Now it's local nvme → peer nodes → S3 fallback. - Overlayfs for diff builds: We call this "Environment hopper" internally. The insight is everyone needs the same core dependencies, so we build on top of common base archives using overlayfs to save diffs and heavily compress them. Cache reuse rates are through the roof. - uv by @astral_sh for environment builds: We seriously considered writing our own package manager since downloading torch and other heavy packages is painfully slow with pip. uv was a total lifesaver. Should probably write a proper deep dive on this at some point - there's so much cool stuff in building domain-specific environment packing with high cache utilization and fast cold starts as the target.

Had so much fun discussing the @fal journey with @tjack!
Reaching the scale to host your own conference is a massive milestone for a company. Since @fal’s inaugural Generative Media Conference is this Friday, I sat down with @gorkem to dig into the last 3 years of their journey. Their 10/24 conference has an insane speaker lineup with lots of real-world use cases of generative media in action. The preview video below is just one example (we used fal’s platform to create all the visuals). Aside from the fun we had turning me into George Clooney and making a giant 3-ton Roomba cat destroy our podcast studio, what stood out was how far all of these models have come in the last few years -- and how easy it is to get started with fal and play around so many different options. There’s a ton of interesting technical optimizations and developer-focused decisions that made that experience possible, so it was great to hear Gorkem unpack all of their unique company and product building choices. One of the more interesting ones that they hardly ever talk about is their pivot (when I invested back in 2022, it was a completely different product for data teams), so it was fun to get into that story as well. Full conversation below, hope you enjoy it!
