If you can wrap your head around this! 42 YEARS AGO today, Prince and Morris Day put together The Time's self-titled debut album that is unrivaled in the purple world. While the album represents mostly work from P and MD, also making appearances were Dr. Fink (keys on The Stick and Get It), Lisa Coleman (vocals on Cool and The Stick), and Sue Ann Carwell (vocals Get It Up and Cool). After Hi-School was the only track that did not have any involvement from Prince. This album made good on Prince's offer to Morris Day to put together a band for him when Morris gave him the song Partyup from his Dirty Mind album where he offered Morris either $10,000 or a band for the song. Morris chose wisely. This was definitely a banger. Name that favorite track!

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 44 Years Ago Today, Morris Day and the Time released their self titled album, which was the beginning of a dynasty that started with a song. Partyup was a raucous track written by Morris Day that Prince loved so much that he offered Morris either $10,000 or to put together a band for him. Morris chose wisely and the result was The Time. While the band was technically the creation of @prince and Morris Day, the band would prove to be his biggest musical rivals and ground zero for multiple musical legends including Morris Day, Jesse Johnson, @JamAndLewis, Jellybean Johnson, and Monte Moir. Jerome Benton would soon follow to round out the band. While @prince and Morris Day were the primary musicians on the album, Terry Lewis did perform some vocals and bass on The Stick. The album also featured Dr. Fink (Get It Up, The Stick), Lisa Coleman (Cool, The Stick), and Sue Ann Carwell on Get It Up, Cool and the voice of various girlfriends. Name That Track! NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 23 Years Ago Today, Prince released The Rainbow Children. It sits in the top 5 albums of his discography for me and one of the most immersive and inventive albums of the 2000's. While some were offput by the "God-voice" narration and religious overtones, the infusion of jazz and immaculate production keep this in regular rotation. Have you heard this album in headphones?! When it was initially released via the NPG Music Club, it was distributed as one single track to avoid, but it was also previewed during a Celebration at Paisley Park. While it didn't do well on the charts or radio, many fans consider this album to be one of his best albums. And I include myself in that mix. What's YOUR favorite track? For me, I have to settle on The Everlasting Now, but that's a hard choice. While the prior two NPG albums had Prince in the background, this one has him front and center (also on the cover), but it's very much an NPG album with Kirky J, Mike Scott, Rhonda Smith, Morris Hayes, the Hornheadz, and other various guests including Marva King, Kay Dyson, and Doug E. NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! Today is the 30 Year Anniversary of the official release of @Prince's The Black Album released on this day in 1994. It was originally supposed to be released in December of 1987 before it was pulled due to Prince having a "dark night of the soul" and referring to the album as evil and being under the influence of "Spooky Electric", who he references throughout the Lovesexy album released as an alternative. He was in discussion with Ingrid Chavez about dark, light and spiritual matters on the night that he decided that this album release needed to be stopped. As a result, he pulled the album 1 week before the release date, but it led to some copies getting into the hands of Wrecka Stows around the world and becoming one of the most bootlegged albums from Prince's vault of unreleased music. The album did not have a theme other than a very raw and funk-filled throwdown. The last song to be recorded for the album was When 2 R In Love, which ended up being released on the Lovesexy album that replaced it. Some songs were being recorded for an album called Camille (his female alter ego) being put together for late 1986. However, once the Camille project was abandoned, some of the selections from that album ended up on The Black Album and others were placed on Sign O' The Times. As a side note, the Camille project is now in the hands of White Stripes band leader Jack White who has been given permission to officially release the album, although no dates have been announced. Meanwhile, Warner Brothers eventually offered Prince $1 million to release the Black Album in 1994, and this was the day that it finally got an official release. If you can wrap your head around that it was 30 Years Ago. So name that favorite track! Le Grind Cindy C. The album featured good friends St. Paul Peterson, Jerome Benton, Jellybean Johnson, Susannah Melvoin, and Eric Leeds. And all of which were officially credited on the album even though all songs were written by Prince except for River Run Dry written by Bobby Z and Eric Leeds sharing writing credits on Yes and Susannah's Pajamas. While the album already had an amazing tracklist, other songs considered for this project were You're My Love (given to Kenny Rogers), 100 MPH (given to Mazarati), I Don’t Wanna Stop (given to Ren Woods), and the still unreleased tracks of Feline and Rough. I noticed some inconsistencies in the answers w/ the translation compared to the Japanese and text left out in Japanese+Eng. In the future, I hope there will be a better quality check with these interviews for a talented artist. Regardless, Tsuyoshi's answers are very thoughtful.

DO YOU HAVE THIS? 35 Years Ago Today, Prince released a collection of remixes of the song Scandalous entitled The Scandalous Sex Suite. It was 19 minutes of sexy time broken apart into three tracks; The Crime, The Passion, and The Rapture. And just to round things out, a new track called Sex. While Prince’s father John L Nelson is listed as a co-author, it is unknown whether he actually had anything to do with the writing. What IS known is that the album is primarily Prince, Eric Leeds, and, um, moaning/seductee Kim Basinger. Just looked at my collection and for some reason, this is one I’m missing. I’ll have to fix that…

A local hotel clerk named Lisa Barber won Prince as her date along with 200 free tickets for the movie’s premiere in her hometown via an MTV contest. Prince and the Band also performed a 50 minute set of music that evening including Raspberry Beret, Delirious, Controversy, Mutiny, Do Me Baby, and then closing with Purple Rain. Mazarati was the opening act performing Players Ball, I Guess It’s All Over, and 100 MPH. The band featured Prince, Bobby Z., Brown Mark, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Dr. Fink, Miko Weaver, Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss, Jerome Benton, Wally Safford, and Greg Brooks.

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 29 Years Ago Today, Prince released his 18th full studio album Chaos and Disorder. The 2nd to be released as O(+>. Prince was quoted as saying, "Someone told me that Van Halen did their first record in a week. That’s what we were going for—spontaneity, seeing how fast and hard we could thrash it out. It was done very quickly, and we achieved what we wanted to achieve in that period of time." Although, the songs range over a 3 year period. Funkatopia's co-host Michael Bland appears on 8 of the song tracks along with Sonny T. Additionally, Morris Hayes and Tommy Barbarella appeared on six of those tracks. It also featured the return of Rosie Gaines, who sang background vocals on Chaos And Disorder, I Rock, Therefore I Am, Into The Light, I Will and Dig U Better Dead. NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 41 Years Ago Today, the release of the Time's album Ice Cream Castle was unleashed onto the world. While some the songs appeared in the Purple Rain movie, the soundtrack lacked any of The Time's tracks and Ice Cream Castle remedied that. Revisit Funkatopia's sit down with St. Paul Peterson, Jerry Hubbard, (piped.video/watch?v=GlpHWzwa…) and Mark Cardenas (piped.video/watch?v=rVnJK3tZ…) who were members of The Time during the filming of Purple Rain and also appear in the Ice Cream Castle album cover. They share their stories of having to step into the band and movie roles and the memories from the height of the Minneapolis sound. NAME THAT TRACK (if you can): Ice Cream Castles My Drawers Chili Sauce Jungle Love If The Kid Can’t Make You Come The Bird

No way. Granted the kid was not a fan of it, so lesson learned to not do that again. But as a child of the 70’s, we did this on purpose everyone we went to the playground.

Kinki Kids is great pop. But did Tsuyoshi used to be on a TV show called Kinki Kids also? We haven't heard of that in the states. Found a random clip online.

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 43 Years Ago Today, Prince released his 4th album Controversy in the UK. There were a lot of interesting tidbits regarding this funk masterpiece. Let’s Work was originally named Let’s Rock and was going to be included on the release of The Rebels album (never released). The name changed to avoid it being dated and Work seemed like it would better stand the test of time. Andre Cymone wrote the song Do Me Baby and was finally correctly credited before Prince’s passing. But then UNcredited after his passing. And lastly, the album showcases Bobby Z, Dr. Fink, and Lisa Coleman on the closing track Jack U Off. Which was unusual since he typically preferred to record his albums on his own. So what’s that favorite track?! Controversy Sexuality Do Me, Baby Private Joy Ronnie, Talk To Russia Let’s Work Annie Christian Jack U Off

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 40 Years Ago Today, @SheilaEdrummer and @prince released the magical Romance 1600. It was her sophomore album that followed The Glamorous Life. The album credits Sheila as producer, writer and arranger by Sheila E. (other than A Love Bizarre, which co-credits Prince), 7 of the 8 tracks were produced, written, and arranged by Prince (with input from Sheila E.). And the song Merci For The Speed Of A Mad Clown In Summer was completely written by Sheila E. with no input by Prince. The album is full of bangers (minus that rogue tambourine track in Romance 1600). The album was originally to be called Toy Box and was recorded during days off from the Purple Rain tour. Name that track! Sister Fate Dear Michaelangelo A Love Bizarre Toy Box Yellow Romance 1600 Merci For The Speed Of A Mad Clown In Summer Bedtime Story

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! ok.. From EACH CD! 28 Years Ago TODAY, Prince released his 19th studio album Emancipation. It was a 3 CD set that ultimately celebrated his freedom from Warner Brothers. Each CD contained 12 tracks and totaled exactly 60 minutes in length each. Prince announced that Dallas Austin would co-produce his next album and, "It’s called Emancipation: 52 songs, 80 dollars. Save your money!". It was not 52 songs. But 36 is nothing to gawk at. And it also doesn’t appear that Dallas was involved either. Michael Bland said that the idea of releasing a triple album came about when Prince saw how double-album sales were counted by SoundScan with Michael Jackson’s album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I where the sale of one 2-CD set was being counted as two copies sold. While Emancipation is mostly Prince, the album also featured contributions from two iterations of The New Power Generation including Michael B., Sonny T., Tommy Barbarella and Mr. Hayes and the 1996 version of the band with Kirk Johnson, Rhonda Smith, Kat Dyson, Mr. Hayes and Eric Leeds. So pick a track from each disk! Disc 1: Jam Of The Year Right Back Here In My Arms Somebody’s Somebody Get Yo Groove On Courtin’ Time Betcha By Golly Wow! We Gets Up White Mansion Damned If Eye Do Eye Can’t Make U Love Me Mr. Happy In This Bed Scream Disc 2: Sex In The Summer One Kiss At A Time Soul Sanctuary Emale Curious Child Dreamin’ About U Joint 2 Joint The Holy River Let’s Have A Baby Saviour The Plan Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife Disc 3: Slave New World The Human Body Face Down La, La, La Means Eye Love U Style Sleep Around Da, Da, Da My Computer One Of Us The Love We Make Emancipation

SHOW YOU LOVE! Happy Birthday to one of the most raw guitarists on the planet, Vernon Reid. As the guitarist for the mighty Living Colour, he helped to kick open the doors to shine a light on a burgeoning underground that we all knew as funk rock. Bands like Bad Brains, Follow for Now, 24/7 Spyz, Fishbone, and many others were finally getting access to a much wider audience thanks in part to that one single riff.

SHOW YOUR LOVE! Happy birthday to one of the funkiest drummers on the planet, Hannah Ford Welton born on this day in 1990. She joined forces with Prince for a project he called 3rd Eye Girl. While some consider 3EG to be his rockiest music in decades, the true magic lived in their live clips randomly posted on Youtube and ofher social medias outlets. Google Third Eye Girl along with “Octopus Heart”, “Menstrual cycle” for a start and be prepared to go down a rabbit hole. Girl power!

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 15 Years Ago Today, Prince released his album 20Ten as a covermount on the Belgium newspapers Het Nieuwsblad & De Gentenaar, the British newspaper The Daily Mirror, and The Daily Record in Scotland. This was the same approach he used for Planet Earth in the UK and Ireland. The German version of Rolling Stone also included it on July 22nd. While Prince did do a 20TEN Tour when the album was dropped, very little of the album was performed at those shows with exception to Act Of God, Laydown and chants from Everybody Loves Me. Additionally, some fans got to hear Future Soul Song, Beginning Endlessly, and Sticky Like Glue at some afterparties. Compassion Beginning Endlessly Future Soul Song Sticky Like Glue Act Of God Lavaux Walk In Sand Sea Of Everything Everybody Loves Me Laydown
