Parents are 10 times more likely to have been sex offenders. Kids in foster care are wildly overrepresented. These are our most vulnerable children who aren’t fitting in, who are having a tough time, and they’re being treated as if though gender is the source of all their troubles. The drug that they are given has been given to pedophiles in the past to chemically castrate them. It’s only been approved to treat prostate cancer in men, endometriosis in women, but we give it to kids off label. We manipulate parents by telling them you can have a dead daughter or an alive son, as if these children will kill themselves if we don’t medically transition them, yet there’s no evidence to support this. Laura Edwards-Leeper, who founded the first gender clinic in Boston in 2007, even wrote in an OP-ED in the Washington Post last year that she’s not aware of any epidemic of suicides. The only evidence we do have has been done with adults. There are no studies with kids. But with adults, the evidence shows that 10 years after sex reassignment surgery, suicide rates peak and are 19.1 times higher than their peers after adjusting for other mental health comorbidities. Working in the mental health field for over 10 years and having a family member with a mental illness I can definitely say our mental health system is broken. We have a “catch and release” style approach to getting people help. We bring them into the hospital and if they aren’t on a involuntary hold they are out within 24 hours. If they are on a involuntary hold they are out within 72 hours. The timeframe needed to get people mentally stable is far more than that. You get the same people going in and out of the hospital over and over again because they aren’t kept long enough. Not only does the medical protocols need to change but the laws need to change to allow a medical incarceration for longer periods of time. Guns are not the root cause. Our broken mental health policies are the root cause.
