Why the Celestia Team Sees a Future With 10,000 Roll-Ups
@CelestiaOrg, a data availability (DA) layer for blockchains, was launched last October to much fanfare. The platform takes a modular approach to blockchains, allowing developers to post data onto it without the need for smart contracts or execution. This makes it extremely useful for scaling roll-ups and other layer two technologies.

The four properties @sreeramkannan elaborates on here have a tradeoff spectrum across different base layers.
Should you build a sovereign rollup on Ethereum or roll your own chain?

EVEN for applications that want total sovereignty in the sovereignty-Interop tradeoff, it is *better* to build on Ethereum than to go for it alone.
This is because you can build a sovereign rollup on Ethereum with the specific ask not to settle on Ethereum - any user of the rollup needs to run a full node or light node to interpret what the rollup state is.
What do you gain by building this as a sovereign rollup rather than a separate chain? You gain four out of five properties needed for a chain: Reorg resistance, censorship resistance (CR), ledger growth, data availability. With only validity insourced. Reorg resistance benefits from a lot of staked capital and lots of light nodes, DA from watching light nodes and CR from a vibrant well monitored ecosystem.
While a sovereign rollup does not benefit from nor contributes to the network effects of the settlement layer, it benefits from the *economies of scale*. It is much easier for the world to monitor one “digital commons” than to be monitoring 100s of chains.

Tradeoff space between sovereign appchains vs sovereign rollups 🧮
This is exactly right. The tradeoff space is around:
- Validator cost vs DA cost (exactly what Shane mentioned)
- Decentralization (complex topic, but most rollups have a single centralized sequencer: there are solutions and more coming in this space)
- Performance
- Ease of deployment
What makes me excited about the rollup space is that it solves two big issues with AppChains: the cost of having a validator set (especially before you have PMF), and everything that comes with deploying an AppChain (coordination, having good validators, writing guides, etc, etc, etc, etc. It is a lot of work and takes a very long time).
Those two issues alone makes innovation harder on the chain level. Right now, the only way for non-VC products to innovate is to use CosmWasm. Which is not inherently bad - CosmWasm is great - but it does limit the choices you can effectively make, and limits native chain innovation (IMO).
