Last night I got to spend a couple hours with @nathanbarry at Capital Camp. We’ve been friends for about 10 years now. I was reminded of the first year we worked together at @ConvertKit. This photo was from the first team retreat that we held. So many people talk about the early growth of ConvertKit like it was magic. And it felt like it a lot of the time. 20% growth month over month was insane. But this photo was taken when our team was sitting around answering support tickets because the software had several bugs and we had an outsized number of frustrated customers. It’s freeing to remember that incredible companies like ConvertKit have gone through phases of intense white water seasons. Just a simple reminder that other people’s success stories are just part of the story. They are generally the result of sticking through hard times and building the resilience to not give up when things get hard.

A few reminders for myself today: It’s ok to feel good in the face of uncertainty. Feeling afraid isn’t more authentic or honest. Fear isn’t you, it’s just how you feel. Fear can teach you some important lessons, if you listen to it. It’s a myth that others aren’t afraid too

Just spent over an hour on a call with @nathanbarry. Even though we stopped working together more than 18 months ago, we still do check-ins once in a while. Having friends in business is so rewarding.

The ability to reframe your disadvantages into advantages is one of the key traits of success. This is the trailer house where I was born. It was on a sand hill in rural Michigan. I was embarrassed of this for a very long time. However, I’ve learned that the things we fear are our biggest disadvantages are actually our greatest assets. Here are the things I’ve learned are advantages when I used to think where I came from was a disadvantage. #1 - Figure things out with only what you have. Resourcefulness is something that I learned at a young age. You have to use what you have to get what you need. Someone who may have had more privileged starting point might not be able to figure things out the way I can when they have limited resources. #2 - Not knowing how things “should” work allows you to be innovative. No one taught me how to be an entrepreneur. I was bitter about this for a long time, but I’ve realized that I do things in unique ways because I’m not stuck doing it the way it’s “supposed” to happen. #3 - Grit. Plain and simple. I know how to do hard things because I had to do hard things. What is something you’ve historically seen as a disadvantage that you could reframe as an advantage?

Who you choose to surround yourself with is important. The right people allow you to progress exponentially. The wrong people regress you the same way.
11
Just a reminder: Not knowing the outcome of something can cause a mental energy drain. It is ok to give yourself some time today to feel that, and no need to feel shame if you need a minute.

This is going to be a game changer for so many people! Congrats @nathanbarry and team!
Today we're announcing a huge change at @ConvertKit: our new Newsletter Plan which is free for up to 10,000 subscribers. ...and it includes access to Creator Network recommendations. ...and you get a basic welcome automation as well. We exist to help creators earn a living. I've spent the last decade removing roadblocks for creators to get started and this is a huge step. We also launched a new website builder with 5 different templates for your newsletter (and 3 more coming soon): ConvertKit can now: • host your website • power your newsletter • automate your subscriber welcome sequence • form partnerships with other creators • sell digital products ...and so much more for free. So how are we paying for this? Two ways: 1) We're bootstrapped and profitable. We're taking our earnings and reinvesting into the next generation of creators. 2) On this plan we reserve one slot in the recommendations form where we promote a relevant creator. This has the win-win of giving beginners access to the world-class tools that the biggest creators use (Huberman, Tim Ferriss, Rachel Rodgers, Sahil Bloom, etc) and driving more growth for all creators on ConvertKit. We built a new Smart Recommendations feature which gives relevant recommendations to each subscriber. More than 10 years into serving creators we're just getting started. Stay tuned for another huge announcement on June 6th.
