Ahead of Canada Day, CIJA CEO @nshack shares the story of his ancestors fleeing violence for the promise of Canada. They persevered through discrimination and worked hard to build this country. Because of everything they sacrificed, we need to double down on their efforts and rebuild the country of their dreams. "This Canada Day, we recommit ourselves to building a stronger Canada because the fight against antisemitism and extremism isn't just a Jewish cause, it's a Canada one and together we will prevail." Happy Canada Day!

We are deeply troubled & disturbed that a Ukrainian veteran of the infamous 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Nazi SS - which actively participated in the genocide of Jews - was celebrated with a standing ovation in the Canadian Parliament.   #Canada's Jewish community stands firmly with #Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression.   But we can't stay silent when crimes committed by Ukrainians during the Holocaust are whitewashed.

The blood of dead babies - Israeli & Palestinian - is on #Hamas. Rhetoric like PM @JustinTrudeau's today enables Hamas to continue to cynically & criminally use the Palestinian civilian population as human shields to advance its genocidal goal. And, while surely not his intent, such assertions also fuel #Antisemitism at home here in #Canada. Unless #Israel destroys Hamas, Hamas will continue to destroy the hopes of Palestinians & Israelis alike to pursue a future of peace. If Canada wants to contribute to the goal of sustainable peace, it will stand firmly with Israel as it toils to remove the murderous Hamas regime from Gaza. Anything less condemns the region to perpetual suffering for all. Prime Minister - there can be no half measures in the struggle to rid the region of Hamas, as painful as that may be & despite Israel’s extensive measures to minimize civilian casualties that go beyond those required by international law. #cdnpoli

Canadian foreign policy shows itself to be hypocritical. We’re disgusted and frankly shocked that only hours after issuing a statement preconditioning a ceasefire on #Hamas releasing the hostages, stopping its use of Palestinians as human shields, laying down its arms, and surrendering its control of #Gaza, #Canada voted YES to a UN General Assembly resolution supporting a ceasefire. In its earlier statement, Canada reaffirmed #Israel's right to exist & defend itself & further condemned Hamas for its heinous acts of #October7, including sexual violence. Then, only hours later, Canada voted YES on a resolution that fails to hold Hamas accountable for its war crimes, fails to even condemn these war crimes, and fails to call for Hamas to lay down its arms and surrender. Did anything change on the ground in the short hours between Canada’s statement and the scheduled UN vote? The answer is NO. Hamas still holds more than 100 Israelis hostage. It is still using Palestinians as human shields. And it is still indiscriminately firing rockets at Israelis. That Foreign Minister @melaniejoly confirmed she consulted with a list of countries about this resolution, and did not include Israel, is telling. Hamas is a listed terrorist entity in Canada and is irrefutably guilty of war crimes – against both Israeli and Palestinian civilians. They cannot be rewarded and left unaccountable. If the civilian Palestinian population needs freedom and relief, it must be freedom and relief from the tyranny of Hamas. Canada’s Jewish community will not forget that, in the face of unprecedented antisemitism, only further emboldened by Hamas’ October 7 massacre, the Canadian government chose to ignore not just Israel’s right to defend itself, but Israel's obligation to defend itself. Canada’s decision to support the resolution will undoubtedly lead to further hate being directed towards Jews here in Canada. The fact that the Government’s vote comes as Jews are celebrating #Chanukah is yet another slap in the face to the community. But, as the story of Chanukah teaches us, we will defeat the darkness – with or without Canada’s support. #cdnpoli

Tonight, we spoke with Toronto Police about the impact of the continued rallies at Avenue & 401 & how our community feels about images of officers handing coffee to “anti-#Israel protestors.”

Our message was clear: The constant disruption of this major route must end now. This isn’t a typical protest site. It’s an overpass in the heart of a residential neighbourhood, one that’s home to many Jewish families. #Toronto cannot become a city where a few dozen “activists” can harm an entire neighbourhood on a near-daily basis.

Hamas is a Canadian-listed terrorist group that has murdered thousands, including many Canadians. Its leaders – based in Qatar and elsewhere - are refusing to accept the latest ceasefire proposal yet again and just yesterday, claimed responsibility for the murder of six Israelis in a Jerusalem terrorist attack. Hamas has vowed to repeat the October 7 massacre "again and again," and refuse to release Israeli hostages. Hamas is the main obstacle to achieving a ceasefire-hostage agreement. Canada must work with allies to hold Hamas’ state sponsors and enablers accountable, and ensure that pressure is directed at Hamas—not Israel—for blocking peace.
Canada condemns Israel’s strikes in Qatar — an intolerable expansion of violence and an affront to Qatar’s sovereignty.   Regardless of their objectives, such attacks pose a grave risk of escalating conflict throughout the region, and directly imperil efforts to advance peace & security, secure the release of all hostages, and achieve a lasting ceasefire — efforts in which Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani plays a highly constructive role.

We're repeating our call - again - for Ms. Elghawaby to be removed from her position. She has shown herself to be incapable of filling the role. Instead of being the bridge builder she ought to be, she has acted more lobbyist than someone looking to close the divide - especially since October 7. While campuses are overrun with antisemitism, she's looked the other way and condoned the law-breaking encampments that have been rife with Jew-hatred. She has defended blatant antisemitic demonstrations in front of a Jewish hospital in Toronto. She has downplayed demonstrations in Ottawa where pro-Hamas slogans were yelled. She has continually defended the indefensible. The Jewish community has had enough. Enough of the divisiveness. Enough with the dog-whistling. Enough is enough. We’re fed up. Canadians are fed up. For months, Jews in 🇨🇦 have been intimidated by anti-Israel radicals. Aggressive demonstrations have taken place outside synagogues and taken over Jewish neighbourhoods, calls of ‘Death to the Jews’ have been chanted in front of Jewish schools — some of which have been shot at while others threatened with bombs — Jewish businesses have been vandalized, and Jewish students have been assaulted on campus. And yet those behind these incidents try to claim they are being vilified as antisemitic. They claim they have nothing against Jews. Well, let this erase any misconceptions: here is yet another proof point that their targeting of the Jewish community is calculated and deliberate. It’s long past time that the hateful people behind this and every other antisemitic act are held accountable. Law enforcement stepping up to put a stop to this is exactly what is needed and what we've been calling for.

We are profoundly hurt by this statement from @PrideToronto. It mentions neither the October 7 attacks – which include execution of young people dancing in a rave, rapes of women, the annihilation of entire families, the killing of babies, the burning alive of innocent families – nor even the name Hamas. It is Hamas’ ideology that is fundamentally opposed to queer rights. In fact, members and allies of 2SLGBTQIA+ have long been persecuted by Hamas, and indeed throughout Palestinian territories not controlled by the terror group. Far from @PrideToronto’s self-proclaimed inclusion beliefs, it is a signal of exclusion towards a community — the Jewish community — which has long been active in 2SLGBTQIA+ circles and at the forefront of the fight for queer rights. The message that Pride Toronto is sending is “Jews don’t matter.” In fact, Pride never makes similar statements about any situation that doesn’t explicitly involve the 2SLGBTQIA+ community — except on this issue. What does that say about an inherent bias against Jews? Canada’s Jewish community, both queer and allies, will continue fighting against all forms of discrimination, including this erasive antisemitism displayed by @PrideToronto.

This is a gross attempt at revisionist history from the Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia. For this she must resign or be fired. You do not combat Islamophobia by minimizing antisemitism. There is video of hundreds of protestors stopped in front of a Jewish hospital, some climbing atop it with Palestinian flag in hand, "Hospital Quiet" sign perfectly in sight, while the mass of them scream "long live the intifada" in the street below. If there was concern about the negative impact, there was plenty of opportunity to quietly and respectfully walk by. They could have changed their route. They could have done any number of things, but the masses chose to loudly and gleefully continue their protest in front of one of the most well-known Jewish institutions in Toronto - one with no connection to the government of #Israel, but with one very specific thing in common - being Jewish. That's #antisemitism no matter which route you take. So what is it exactly that @JustinTrudeau @fordnation @cafreeland @MayorOliviaChow @MelissaLantsman @marcomendicino @theJagmeetSingh and many more all saw that @AmiraElghawaby could not see? Or is it that she does not want to see?  nitter.app/AmiraElghawaby/status/…
Hospitals and medical workers must always be safe to provide important services for patients and their families. Last night's protest route in front of the Mount Sinai hospital had a negative impact and that's troubling and wrong in a society that cherishes freedom of assembly and the right to protest, as well as the right to feel safe. Yet also troubling and wrong is the rush to label protesters as antisemitic and/or terrorist sympathizers. If police determine any action was motivated by hate, then it should be unequivocally condemned because there can be no justification for antisemitism. Not ever. Just as there should be no excuse for the indiscriminate killing of any and all innocent men, women, and children -- which is what demonstrators were actually protesting. Anyone who condemns one but not the other is demonstrating to all of us how Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism operate to devalue the lives of those deemed less than human and unworthy of protections, including those afforded by international humanitarian law. Let's not forget that Canadian Palestinians with family in Gaza have watched in horror as their loved ones, their friends and neighbours, have been bombed, starved, displaced, maimed and killed these past four months - with no end in sight to this madness. Thousands of Canadians from coast to coast to coast of every faith and background are also devastated by the violence and forceful displacement they are witnessing on their screens every day. Many have joined the hundreds of peaceful protests that have taken place across the country. And many report being silenced and/or having faced repercussions for standing up in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Meanwhile, in the past two weeks alone, there have been reports of hate-motivated graffiti found on an Islamic Centre in Cambridge, Islamophobic graffiti left outside the prayer room of a provincial government building, and a Muslim woman assaulted and robbed in Mississauga. Where are the condemnations of these acts? Enough with the double standards. Everyone, everywhere, deserves to live in safety, with dignity, and in freedom.

Due to public safety concerns, the Avenue Road Bridge will be closed. There will be no access to Avenue Road from Highway 401. Police are on scene to enforce this in order to keep demonstrators, counter-demonstrators, and passing traffic safe. Stay tuned for re-opening details.

Why are these same figures silent when it comes to the Jewish women kidnapped by #Hamas terrorists? We have formally reiterated our request to the Minister of Justice, @viraniarif, urging Canada to extradite Hassan Diab to France following his conviction and life sentence for the 1980 bombing of the Rue Copernic synagogue in Paris, which left four dead and many injured. With antisemitism on the rise, allowing a convicted perpetrator of an antisemitic attack to remain in Canada, and even take on a teaching role at @Carleton_U, is unacceptable. We stand firm in calling for justice for the victims of this horrific act and for accountability to prevail. nationalpost.com/opinion/why…

🔴Shameful glorification of violence & terror on the streets of #Toronto. Houthis militants have been violently targeting commercial ships in the Red Sea & have launched drones & missiles targeting Israeli civilians. Today, the same activists calling for an unconditional ceasefire yelled, “Yemen, Yemen, make us proud! Turn another ship around!” &“Long live the intifada!”

CIJA RESPONDS TO CANADA’S ANNOUNCEMENT RECOGNIZING PALESTINIAN STATEHOOD @CIJAinfo CEO @nshack issues the following statement: Recognizing statehood of a territory run by terrorists and where hostages remain in captivity is a reward for the October 7 terror attacks. This move emboldens Hamas, undermines peace efforts, prolongs the suffering of Palestinians under Hamas rule, and fuels global incitement against the Jewish people. Since the government announced its intention to recognize Palestinian statehood in July, anti-Jewish hate crimes have surged here in Canada. Violence against Jewish Canadians has escalated, as seen in recent assaults - including a stabbing attack in Nepean. The government’s policy should be clear-eyed and focussed on releasing the Israeli hostages, securing a ceasefire, and the removal of Hamas from power.

The Canadian Jewish community deplores the passage of a non-binding @NDP motion related to the current conflict in Gaza. The removal of the unilateral recognition of Palestine is an important result of the substantial mobilization of the pro-Israel community. However, we are deeply disappointed that the @liberal_party government has chosen to effectively sub-contract Canadian foreign policy to anti-Israel radicals within the NDP and the @BlocQuebecois. This will result in Canada being perceived as an unreliable partner on the world stage – one that bends to the whims of political fringes. We commend the principled stance shown by the entire @CPC_HQ caucus that voted against the motion, along with Liberal MPs @BenCarrwpg, @AHousefather, @MarcoMendicino, and independent MP @KevinVuongMP. #cdnpoli

We hope this is a strong message for the other encampments on campuses across the country. ‘There’s going to be more to come.' Limon — a restaurant in The Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto — is experiencing significant hostility and threats directed toward their staff and business, including emails, voicemails, targeted false reviews, and threats of vandalism. This call, one suggesting a similar outcome to the November 7 Amsterdam pogrom will happen in Toronto, is just one of many threatening phone calls received since that horrific attack on Israeli soccer fans. A police report has been made. Harassing and threatening owners and staff of a restaurant in Toronto because of the Israel-Hamas war is unacceptable. Hatred towards Jews and Israelis, or members of any faith, ethnic, cultural and/or marginalized group, must be condemned. Everyone must take a stand and summon the moral courage to stand up, speak out, and act against Jew-hatred and antisemitism now. Enough is enough. #Buycott

The largest Muslim advocacy organization in Canada issues a statement blaming Jews for provoking the horrific violence against themselves that took place last night in Amsterdam.

It is clear that this was a premeditated attack by Arabs. There is nothing that provoked or justified it, other than the simple act of Jewish existence.

For the NCCM to share this deplorable take on the events is to fan the flames of violence here in Canada within its own community.
It has been deeply distressing and disturbing to witness the violence that took place in Amsterdam around the Europa League match last night. All intimidation against any community is wrong, no matter where. The violence that ensued against any person is unacceptable, and those who assaulted people should face prison time. Islamophobia and anti-Semitism must always be fought. It is also alarming to see many Canadian leaders and commentators speak out about the issue without acknowledging attacks on Arabs in the streets of Amsterdam. There is significant evidence showing that the violence began early in the day with Maccabi Tel-Aviv fans assaulting Arabs, burning objects and flags in the streets, yelling genocidal chants, and walking through the streets of Amsterdam, dragging Arab taxi drivers out of their vehicles and beating them. This does not in any way justify soccer hooliganism or physical fights between fans. Violence is always unacceptable, and provocation to violence is not a justification. It is simply to say that if Canadian leaders choose to weigh in on this issue, they must condemn the well-documented attacks on Arabs in Amsterdam by Maccabi Tel-Aviv fans over the last 24 hours, as well as the violent chants being espoused by those fans. Our Canadian leaders need to be principled in their dialogue and in their actions -- condemning all forms of hate, whether it's Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism, or antisemitism.

The continued appointment of Hassan Diab as a lecturer at @Carleton_U has raised significant concerns within the Jewish community, particularly given his conviction for the 1980 bombing of the Rue Copernic synagogue in Paris, which resulted in the killing of four people. We have been and continue to actively address these concerns, advocating for accountability and the continued support of France’s extradition request should it be made. We've been in contact with government officials multiple times over the past year and a half to emphasize the importance of upholding justice in cases of antisemitic violence, and in this case in particular. We will remain vigilant and engaged on this issue, and we're committed to ensuring that those responsible for such heinous acts are held accountable, reflecting our collective expectation that justice prevails. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for the values that matter most to our community. Canada's Jewish community expects those found guilty of antisemitic attacks by independent courts of sister democratic countries to be held accountable. 🔴Following the misframing of #Canada's Rally for the Jewish People as a pro-war rally on Monday's @CTVNews, we reached out immediately to network contacts requesting an on-air correction. While we understand senior management has discussed the complaint, we are awaiting official response. We made clear to CTV that labelling it as a rally for war is factually incorrect - far off the mark of both the express purpose of the rally & what occurred at the rally. Not only was the rally in stark contrast to the rallies we’ve seen against #Israel - which often include aggression, violent rhetoric & #Antisemitism - but it was also a peaceful & respectful rally – the opposite of something anyone could describe as pro-war. The description does not meet the high standards we know CTV holds itself to, and its viewers have come to expect. CTV & Bell Media must do the right thing & recognize that words matter.

➡️ We are alarmed by a recent post from Canada’s Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia suggesting the Government of Canada is considering a definition of anti-Palestinian racism. Current definitions classify basic expressions of Jewish identity and support for Israel—such as wearing an Israeli pin, opposing BDS, or disagreeing with the Nakba narrative—as racist. This concept has no basis in human rights law and risks undermining existing Canadian policy and the IHRA definition of antisemitism. We have already engaged with the Government of Canada on an urgent basis on this issue and will keep our community updated as we continue those interventions.

We can only hope those anti-Israel protestors choosing to target Mount Sinai hospital in #Toronto never have to use it, never have a family member or loved one in desperate need of help. The reality is that this Jewish institution wouldn’t hesitate to provide the care someone needed because that’s who we are as a community. EXTREMISTS SILENCE CANADIANS FROM CHEERING ON TEAM CANADA AT DAVIS CUP Following the announcement by Tennis Canada that security threats have forced the matches in Halifax to be played without spectators in the stadium, CIJA CEO @nshack issued this statement: “Cheering for Team Canada is part of what it means to be Canadian. Yet, a small group of extremists have hijacked the Davis Cup, silencing thousands of fans—many of whom travelled from afar—who simply wanted to show pride in their country.” “Tennis Canada’s decision was made to protect Canadians in the face of serious threats. It is unacceptable that hate, harassment, and intimidation have made it unsafe to support our athletes in our own country.” “We are at a crossroads. Extremists have targeted the Toronto International Film Festival, shut down Ottawa’s Capital Pride Parade, forced the closure of MPs’ offices, and even made everyday activities—like visiting bookstores or grocery stores—feel unsafe.” “Our political leaders must decide whether we are a nation governed by peace, order, and good government—or one where fear and intimidation dictate our way of life.” “We call on all elected officials and community leaders: take a stand. Defend our democracy. Uphold Canadian values. Reclaim our public spaces from hate.”

CIJA RESPONDS TO TIFF'S SHAMEFUL DECISION: It is unconscionable that TIFF is allowing a small mob of extremists—who use intimidation and threats of violence—to dictate what films Canadians can see at the festival. The details of what transpired have been out for hours. That a political party leader would tweet this now is entirely irresponsible at best, or purposely misleading at worst. As reported, aid trucks were swarmed by crowds which led to attempts to disperse them with warning shots. No IDF strike was conducted toward the aid convoy. The IDF was there conducting a humanitarian operation to allow the aid convoy to reach the designated distribution point. The only military engagement was towards a small group who endangered soldiers and a tank at an IDF checkpoint. #cdnpoli nitter.app/theJagmeetSingh/…

Media reports yesterday suggested Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau rejected the premise of the case against #Israel brought forward by #SouthAfrica & we expected to see that clear rejection in a formal statement to be issued later by the government.

Unfortunately, minutes before Shabbat began in Ottawa, the statement released by the government lacked any clear & unequivocal condemnation of South Africa’s application.

If #Canada truly stands against terror, against antisemitism, and with international law, then it should have issued a response similar to its allies like the US & Germany. South Africa’s application is a libelous genocide claim against Israel & an abuse of the international legal system to which Canada professes an abiding commitment.

To fail to do this is to give a free pass, yet again - as we saw with the UNGA vote weeks ago, to #Hamas & its supporters, and will result in further inflaming antisemitic hatred against Canadian Jews.

South Africa seeks to let Hamas get away with murder, and Canada must not stand by it. #cdnpoli
