people assume startup founders are unusually risk tolerant. I don’t think this is quite true; rather, founders I know tend to be anxious / neurotic in a way that has forced them to be way better at *de*-risking things than most other people

I’ve low key always wanted to build a research journal — one that was open to all and pursued practical, data-driven insights that made science actionable and real to people. Ambrook Research is realizing that dream.
Today, we're excited to announce the launch of Ambrook Research, where we use data to explore key questions in ag finance & sustainability. This effort is led by @AtticusGraven, who has a strong background in ag economics & previously led energy market investigations at FERC. 1/6

spoke to @jacksondahl for @DialecticPod about ambrook, american industry, aesthetics, and all the things. jackson puts so much care and craft into his work -- so fun to have this conversation with him
I talked to Mackenzie Burnett (@ciaomack) about building financial tools for the independent businesses of America's heartland. Mackenzie is the template of a deeply serious, strategic, and tactical entrepreneur whose engine is not purely ambition, but purpose. Hearing her talk about the big and small of her work is infectious. With @AmbrookAg, Mackenzie is focused on enabling the American Dream and by way of bottom-up resilience. She calls it Grassroots American Dynamism. She combines a rare combination of knowledge across technology, agriculture, policy, and finance that has shaped Ambrook's ability to deliver great financial software for underserved customers, starting with farmers and ranchers. Highlights: - the government's complexity: we treat it like a black box that is either fully incompetent or fully trusted; in fact it is many individuals--mostly non-political appointees--responding to incentives - pragmatic environmentalism: meet people where they are with outcomes rather than ideology - language matters: “resilience” travels further than “sustainability” - "biological factories": why farms are deceptively complex businesses - "everything goes back to accounting": Wading into complexity is freeing: it enables long-term thinking, better decision-making, and lower anxiety - "make the intractable tractable": the CEO’s job is to ingest lots of information and turn messy problems into solvable ones - explore with niche entry points: generalized explanations or histories can be appealing, but specificity can be more meaningful (like understanding Italy by way of citrus) - physical design systems: why aesthetics and spaces matter Transcript and all links below.

this is absolutely true from our experience at ambrook; one of the most used features in our product is our AI receipt capture + matching flow, but we wouldn't have realized this was so important had we not built plain vanilla "attach a receipt to this transaction" first and seen how used that feature was receipt management is important for a lot of businesses, but is unusually important in ag because (1) lenders and government have the right to ask for an audit trail of receipts as evidence for creditworthiness, grants/subsidies, and tax deductions and (2) a lot of farmers otherwise bring a shoebox of receipts to their accountants at the end of the year as their primary form of financial management, so making it easy to see real time expenses is massive

If anyone needs ideas for bootstrapped AI apps, and is passionate about vintage furniture + art, here’s an rfs: - Export my Pinterest board to Facebook marketplace and Craigslist and find me all the similar pieces in my area, and/or - Search Facebook marketplace listings in my area / with custom parameters, run them through Google reverse image search and tell me what the biggest arbs are between listing price and the auction prices listed on Google to find the best deals, and/or - Some layer on my phone camera where I can point it at an item in real life and it runs the reverse image search for me and pops up with a little info card that tells me what it is and how much it’s going for online (this is just short cutting me doing this for every piece on Google reverse image search) I would pay for each of these
