There has been much promise about Web3 native gaming but very little to show for it. I have been thinking about why that is the case for the past few weeks. Part of the challenge for a developer looking to move to Web3 is taking care of the infrastructure? How do you define an in-game economy? What are the tools for managing a userbase that is predominantly on-chain? How about on-ramps or wallets for users? These are the questions @SkyMavisHQ has been finding answers to as they scaled @AxieInfinity into one of the first web3 native games with a million users. A year back - on April 7, we published a thesis on @Ronin_Network. The crux of our argument was fairly simple - that aggregating tooling, gamers and an ecosystem of games would make Ronin a leading contender in games. Here's how the ecosystem's numbers have evolved since

The past six months have cemented @Ronin_Network's position as the best place to launch blockchain games, and the inbound from game developers is at an all-time high. Because of this, scaling Ronin is our current priority, and I wanted to shed some light on our current thinking. Be sure to check out Sky Mavis researcher Phuc Thai’s, latest post for a more in-depth look For now, game developers are launching on the Ronin mainchain. It's a permissioned network with deep liquidity, excellent UI/UX, and users are somewhat protected from scams. Ronin L1 currently supports 1.2M daily users and can scale 10x in its current state, but it needs to evolve to support thousands of games and billions of users. Our long-term goal is to make Ronin mainchain fully permissionless in the future. The first step to achieve this is to enable the creation of permissionless Ronin L2s, which share security and liquidity with the L1. This can be done with a few technologies, but we are leaning heavily towards enshrining Ronin with zkEVM. With that as the premise, let's look at some of the options for game developers. 1. Deploying on Ronin's mainchain. --> This will be great for games that aren't planning on too many on-chain transactions—think web2.5-3 games with a light token economy. Most in-game logic will still happen off-chain, but some tokens will be on-chain. 2. On the permissionless Ronin L2. --> This will be great for game developers who aren't directly partnered with Sky Mavis / Ronin but want to access the Ronin community to find traction. The games that find traction will be elevated to a Ronin Partner and, from there, work closely with our publishing team to benefit fully from the Ronin Effect. 3. Permissioned game-specific L2s. --> Great for partners that outgrow the blockspace on Ronin mainchain and need their own blockspace while sharing liquidity and security with the mainchain. Also a great fit for corporate partners with specific demands that can only be solved on a permissioned network. When @Ronin_Network fully scales, it can support the demands of even the most picky game developer while still having the most active player base in the Web3 world. And remember, technology is not a moat, community is.

After a 10+ year break, I restarted playing and logged nearly 400 hours in this game. And, it's leveling up with Web3. Get ready for the next chapter of MapleStory. I believe it's even more important to pay attention now because of the confluences of gaming trends. (A) Asian gamers are on the rise (6.5% YoY Growth) + (B) RPGs are the highest-spending genre ($25.5B in IAP) + (C) Gamers are moving towards more core games (+42% TAM by 2028) + (D) Web3 emphasizes ubiquity, transparency, and ownership "Wen game?" 2024 CONFIRMED soon™️ The more I played the more my brain got to working on how Web3 could have a novel effect on this game. 🧠 🧐 Sparks of innovative game design with a hint of financialization and incentivization systems burst into my mind. What if my idle characters could be rented out? How about a resource-sharing agreement between me and another player? What would an incentivization and reward system look like for creators and community contributors? Maybe portion block rewards, ve? I can tell you from first-hand experience the amount of effort it took for me to acquire certain resources and assets that are largely left idle for 90% of the time, and you know what we do with idle assets in Web3. 📈🆙 And that's just ONE thing. There are a myriad of other elements that would benefit from the workings of Web3. This makes me so bullish. Before we discuss Web3 though, let's talk about the Web2 game. My journey with MapleStory started nearly two decades ago from 2005 to 2010. After a 13-year hiatus, on September 29th, 2023 I redownloaded the game. For the past three months, I’ve clocked over 380+ in-game hours and countless hours on off-game research — watching videos, reading guides, and discussing on Discords. The result? My main character is a Lv. 260 Shadower 🥷 with 2.5k Legions. IGN: GoForKiet. But I didn't get to this level alone. I relied heavily on the community to help me as the game today is unlike anything I had played back in '05. This community has created guides, modeling tools, simulation calculators, and so much more. 🤝 💪 MapleStory's official creator program is called Bean Brigade and these player-creators are an integral part of the ecosystem. But there are so many other independent creators. A key resource for me is one of these creators' Discord servers. All the community support is voluntary, powered by passion and love for the game. Incredible. Need another reason to be bullish? MapleStory Universe received $100M 💰 in paid-in capital from Nexon -- head corporate buy-in, ✅.
