New short course on Pretraining LLMs! Developed with @UpstageAI and taught by their CEO @hunkims and CSO @echojuliett.
While prompting or fine-tuning existing models works well for many general language tasks, pretraining is valuable for specialized domains or languages with limited representation in current models.
This course walks you through the LLM pretraining pipeline:
1. Data preparation: Learn to source, clean, and prepare training data using HuggingFace.
2. Model architecture: Configure transformer networks, including modifying existing models.
3. Training: Set up and run training using open-source libraries.
4. Evaluation: Benchmark performance using popular evaluation strategies.
As an example use case, you'll also compare the output of a base model with its fine-tuned and further pretrained variants, to see the impact of pretraining on a model's ability to write Python.
The course also explores an innovative technique called depth up-scaling, which Upstage used to train their Solar model family, reducing pretraining compute costs by up to 70%. This technique works by first duplicating layers of a smaller pretrained model to form a larger model, and then further pretraining the result.

#DocumentParse was originally developed to help LLMs read complex documents, but we're deeply inspired to see it serving people in unexpected ways.
Recently, a visually impaired user reached out to us with a heartfelt story. He had scanned an AI programming book using OCR, but the intricate layouts, tables, and code snippets made it nearly impossible to navigate. Frustrated yet hopeful, he turned to #DocumentParse. With this model, he converted the book into HTML, enabling him to read the content in the correct order using a screen reader. This transformation made learning not only possible but also empowering for him.

Struggling to align with human preferences efficiently when training your LLM?
You’re not alone. That’s why we’re excited to present #sDPO(stepwise Direct Preference Optimization) at #COLING2025 — a more efficient way to train LLMs to align with human preferences with even stronger performance.
1️⃣ The essence: sDPO splits the preference dataset into chunks and performs DPO training step by step, using the aligned model from each step as the reference for the next. This progressive approach creates intermediary models with better alignment, leading to improved final model performance compared to conventional DPO.
2️⃣ The results: Applying sDPO on SOLAR 10.7B + SFT further increases the H4 score to 74.3 showing better performance than using DPO, and it outperformed larger models as well.
