As EU energy ministers convene in Luxembourg today, the United States and fellow energy exporters urge the EU to stop the clock on its methane regulation importer requirements before they take effect on January 1, 2027. EU member states, members of
@Europarl_EN, and international energy producers, exporters, and traders have been pressing for a pause for more than a year.
Energy that is being produced and stored right now for delivery in January 2027 largely cannot comply. A stop-the-clock mechanism, grandfathering all contracts signed during the transition, and removing penalties during this period are practical, targeted steps that protect European consumers and industry without abandoning methane emissions reduction goals. Most energy producers, including in the United States, are already reducing methane emissions through significant investments and technological advancements and will continue to do so as quickly as feasible.
America stands ready to continue being a reliable energy partner with the EU. We hope the
@EUCouncil and
@EU_Commission will match that commitment with the bold action this moment demands.
