Players would love to play something like the real thing. Problem is, with MLB exempt from antitrust laws nobody can start a league to compete with MLB. It’s the only major sport that is exempt. That’s why we see leagues like the USFL pop up and compete with the NFL.

In order for the NFL to keep the best players from seeking greener grass in other leagues the NFL must provide for the players. Hard to compete with MLB while they’re exempt from these anti monopoly laws. They know this and is why they have set up a lobbyist office in DC.
