ALT 26-year-old Korean American Victoria Lee was suffering a mental health crisis when her family called 911 asking for medical assistance. Instead, she was shot dead by police. Stop AAPI Hate sends our deepest condolences to Victoria’s loved ones and support their calls for a thorough investigation.

ALT We are outraged by this aggressive response from police. Victoria’s family emphasizes that her death was preventable and that she did not pose a threat. Concerned for Victoria’s safety around police officers, her mother and brother said they specifically requested an ambulance for transportation to a hospital rather than law enforcement. They repeatedly asked the officers not to enter the apartment — but instead, they say the police forcefully kicked in the door and shot Victoria almost immediately. The ambulance reportedly did not arrive until after she was already shot. We are also deeply alarmed about the growing threat of police violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. In the last five months alone, Nyah Mway of Utica, Win Rozario of Queens, and Yong Yang of Los Angeles were killed by police. In two of those cases, the victims were also experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental health is a serious problem among AA/PI communities as well as with Black, Indigenous,

Stop AAPI Hate is heartbroken and devastated by the horrific act of violence at a Texas mall that claimed the lives of at least eight people, including three young children, and wounded seven. We now know that four of the lives lost were Asian people—three members of a Korean family as well as an Indian woman. Most of the eight killed were people of color. We also know that investigators are examining the alleged gunman’s apparent adherence to white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideologies. ALT Our hearts break for all those in Hawai’i impacted by the ongoing wildfires, which have claimed at least 36 lives and displaced thousands of people. The town of Lahaina, Maui has been virtually wiped out, with the blaze taking countless homes, community spaces, businesses, and landmarks like Lahaina’s banyan tree. The harm extends beyond the physical — communities are also dealing with shocking historical, cultural, and economic losses. We send strength and extend our deepest condolences to the victims who are grappling with the devastating loss of life, livelihood, and security. Understanding that economically disadvantaged families and Indigenous communities — who were already facing disproportionate rates of displacement and homelessness — are often hit hardest by such disasters, we also call for the equitable distribution of resources and support as recovery efforts continue.
