We weren’t going to comment on Elon and Ashley St. Clair, but we figured we should. Here are our thoughts on it: There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density enhancement, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning than the correctly performed full squat. In the absence of an injury that prevents its being performed, everyone who lifts weights should learn to squat, correctly.

Deadlifts and barbell squats for a low back in chronic pain sounds like the stupidest idea that has ever appeared in print, I know. It flies in the face of The Conventional Wisdom. The fact is that it works nearly 100% of the time if you do it correctly, and that 90% of the time a stronger back not only stops hurting but also returns you to full unencumbered activity in less than a month.

Hey Eric. Welcome to the cult. For your build I would try something like “frog stance” until you lose some weight. Try bringing your heels closer together. Like a couple inches apart. Then turn your toes out more to 45 degrees. This will help you get your knees and thighs out of the way, and make room for your belly to drop down and be able to set your back flat. You’ll need to take a wider grip to make room for your knees, so there is a trade off. Give it a shot.
Hey y’all, my name is Eric! I’m 47 y/o, 370lbs. I’ve been lifting for 40 days now. Currently running the Starting Strength NLP. Today I deadlifted 245lbs. I’ve been working hard on my form. Making sure to “catch water” with my back instead of rounding. My grip is getting better each workout. Being severely obese has its limitations but I’m not using that as an excuse, gotta get better! 😤💪🏻🔥

One day I got caught and was forced to go talk Robin Williams every week about my feelings as punishment. Mostly we talked about bench press and my love of apples. When I got into some legal trouble the judge gave me a choice: go to jail or become a Starting Strength Coach.
