Disability innovation & creativity for the win!
Percussionist Kyungho Jeon, who was born blind, used to think his dream of playing in an orchestra was impossible. So he helped create a new type of baton that lets him feel, rather than see, a conductor's movements - and now he can play with an ensemble: cnn.it/2YPYZjj

🤬 “I was covered in dirt, ashes, my eyes, my mouth, everything. I was just so thirsty,” Cabrera, who entered a hotel in search of water, said. “And there were hundreds of tourists drinking, having fun and not even caring.”
“I think the biggest worry was when we have bodies in that ocean that still had not been discovered, and for us to see them snorkeling when we still haven't retrieved all our dead — that was hard," one local said. nbcnews.com/news/asian-ameri…

People need to understand “vulnerable populations” aren’t groups at the bottom or far away from you. At the rate the way the state is completely dismantling public health measures & abandoning the most marginalized, pretty soon EVERYONE will become VULNERABLE. That means YOU.
Make no mistake - the CDC decision to change Covid isolation from 5 days to 1 day is an economic & political one. It’s NOT about health and it will kill & disable people. It’s to push people back to work & drive the narrative that Covid is only a risk to the “vulnerable” /1 🧵

I’d rather a few people who don’t need accommodations but receive them “get away scot free” if it means more disabled students who need them get them without undue hardship
I’d say that the number of people who benefit from those accommodations (myself included) far outweigh those who unfairly benefit, and thus imposing restrictions will make many people who need accommodations unable to get them.

I’ve written and talked about this before. Disabled people are oracles
Marginalized people, poor people, disabled people etc. are always the first to warn society about an impending crisis. And they are almost always ignored. Yet, when everything collapses, they are the first to be abandoned. This is an unacceptable moral injustice.

Image description: a young Palestinian girl sitting in a manual wheelchair. She is wearing a headband, pink shirt, and orange pants (or a skirt). Behind her is a fabric backdrop
“What will I do if they invade Rafah?,” Ghazal, a 14-year-old girl w. cerebral palsy who had lost her wheelchair in an attack. Ghazal is just one of 1.5 mil. ppl currently trapped in Rafah, who had already fled multiple attacks. Where are they expected to flee now? And how?

I also truly resent how it only “matters’ if it’s striking young, nondisabled people. ABLEISM runs deep in the framing of illness/contagion in the media & public health
Nearly every American has “underlying health conditions.” This can’t continue to be how #H5N1 is downplayed in US. The virus is mutating. It will evade current vaccines & rapidly become resistant to oseltamivir. We must do more to understand the virus, disease & how to stop it.

FYI Californians on Medicaid (aka Medi-Cal): "On July 1, 2022, the asset limits for Non-MAGI Medi-Cal will be changing... “assets” refers to non-exempt property. The asset limit for one person will increase from $2,000 to $130,000." dhcs.ca.gov/services/medi-ca… #CripTheVote

This happened to me too. And being called anxious is such a gendered thing
Patient on chemotherapy had “anxiety” written in their chart after asking their nurse to mask. This needs to stop. What the hell are we doing?! #MaskUp
