ALT KEYSTONE, S.D. – 126 U.S. Army National Guard officer candidates from 26 states, one U.S. territory, and the Reserves attended their graduation ceremony from Officer Candidate School at Mount Rushmore near Keystone, July 28.
The ceremony represents the end of Officer Candidate School, the first step in officer training and development, and the beginning of their careers as commissioned officers.
“We are always presented with certain challenges and things in our day-to-day lives and in the world and I’m optimistic when I see your accomplishments,” said guest speaker, Col. Brad Carter, the Assistant Adjutant General for the Oklahoma Army National Guard, “and serving as an officer among the ranks is one of the greatest honors that a person can have.”
The OCS program in South Dakota is one of two programs throughout the U.S. that offers all three phases of OCS in one location, allowing National Guard Soldiers to pursue the accelerated eight-week option or a traditional option.

Over 190 @SD_Guard soldiers with the 196th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade were welcomed home today by friends and family in Sioux Falls, S.D., after a 10-month deployment to Djibouti, where the unit served as a part of Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa.
@govkristinoem announced that up to 50 @SD_Guard troops will deploy to Texas to help secure the U.S. and Mexico border in response to Texas' request for assistance. The deployment will last for between 30-60 days. The SDNG is working w/ @TexasGuard to finalize mission details.

On this day, Feb. 7, 2006 the @SD_Guard lost one of its finest Soldiers, SGT Allen Kokesh, who succumbed to his injuries from an IED in Dec. 2005 in Iraq while traveling in a convoy as a member of Battery C, 147th Field Artillery. Rest in peace SGT Kokesh, You are not forgotten.

SD National Guard change of command ceremony
RAPID CITY, S.D. – A change of command ceremony for the South Dakota National Guard is scheduled for Saturday, August 5, at 2 p.m. at the Monument Fine Arts Theater.
Brig. Gen. Mark R. Morrell will be promoted to the rank of major general and will assume command as the SDNG’s 23rd Adjutant General from Maj. Gen. Jeffrey P. Marlette, who served in the position since June 2019.
The public is encouraged to attend the event. Gov. Kristi Noem will be in attendance and preside over the ceremony.
Morrell will command the state’s nearly 4,000 South Dakota Air and Army National Guard men and women with over 1,000 full-time federal and state employees. He will be responsible for strategic planning, leader assignment, recruiting, training, equipping, mobilization, facilities, and public relations.
@SD_Guard has been called to State Active Duty to support Timber Haul and Snow Removal missions on the reservations. The Soldiers and Airmen will be joining @SouthDakotaDOT and @SDPublicSafety in the State’s efforts to address the emergency needs on the reservations.

Wagner, 35, of Mitchell, was tragically killed when his vehicle was struck by a massive IED while in route to an Iraqi police station, May 8, 2006.

The @SD_Guard continued their support today providing drinkable water to people on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Over the last several days, members of Company A, 139th Brigade Support Battalion, have distributed over 8,000 gallons of water to residents in seven communities.
