Tanks… mighty as they seem on the face of… seem a bit… old school. Seems like lite, mobile, gps/drone/sat targeting items are dominating these days. Am I missing something? Are tanks still superior when backed up, like carriers are backed up in a fleet?
Since the Bradley IFV might enter the war in Ukraine I would like to point out that it has BGM-71 TOWs integrated. The TOW-2B (Aero) variant can easily kill a Russian tank without even hitting it directly. (Turret toss included) #Ukraine #USA piped.video/E1VWPOpYbQI

Tim, After a NASA Dr told me that my bad eyesight meant I could never be an astronaut, I started planning how I could someday reach space. After a decade of investing in SpaceHab, EFFORT and numerous others, I learned a path lead by ex-NASA contractors was unlikely. Then I met folks from The Explorers Club, we built the XPRIZE, ZeroG and Space Adventures, finally I secured the first private seat on Soyuz, and then the stock market crashed so I sold that seat to Denis Tito. After rebuilding, I signed up to fly in 2008. Only to be scrubbed for medical causes. After corrective surgery, I was back on track, but then the 2008 market crash. I was broke (again) by the time I flew. 30+ years in the making… but, I made it. You will fly. Your friend, Richard
And just like that, the dreams of my crew are over. I have such mixed emotions about dearMoon’s cancellation. Of course I’m extremely disappointed, having dreamt about this mission since I first heard about it in 2018 and even more for the last 3 years since the selection process started. I slowly allowed myself to envision a trip to the Moon one little bit by little bit. On the other hand, I have guilt about being upset about a gift that was retracted. A part of me doesn’t feel I’m entitled to grieve since I wasn’t entitled to this mission in the first place. But the reality is, I’ll need to allow myself to grieve this loss as it became a big part of my life, my dreams, and my visions. Going to space has never been a thing I’ve actively pursued in general. It’s not a goal of Everyday Astronaut. It was simply a cherry on top. Granted, a HUGE cherry, but I’ll be just fine without this mission. I’m extremely fortunate to have the life and the career I have and this mission’s cancellation changes none of that. In fact, I’ve gained new friends, had new adventures and learned more about myself in the last three years because of dearMoon. Unfortunately, I can’t speak for everyone on the crew who all have different emotions, consequences and realities of this cancellation. For those who this affects the most, my heart goes out to them. The one thing I have a hard time reconciling is the timeline. Had I known this could have ended within a year and a half of it being publicly announced, I would’ve never agreed to it. We had no prior knowledge of this possibility. I voiced my opinions, even before the announcement, that it was improbable for dearMoon to happen in the next few years. I still firmly believe that, within my lifetime, we will see missions like this happen, and while I will never be the first to do such a mission, it brings me great joy to know the future is bright and exciting. And I’m proud to be able to continue to cheer those on who will do these exciting firsts! I’ll still be here to help explain rocket science to anyone who will listen to me babble on about spaceflight. In 2018 I started looking at the Moon and imagining artists going around it, then as the selection process narrowed, I allowed myself to imagine going around it. But unfortunately now every time I look at the Moon, it’s a painful reminder of dreams lost. But I will continue on as I always have, one giddy rocket nerd who’s here to witness history, absorb as much knowledge as I can, and break down what I learn for my fellow everyday person. I love you all, thank you for the ongoing support and encouragement at this time.

I lived in Russia for most of two years training for my space flight. Since them Moscow and St Petersburg had been flourishing… but as soon as you drove outside the biggest cities, it rapidly fell into squalor. Trash on the road sides, open air meat markets with flies, grungy shops with lots of vodka, some cognac and beer. Leaky mass apartment blocks and rotting wooden dachas. Don’t get me wrong, I actually loved the people. Open, loving, sharing, caring… but their government has utterly failed them. The Russian kleptocracy of Putin and his oligarchs have doomed yet another generation. Yet, we cannot bring true democracy to those who don’t demand it for themselves. Most Russians I knew there, felt Putin was better than the communists of old, so were content with his rule.
This is in case anyone thinks that Russia is all about caviar, beautiful women and wealth. Ladies and gentlemen, THIS IS RUZZNIA !! #RussiaIsCollapsing #RussianWarCrimes #RussiaisATerroistState #NAFO #NAFOfellas #NAFOCatsDivision

Whatever your feelings on the Luna 25 crash, I think we can at least admit that Russia still holds the record for coolest looking moon probe. Lunokhod 2 looks like it was fully capable of fighting Doctor Who.

If there is one thing I have learned from being an astronauts son, being an astronaut, serving on the NASA advisory council, having plenty of friends in governments all the way to the top, knowing plenty of military brass and highly placed folks across related fields… it’s that secrets are very hard to keep. If there was real evidence, we would know. If you have real evidence, show it. Not interested in what “whistle blowers” have to say.

When I get a backlash for talking politics from gamers who’ve played my games, and somehow are shocked I have political opinions… I wonder if they really understood the games. They were always political (starting with Ultima IV). Virtues, anti-racism, anti blind faith, anti-corruption of power, facing down a world with unfair tactics, recognizing paths other than your own as worthy. Somehow they missed the Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Sacrifice, Honor, Spirituality and Humility! Live by the Virtues! Needed now more than in my younger days. Lord British

When I lived in Russia for much of two years in 2007-2008, it was very clear that the vast resources of Russia would be unlocked if only they built nationwide infrastructure, as the USA did after WW2. When I asked my Russian friends why they did not do that, they stated that Russia saw the lack of East / West connectivity to be a good defensive strategy, so no thanks.
Probably one of the greatest ironies of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine is that Putin was so hellbent to have Nordstream2 finished that he completely disregarded any long-term strategy for Asia. Almost all pipelines go to the West and it is impossible for this to change in this decade. Putin, the "master strategist", completely relied on that he will win in Ukraine and that the entire world will go along with it. It also proves that revanchist fascism as Russkyi Mir is that it never does any good to the people. Russia could have thrived if it had relinquished all imperial ambition. Industry would thrive, the very life could thrive, but all what they have is now a broken society with stupid WW2 fetishism where Soliviki and Ozero-Oligarchs sit in their palaces from Gelendzhik to Sotchi. And if this is the worst what can happen to Russia then you haven't see everything. With each day this war goes on the more Russia will lose. Like I said, the irony... #Russia #Ukraine #Energy

I love all the folks complaining about Neil’s comment. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I know plenty of smart people who hope that aliens are among us. Unfortunately, their evidence, while mysterious and worthy of curiosity, is not remotely compelling to jump to such a conclusion.
Sometimes I wonder whether alien space vessels are inherently fuzzy & out-of-focus (that would be terrifying). And whether they love the @USNavy (that would be charming). If so, it would explain a lot.

Here is an almost never told story… in the L shaped strip mall that had Computerland at one end, there was a small print shop near the other end. I had the original cover sheet and manuals printed there, which my mom and I stapled together at home at the kitchen table. When they were being printed, it was just me, and the young woman on the other side of the counter running the huge printing press. The printing press had ink, that was spread evenly before being transferred to the final roller with the image on it, by running over a series of rollers rolling in opposite directions… perhaps 6 such rollers. While the woman was operating the press, making the Akalabeth manuals, her hair got caught in the rapidly spinning series of inked rollers! In a matter of a split second, it sucked in her long hair, and slammed her cheek into the machine. Fortunately, she also, instinctively, reached around and shut off the machine. But, she was now pinned against the machine, deeply entangled and bleeding significantly. I jumped over the counter and began disassembling the machine in haste. By the time we got her “extracted”, we where both covered in ink and blood. So was the print shop. But we did get her out, a few stitches were needed to patch her up. So… if you have an original Akalabeth… check it for blood and hair! ;) Richard

I feel similarly. No video game has yet reached the power of the early game masters loosely using the original 3 saddle stitched books, to be interactive story tellers, not dice rollers. As computer games improved, many pen and paper experiences diminished. Too many rules, too little story telling action. Some new table top games have regained my interest, and digital worlds have yet to exceed my early experiences with a master storyteller. Perhaps even some of my own campaigns I would like to think. But, neither physical nor digital are lost… they can both still rise to new heights! We are after all, a pretty clever species!

Well… let me bow your mind a bit more… some have surely seen this… Ultima III was Origin’s first game. My mother was our art director, and did a massively great job with the maps and manuals. I wanted a cover inspired by Fantasia, with 4 players in a demons hands in a fire pit. My mother made a copy…. While it’s very nice… I made a very tough call… to tell my mother I wanted Denis to redo the image. Here are both their works:

It wasn’t “always”… Origin, in the early days of Ultima, Wing Commander, and more in the 1980’s really was “Camelot”. Everyone supported each other’s drive to make better and better games, and deliver the tag line “We create worlds!” Then, the bureaucrats drove it all into the ground.

I created the virtues from scratch, but through a long process of research, during which I read innumerable religious texts, philosophy tomes, books on ethics, and much more. Eventually realizing no existing source would work for me, so I spent months organizing and relating virtues and vices into what became the core 3 principles of Truth, Love and Courage, from which I could rationalize not just the 8 virtues of Ultima, but most every other motivating virtue or vice. I am proud of it. While it is “fiction”… it is also well imagined.

How does this square with reports that both sides seem to be suffering similar scales of casualties. Why is Putin sending ill prepared conscripts, vs putting conscripts elsewhere and move the trained 2/3 of his troops to the front, and conscripts elsewhere?

The term MMO was coined by my team trying to differentiate UO from MUD’s and other dial up service multiplayer games. Foremost, was the concept of “massive”, meaning truly 1000’s or more could simultaneously connect and interact with each other live in the game world. UO had significantly more success that EA projected, so we still had to “shard” the world. Another term we made up, out of Ultima fiction history (breaking up Mondain’s gem of immortality fractured reality into each gem shard. While UO was mostly a single flat world, we did not intend to imply that the massive number of players in an MMO could not also have smaller instanced spaces, rather / mostly that all players in a shard CAN see and interact with each other.

This is an example of how marketing departments industry wide, were often filled with non-gamers, who rarely knew the lore, often didn’t even know genres well. Yet, often wielded power over how a product would be showcased.
Y'know, I never thought about this, but why the SNES cover of U7 has a key/keychain with a skull? The black gate was never a proper gate with key and lock, soooo... I dont remember keys and keyring being that relevant in the game. @RichardGarriott @ultimadragons

Strange how some manage to still not get this… all by willful ignorance.

Correct. I just returned from the Challenger Deep. If I may be a bit “braggadocious”, I’m now the first person to travel pole to pole & space to deep!

How do these folks not recognize they are in a cult? I’d be embarrassed to “worship” anything this desperately. But, especially something so divisive and angry and mean spirited.

I wrote Ultima II directly in assembly language. No real editing environment. I taught myself assembly, as I wrote it. While I am still not a touch typist, the 3 letter assembly acronyms, I had down pat. LDA (Load Accumulator), ASL (Arithmetic Shift Left) etc.

Congratulations Avatar! The path of Virtue will guide you, as you guide us to follow! Lord British
This game came out when I was 9 years old and I wasn’t smart/able enough to finish it. Well today 39 years or regret-all at once- vanished forever. Alhamdulilah

@ExplorersClub Team, Thanks for all your support and hard work on the rescue operations for our friends aboard Titan. I believe we have importantly improved the odds of a positive outcome though our advice, volunteering of services and equipment, and even the political pressure we continue to bring to bear. All has been needed. All continues to be needed. Magellan is en route (should have been accepted sooner), we are still trying to get side scan sonar (should have been accepted sooner), and still working on ships to transport equipment and other details. We continue to come together for our friends, their families and the ideals of The Explorers Club, and the cause of safe scientific exploration of extreme environments. There is good cause for hope, and we are making it more hopeful. I thank you! Keep searching! Richard Garriott de Cayeux President, The Explorers Club

While I am no fan of Mike Pence, it’s time for the 25th amendment! Mike Pence should now become president! Congressional members sheltered and texted loved ones their “final” I love you. Trump must be removed now! It’s time to do everything we can to get rid of him NOW!

Sorry our views appear not to align. Yes, I both read the whole piece, and listened to much of what he said. He is a dangerous criminal, who will become more and more like the dictators he admires, if we allow it. My Twitter is me, not just game, not just space, politics too.
Replying to @RichardGarriott
I used to have a lot of respect for you, Richard, but all of these political tweets have really put me off. Did you even listen to what the man said? Probably not… sad. Never said he would “rule like a dictator”. Ridiculous

I bought lots of “occult”books as research on how to make magic “feel believable”. I was universally disappointed, in how obviously nonsense it all was. I then set out to write magic manuals, starting with Ultima III that read much better! Logical use of reagents and mantras FTW!
LOL I had to donate stacks of my occult books because my mom said I was inviting evil into the house :(

I, Lord British, will take this up with the creators @Underworld_Asc. We shall use Mondain’s time machine, or Minax’s time gates, or @ErnestCline’s car to go back to the 1990’s & rectify this for thee Lord @notch. Or, perhaps you should try the new Underworld Ascendant on Steam!
The plot to Ultima Underworld 2: Labyrinth of Worlds does not hold up to scrutiny! There, I said it.
