Thank you @DavidChiu . SF should offer shelter to those who will accept it, but we can’t accept permanent encampment of public spaces.
S.F. to appeal 'untenable' court ruling on homeless response | Politics | sfexaminer.comsfexaminer.com/news/politics…
JUST IN: The Board of Supervisors just voted 10-1 to adopt a new version of my "fourplex” ordinance to allow up to four units of housing on every residentially zoned lot in the City and up to six units on corner lots — all while preserving SB 9 in San Francisco. 🧵
The notion that we are going to solve our street conditions by building permanent housing for every unhoused person who may pass through San Francisco is a noble ambition and it’s not going to work. sfstandard.com/public-health…
Far too often San Francisco’s criminal justice system utterly fails to hold repeat offenders accountable for their crimes. Releasing someone with 120 misdemeanor and 8 felony charges on an ankle monitor is nuts - especially if you never even put it on. sfchronicle.com/crime/articl… (1)
Magistrate Judge Ryu apparently believes the Constitution prohibits the involuntary removal of a single encampment unless and until SF has more shelter beds than homeless people. That’s absurd, and the City must appeal. sfchronicle.com/sf/article/S… via @sfchronicle
Tomorrow, the Planning Commission will consider my proposal to allow fourplexes in neighborhoods throughout San Francisco. This would be a historic shift from the downzoning that occurred in the 1970s. We should allow multi-family housing across San Francisco. (1)
The way much of SF is zoned makes it easier to flip existing housing into monster homes than to build small apartment buildings for working people. Today I am announcing legislation to allow fourplexes on corner lots & near major transit stations & curb monster home conversions.
Thank you to the Planning Commission for unanimously approving my fourplex legislation to allow multi-unit buildings in historically single-family zoning districts. It’s time to change our zoning to allow more housing for more families across San Francisco. (1)
I met the future first spouse today! It was an honor showing @Chas10Buttigieg some of my favorite places in the Castro with some of my favorite people in the neighborhood. Thanks Chasten and Team @PeteButtigieg!
Today I introduced legislation to allow fourplexes in residential zoning districts across San Francisco. We're going to have to make much bigger moves than this to address our housing shortage, but this is a meaningful step in the right direction. sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/h…
If it feels like there is no traffic enforcement in San Francisco, it’s because there pretty much isn’t.
Traffic citations plummeted 97% between 2014 and 2022, with SFPD issuing only 10 citations per day last year. 🧵
If it seems like there isn’t any traffic enforcement in San Francisco, that’s because there largely isn’t. With 39 lives lost to traffic crashes last year, we simply cannot continue to shortchange street safety. 🧵
Free Muni is a great slogan & bad policy for San Francisco right now. San Franciscans deserve excellent public transit that's safe, reliable & frequent. That takes money. Using scarce public dollars to make poor service free for 3 months is the wrong move. sfexaminer.com/news/transit-…
Another reason to cancel your ACLU membership.
Fact check: Speed safety cameras enabled by AB 645 will reduce speeding and save lives.

Amazing turnout this morning outside the 9th Circuit from San Franciscans who love our city and are unwilling to lose our public spaces to encampments and open drug scenes. Deep thanks to all who turned out!
In recent years, San Francisco has earned a reputation as a destination for people who use the most toxic drugs to come, and eventually die.
I support this effort to make San Francisco the city where people are able to get sober and build a better life.
sfchronicle.com/sf/article/b…
Last night, I voted to support Mayor Breed’s Declaration of a State of Emergency for Drug Overdoses in the Tenderloin.

(1/2) SF is one step closer to opening our first (and likely first in the nation) drug sobering center! At today’s GAO meeting, we approved the lease for a 20-bed drug sobering center which will open this fall in SoMa. In 2019, the Methamphetamine Task Force, which I co-chaired
San Franciscans are proud of our city but increasingly frustrated with our local govt, especially with SF's current challenges. Today, I'm introducing a Charter Amendment package of common sense reforms that would improve how City Hall governs and delivers for the people of SF.🧵
I’m truly glad that SF has made vaccines available to type 1 diabetics like me, people living with HIV and others with underlying health conditions. The extraordinary operation at Moscone was so impressive!
New from @hknightsf: “A new analysis of every traffic citation issued by SF police over the past 4½ years shows enforcement of the rules of the road has plummeted.”
At the next BOS mtg I’ll be calling for a hearing on the state of SF traffic enforcement.

Earlier this afternoon a reporter was robbed at gunpoint at Twin Peaks Blvd & Burnett Ave while interviewing a resident about car break-ins in the area. @SFPD officers are working to find those responsible and recover the camera. This incident is ridiculous & unacceptable... 1/2
Tired of this?
Yesterday @sfcta endorsed AB 361 by @AsmChrisWard to enable automated camera enforcement for double-parking in bike lanes. Let's get this done #CALeg!
“The most effective pressure San Francisco can apply on red states is showing that San Francisco can be effectively governed,” Mandelman said.

Street Crisis Response Teams are in the Castro! Neighbors, businesses, and visitors can now call 911 to request the SCRT’s help for an individual experiencing a mental health crisis on the street. Thank you to everyone who worked with my office to bring the SCRT to District 8.
This is a big deal. Adding additional locked mental health beds is one of the most important things we can do to address the needs of people with untreated severe mental illness. Conservatorship laws won't work unless you have appropriate placements.
sfchronicle.com/sf/article/m…
Ready to extend last call to 4am?! San Francisco would have the ability to do that under SB 930 from @Scott_Wiener@MattHaneySF. Thank you Sen Wiener for continuing to champion this cause. SF nightlife is roaring back and now is the time to make this happen!
Great info coming out of today's Board hearing on SF's response to the omicron surge. We have the lowest death rate and highest vaccination rates of any major city - and we are WAY more boosted than the rest of the state and country! Way to go San Francisco and @SF_DPH!
The rise of illegal sideshows are endangering our neighborhoods and SFPD needs every tool available to make our streets safer.
Yesterday I requested the City to authorize the use of drones to deter sideshows. Thank you @BrookeJenkinsSF for joining me in this effort.
Today I joined Mayor @LondonBreed in the Castro to announce a permanent version of the Shared Spaces program. Shared Spaces has been a rare bright spot during the pandemic, providing a chance for hundreds of small businesses to keep their doors open 1/3
Today I joined my colleagues to allocate additional transportation funds to the Slow Streets program. Slow Streets have been a popular addition in many neighborhoods by allowing more space to go for a walk or get to essential services and parks in the time of social distancing.
Now that the recall has qualified for the ballot, I will be moving forward with a supplemental to have the City cover the full cost of the election. SFUSD is facing severe budget shortfalls and the school district spending millions on this recall will only harm our students.
SFPD staffing levels are reaching a crisis level. Officers are spending more time responding to 911 calls, meaning less time for foot patrols and community engagement. We need to think critically about how we’re going to fully staff SFPD (2/2)
sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti…
In 2016, San Francisco prohibited City-funded travel to states with anti-LGBT laws and ended contracting with companies HQ'd in those states.
Fast forward to today: The banned state policy now prohibits the City from doing business with 30 states. 🧵
🚨 We’ve received reports of assaults & robberies in Noe Valley & across SF targeting individuals w/ smartphones. We're in contact w/ @SFPD & the Department's Robbery Detail is actively pursuing the case.
Please be vigilant & report photo/video evidence to SFPD (more ⬇️)
Yesterday a majority of the BoS voted to overturn an MTA decision that would have made it easier for city staff to address overnight lodging in large RVs throughout the City. I was 1 of 3 members of the Board to vote no — I explain my reasoning below.

Tagging is out of control in San Francisco. Vacant storefronts and proliferating graffiti are impacting neighborhoods and commercial corridors across the City. During the pandemic the City waived graffiti abatement fines and many abatement notices have simply gone ignored.
but not entirely unexpected in San Francisco in 2021. We need to adequately resource public safety agencies, adopt better strategies to stop repeat offenders & make clear that San Francisco is not a place that you can commit crimes & put people's lives at risk with impunity. 2/2
Yesterday at a hearing on taxpayer funded communications regarding public safety, I expressed my support for police reform in San Francisco, and my view that City leaders should provide @SFPD the resources necessary to carry out those reforms while protecting public safety. (1/8)
Two years later and we continue to mourn Courtney. His death was a tragedy for his family, friends, and an entire community that knew and loved him. Let’s build the better transportation system and better San Francisco that he advocated for so passionately.
Outstanding police work by plainclothes officers led to the arrest of 2 suspects wanted for several armed robberies, kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon. Officers seized numerous firearms, including the one pictured, and the vehicle used in the crimes. Well done!
I believe San Francisco can and must end unsheltered homelessness. Doing so will require more efficient delivery of services, and an honest conversation about why so many people end up unhoused in our city. sfexaminer.com/news/what-sho…
Today I co-sponsored new legislation from @LondonBreed to make a safe kid-friendly #CarFreeJFK a permanent feature of GG Park. While we still have more work to ensure accessibility for visitors to our park and museums, this plan sets us on the right path
sfchronicle.com/sf/article/M…
This morning I saw a poll showing 82% of San Franciscans feel that traffic congestion has worsened. At today's BOS meeting, I asked Mayor London Breed: How do you envision closing the gaps in our transit system & moving from our congested present toward a transit-first future?
This decision is a big deal and good news for cities and counties in CA and throughout the 9th Circuit’s jurisdiction. Street homelessness is a complicated policy challenge, with a host of contributing factors.
National Fentanyl Awareness & Prevention Day.
Our city leaders must acknowledge the tragedy unfolding in San Francisco and elevate the growing voices that demand we put an end to our open air drug markets.
Treatment and accountability NOW.
Today, I introduced legislation to begin to loosen the density controls that restrict housing production in many of our city’s neighborhoods & most of its land area by allowing development of up to four units on corner lots in all RH districts. sfchronicle.com/local/articl… 1/3
Today the Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance approving @SFPD's policy governing the funding, acquisition, and use of certain technology. This includes seven robots designed to neutralize/dispose of bombs, and provide video reconnaissance for operators. 1/5
Retail theft has become a pervasive problem in San Francisco, hurting businesses and the residents who rely on them. Thank you to District Attorney @BrookeJenkinsSF and our own District 8 Police Liaison for your efforts to stop the madness.

Street conditions in the Castro (and too many other neighborhoods in San Francisco) are unacceptable, and have been for the entire time Mayor Breed and I have been in office. (1/5) sfchronicle.com/sf/article/S…
I am disappointed that the BOS failed to meet the 8-vote threshold required to approve a $3.25m appropriation for the City to cover the cost of the school board recall, which the Mayor included at my request to avoid adding to SFUSD's fiscal woes. (1) sfchronicle.com/sf/article/S…
Racism is America’s original sin, but the racial profiling of a child is uniquely horrible and horrifying. I’m so inspired by Ja’Mari Oliver and the amazing educators, students, and parents at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy who came together to fight back and demand change.
Thank you @HillaryRonen for bringing this item back for a vote at today's meeting and to my colleagues for passing it 10-1. This means $3.25m will stay with SFUSD and support our students.
On Tuesday I will be proposing legislation to allow up to four units on corner lots and on lots within a half-mile of train stations. My legislation will also make it harder to build mega-mansion single family homes 1/2 sfchronicle.com/bayarea/heat…
Mayor @LondonBreed just signed our fourplex legislation to increase housing density in every residentially zoned lot in San Francisco.
This is an incremental but important step in the right direction to meet our housing needs, & it shows we can get things done at City Hall. 1/2
Thanks @davidchiu & @sfcityattorney legal eagles for winning this important clarification from the 9th Circuit. Now, no more excuses. It’s long past time for the City to stand up the shelter we need to clear encampments & give real/immediate exits for those willing to take them!
Today San Francisco made an incremental but important move to help save our planet when the Board of Supervisors passed my legislation eliminating natural gas and requiring all-electric construction for new buildings, with limited exceptions for restaurants and technical reasons.
To meet our climate action goals, the City must expedite permitting for at-home solar. On Tues I introduced a resolution in support of @Scott_Wiener's SB 379 to require cities to use automated permitting for small solar installations, allowing same-day approval for solar permits.
Today I voted against a resolution urging the Mayor and DPH to keep the Tenderloin Center open beyond its planned closure next month. Reducing and reversing overdoses is unquestionably a top priority for San Francisco, and we’ve learned some important lessons from the Center.🧵
More San Franciscans died from overdose in 2020 than from COVID-19. On International Overdose Awareness Day #IOAD21 we remember those we've lost and commit to #EndOverdose.
In New York City, where residents have a right to shelter, 96.2% of people experiencing homelessness have some form of shelter or transitional housing. Here in San Francisco, only 57% of people experiencing homelessness have some form of shelter. 🧵
NEW EPISODE of #FixingOurCity. S.F. is working on its first-ever plan to offer shelter to all who need it. The option to live indoors affords dignity and protection, but shelter isn't a panacea. Some prefer prioritizing long-term interventions. LISTEN: trib.al/IXdvLOw
“One out of every three people on pretrial electronic monitoring in San Francisco removes their ankle monitor or commits other crimes,” said Mandelman. “If one out of every three cells in our jail had broken locks, we would do something about it.”

OPINION: We — members of the @SFParents — have concluded that Commissioners Alison Collins and Gabriela López should no longer serve on the Board of Education. ow.ly/eBQ750GIOP1
The closure of state hospitals since the 1950s have led to severe mental health system bottlenecks, & w/ a shortage of 6k+ beds across the state & 36k+ unhoused Californians suffering from mental illness, addiction, or both, it’s clear that the status quo isn’t working. 🧵
It is on us to support her in doing that and push back on a misguided libertarian ideology that people have a right to slowly die on our sidewalks. To the extent we make progress, it will be thanks to increasingly mobilized residents and merchants who demand it. (5/5)
Two arrests have been made in the carjacking/solo vehicle collision that occurred at 19th/Sanchez in the Mission District. Investigators arrested 36 yo. Kevin Nelson of SF and 31 yo. Jennifer Bonham of SF and booked them on numerous charges. ➡️ tinyurl.com/56hah9ec
Allowing people to live in unsafe, unregulated encampments without intervention is inhumane, and San Francisco needs a comprehensive plan to get everyone indoors. (3)
Thank you @hknightsf for continuing to shine a light on our city’s failures. Mary Botts didn’t have to die. She was the victim of a broken system that we still haven’t figured out how to fix. We can and must do better. sfchronicle.com/bayarea/heat…
The bottom line is, as the Board just heard at a recent hearing called by @SupStefani, SFPD is over 500 officers short, and San Francisco residents are feeling the impacts of this insufficient staffing. That should be the priority as we head into our annual budget process. (8/8)
Two sideshows this past weekend — one at a major intersection in the Castro. This is why I requested the City to develop a policy on using drones during sideshows & supported the recently passed Prop E. Looking forward to Prop E’s implementation. sfist.com/2024/03/18/early-s…
Thank you Carl Nassib for breaking through the rainbow ceiling and becoming the first active NFL player to come out! Your visibility, and your generous $100k donation to @TrevorProject, will help save the lives of queer youth. ebar.com/index.php?id=306202
The most effective strategy for San Francisco to push back on red states is good governance. We have incredible needs for our residents in the City, and the repeal of the 12X “Banned State” policy removes complex barriers to serving our most vulnerable - locally and nationwide.
(1) Yesterday, 3 subjects entered Wagreen's, near Market/Church. Employees recognized these subjects as "frequent shoplifters."When the subjects began trying to break open the locked items, an employee called 911. @SFPD
Congrats @BrookeJenkinsSF! Look forward to working w/ you to get San Francisco back on track to safer streets, advance shared criminal justice reform goals, and chart a more sensible and sustainable approach for those who have repeatedly cycled through our broken justice system.
JUST IN:
San Francisco's new District Attorney is Brooke Jenkins, the prosecutor who left Chesa Boudin’s office and joined the recall. sfchronicle.com/sf/article/S…
My statement on the violent attack in the Castro last night. Everyone, resident or tourist, should feel safe in San Francisco. This violence is unacceptable and cannot continue.
The decision to find Kyle Rittenhouse not guilty on all charges is a stunning failure to bring justice on behalf of those he murdered - Anthony Huber, and Joseph Rosenbaum. Verdicts like this threaten our ability to maintain a civil society and mitigate rampant gun violence.
August is officially Transgender History Month in San Francisco! I was proud to join @LondonBreed and trans community leaders to declare the country's first Transgender History Month. Thanks @transdistrictsf and @TransCitySF for helping to make this historic moment possible.
SF is a culinary, cultural and entertainment capital. Our legislation takes a page from European cities like Amsterdam that have fostered a distinctly cannabis friendly small business model, cannabis cafes.
Excited to partner with @MattHaneySF to bring this concept to SF.
Today I joined @LondonBreed, along with Supervisors @Ahsha_Safai, @SupStefani and @MattHaneySF in introducing an ordinance to create a permanent version of the Shared Spaces program, which has been a rare bright spot during this pandemic. Full statement attached.
San Francisco has seen a decade-long drop in traffic citations, a trend that police have vowed to reverse. A Chronicle analysis shows the drop in detail.

This is exciting news! SF has one of the thinnest urban tree canopies in the nation, partly because we don’t have a dedicated source of funding to expand our urban forest. Thanks to a $12 mill grant through the IRA, we can now plant thousands of street trees across the city!
I share community concerns about draft maps produced by @RedistrictSF, including separating the LGBTQ+ community in the TL & SOMA & removing @SFGMC from @Castrolgbtq; however, removing 3 duly appointed commissioners days before the process concludes is not a reasonable solution.
While the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club has its frustrations with the Redistricting Task Force in ensuring the voices of our LGBTQ community are being heard and conveyed, we do not support the last-minute removal of task force members by the SF Elections Commission.
