On the cover of @ScienceAdvances, we report an elastomer with over 50% strain-induced crystallization, much higher than the 20% level of state-of-the-art rubbers.
science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…
* The new elastomer is achieved by deswelling a tetra-arm “ideal” polymer network gel. Such network architecture minimizes entanglement and facilitates chain alignment and strain-induced crystallization.
* The scaling for the stretchability of the new elastomer is N^2/3, instead of N^1/2 for common elastomers.
* Due to the ultrahigh strain -induced crystallization, the new elastomer has a fracture toughness of 4.2 to 4.5 kJm−2 with negligible bulk hysteresis.
* Due to the ultrahigh strain -induced crystallization, the new elastomer has a high elastocaloric effect with an adiabatic temperature change of 9.3°C.
* The new elastomer is very easy to make and use. Many other amazing properties of the new elastomer are being studied by us and collaborators.
