During our successfully conducted visit today to Dr. Husam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, who was arrested in December 2024 and remains incarcerated in Israel, a serious and alarming picture emerged. Since his arrest, Dr. Abu Safiya has lost approximately 25 kilograms. He suffers from serious scabies and heart problems but is not receiving any medical treatment. It became clear during the visit that Dr. Abu Safiya has not been brought before a judge, investigated, or given any information about the reason for his arrest since March.

Today, on behalf of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s family, we filed an urgent request with the Israeli military for information on his current whereabouts. The director of Kamal Adwan #Hospital was abducted on Friday after refusing to leave until every last patient was evacuated.

The number of #Palestinians in Israeli custody has doubled since October 7, reaching 10,000 detainees and #prisoners. According to reports arriving from Israeli prisons and testimonies from recently released detainees, the Israel Prison Service is abusing Palestinians.

Since the ceasefire, Israel has rejected or ignored over 90% of requests for exit permits from Gazan patients seeking urgent medical care including cancer patients. Only 13 out of 191 were approved. Today we petitioned the Supreme Court to immediately overturn this policy.

The Israeli military refuses to allow Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, to meet with a lawyer to evaluate his state and detention conditions. Despite our urgent requests to send an attorney, the military says he's barred from lawyer visits until 10.01.2025.

Impersonating physicians and nurses during a military operation undermines the protections afforded to medical personnel in armed conflicts.

On October 13, 2023, the Israeli military ordered the evacuation of 22 hospitals in #Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip. That day marked the start of an unprecedented assault on Gaza’s health system. - Over the following 22 months, Israel systematically targeted Gaza’s medical infrastructure—bombing 33 of 36 hospitals and clinics, cutting off fuel and water, and killing or detaining over 1,800 medical staff. - Today, we are releasing a position paper that documents this assault for what it is: a deliberate, cumulative dismantling of Gaza’s health system and, with it, the population’s ability to survive. Since October 2023, over 250 medical personnel from Gaza — including doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other healthcare workers — have been detained. Many remain in custody without due process or a known release date. Most arrests occurred inside hospitals, where staff members were forcibly removed, stripped, humiliated, and severely beaten. Israeli authorities have yet to present concrete evidence linking the detainees to any security threat. Dr. Daphna Shochat reads the testimony of Dr. K.S., an orthopedic surgeon from Nasser Hospital.

Abuses include disconnecting the power and water supply, confiscating possessions, restricting prisoners to their cells, preventing access to medical clinics, and severe physical violence. The IPS is also restricting visits by legal representatives and other officials.

Severe shock and outrage followed the murder of six members of Dr. Mohmad Abu Salmiya’s family, the director of al-Shifa Hospital. Among those killed were his brother, wife, and two nephews. Seven other relatives, including his sister and her children, were injured. Reports also indicate that a man was buried beneath the rubble of their family home in the al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza, which was directly hit. - Dr. Abu Salmiya is widely recognized as a committed physician who consistently placed his patients’ needs above all else. He actively promoted medical cooperation and embraced initiatives to strengthen care at al-Shifa. Our delegations were always welcomed with respect and a spirit of partnership, leading to training opportunities in kidney transplantation and cardiac surgery for local staff. Even in the gravest circumstances—after al-Shifa itself was directly attacked, and following his release from Israeli detention after seven months, where he was held without charge along with hundreds of other medical professionals—he immediately returned to his duties. He coordinated patient lists for medical evacuations and continued his mission with steadfast dedication, even as Gaza’s health system collapsed around him. - He appealed to the international community for urgent intervention to protect hospitals and to end Israel’s systematic targeting of al-Shifa, strikes aimed at disabling the medical center once again, as had already occurred in November 2023 and April 2024. He emphasized the indispensable role of the hospital, highlighting its destruction as part of Israel’s broader effort to displace Gaza’s population. He further called for medical personnel to be allowed to carry out their responsibilities without obstruction. - In Gaza, devastated by the ongoing genocide, physicians remain on the front lines, treating hundreds of wounded and dead each day, while struggling to save lives even as their own loved ones are injured or killed. This professional and moral obligation has become especially harrowing under conditions that render both continued survival and the provision of care impossible.

Facebook removed our post under claims of "hate speech", so we're posting it here instead: Yesterday, the Israeli military launched an assault on Gaza, killing three Islamic Jihad commanders. At least 17 Palestinians were killed and 37 were wounded in the attack, primarily women and children. Among those killed were Dr. Jamal Khaswan, his wife Mervat, and their 21-year-old son Youssef, after the ceiling of their home collapsed. As with every military attack, Israel has announced the closure of the Erez crossing, preventing 142 patients from leaving Gaza for medical treatment, including cancer treatment and other humanitarian emergencies. Israel dismissed the civilian casualties as ‘collateral damage,’ but in reality, it was a premeditated decision directly resulting from decades of dehumanizing Palestinians. The Gaza Strip also consists of residential neighborhoods, hospitals, schools, and the dreams of its youth. Viewing them as military targets, collateral damage, or a "hasbara concern" is, at best, a moral failure and, at worst, evil.

The disconnecting of Palestinian prisoners from the outside world and the reports of abuse and violence are extremely concerning. In the last two days alone, two administrative detainees died in prison.

We demand the immediate release of all Palestinian healthcare workers detained unlawfully by Israel. Their detention serves no justice and directly undermines the right to health for the Palestinian population. It is imperative that the international community act to ensure their freedom, dignity, and ability to serve those in desperate need.

Members of the international medical community, citing PHRI’s recent report, have published a letter in @TheLancet - one of the world’s most respected peer-reviewed medical journals - calling on the Israel Medical Association (IMA) to uphold its ethical obligations and support an independent international investigation into medical conditions in Israeli detention facilities. - The IMA’s own code of ethics prohibits physicians from participating in torture or abuse and requires them to provide adequate medical care even in times of armed conflict. Yet mounting evidence of physician involvement in abuse, medical neglect, and the denial of life-saving care at institutions such as Assuta Medical Center and detention facilities like Saharonim and Sde Teiman indicates a blatant breach of these principles. - At the same time, the systematic destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system, including attacks on hospitals, clinics, and medical staff, constitutes a direct assault on medical neutrality and a flagrant violation of the IMA’s stated ethical commitments. - In their letter, physicians from around the world urge the IMA to endorse an independent international investigation into all detention facilities where medical care is provided, ensure that the findings are published transparently and made accessible to the global medical community, protect whistleblowers who expose ethical violations, and take a clear public stand against the targeting of medical personnel and infrastructure in #Gaza. - The integrity of medical ethics is measured by action, not by declarations. The IMA must enforce its ethical code and defend both human dignity and the medical profession in the face of torture, the denial of care, and the ongoing destruction of Gaza’s health system.

Obscuring the ability to distinguish between medical personnel and impostors endangers staff safety and damages patient trust, both during the actions and subsequently.

Dr. Abu Safiya described the violence perpetrated by prison guards during frequent cell searches. According to him, detainees receive very small amounts of food, many of them have lost a significant amount of weight, and they have been held in dirty clothes for months.

Israeli forces disguised as civilians stormed a hospital yesterday in the occupied West Bank city of #Jenin, killing three Palestinians. Some of the armed forces were dressed as #medical workers.

🚨 The red line has been crossed. Following a month of aerial bombardment of civilian and #medical infrastructure, a severe siege, and a ban on the entry of critical equipment for the continued operation of #hospitals – all hope seems lost.

Omar Daraghmeh, a 56-year-old without underlying #medical conditions, died in prison on October 11 – mere hours after telling his lawyer he felt well. Arafat Hamdan, a 25-year-old with diabetes, died in Ofer Prison on October 24, two days after his arrest.

Six months have passed since the publishing of our report, which documented the arbitrary detention of more than 100 medical personnel from Gaza. Since the report’s publication, our organization has visited more than 25 of them and gathered additional testimonies about ongoing physical violence, repeated cell raids, lack of food and medical treatment, and months of detention in dirty clothes. 1. Rather than accusing Amnesty of antisemitism, we must look at reality and the exclusion, dispossession, and oppression of Palestinians living under Israeli control, which did not begin in 1967, but dates back to Israel’s inception, with a direct impact on the right to health.

Dr. Abu Safiya requested to be examined by a doctor because of Scabies and heart problems, but his request was ignored. He takes regular medication for high blood pressure, but he testified that he has not been examined by an IPS doctor since his arrest. He has remained in the same clothes since his arrest and did not receive a new set of clothes until the morning of his visit.

Last week, Israel targeted the European #Hospital in Khan Younis, the last medical facility in the #Gaza Strip still providing cancer care. Following the strike, hundreds of patients - including women, men, and children - were evacuated from the compound. No facility remains in Gaza capable of treating them: all medicines have been exhausted, medical teams have been evacuated, and access to life-saving equipment has been completely cut off. - Even before the war, Israel controlled all aspects of medical care in the Gaza Strip - from the entry of medication and supplies to restricting diagnostic equipment, and conditioning medical evacuations on unpredictable security authorizations. Due to the lack of medical infrastructure, most cancer patients have been forced to request permission to leave Gaza for treatment, though only some have been granted authorization. - Since October 2023, the healthcare system in Gaza has entirely collapsed. Israel has bombed hospitals, blocked the entry of medical supplies, and destroyed vital infrastructure. The Turkish Hospital for cancer patients was decimated by Israeli forces a few months ago, and now the European Hospital has been subjected to the same fate. The only care still being offered is limited to symptom relief, and even that is provided under severe restrictions. - There are currently over 10,000 cancer patients in Gaza, including 4,000 children. After Israel’s devastation of Gaza’s healthcare system, the only remaining way to save their lives is through evacuation. - Yet even for this, Israel imposes severe obstacles: only a few dozen patients, if any, are allowed to evacuate each month, and only after prolonged waiting periods, enduring intense mental and physical stress, and following complex coordination with third-party countries. - Being a cancer patient in Gaza is a death sentence. The collapse of the local healthcare system is not a byproduct of war - it is part of a deliberate Israeli policy aimed at systematically dismantling vital humanitarian and civilian services crucial to the survival of residents. - Amid this catastrophic reality, we demand the immediate opening of a safe humanitarian corridor to evacuate patients from Gaza to East Jerusalem and the West Bank, along with the guaranteed entry of medication and life-saving medical equipment. We demand an end to the targeting of medical facilities and recognition of their protected status under international law.

We contacted several intl. bodies, including the ICRC, after our appeals to Israeli officials were ignored, urging them to pressure the IPS and other Israeli security bodies to adhere to the law and respect detainee rights. Concurrently, we also appealed to the High Court.

Even if Israel's assertions about the presence of operatives in the hospital are accurate, more proportionate measures could have been employed.

Breaking: Following our petition to the Supreme Court, the state will overturn its policy only allowing exit of Gazan patients whose lives are in immediate danger. Now patients who need lifesaving treatment & treatment unavailable in #Gaza are also eligible for exit permits.

Israel's initiative of loaning the PA vaccines is too little too late. It does not fulfill Israel's obligation of vaccinating all Palestinians living under its jurisdiction. It is highly doubtful that the PA will be able to use all the vaccines, as they are about to expire.

Despite clear documentation of his arrest, the army officially stated that it has no indication of the arrest or detention of the Kamal Adwan Hospital director, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.

Statements made yesterday by Dr. Guy Shalev, Executive Director of PHRI, during an interview with @CNN: Because of the high profile of Dr. Abu #safiya, the director of the last major hospital in #Gaza, the Army had to change their statement & say that they are indeed holding him. But the formal response that we got was that they don't have any indication of his whereabouts.

I was arrested on a Friday in mid-February at Nasser Hospital. During the transfer from the hospital to Baraksat, while inside the Posta (detainee transport vehicle), our eyes were covered, and our hands were handcuffed behind our backs. The soldiers poured cold water on us, kicked us, struck us with batons, punched us, and slammed my head against the bus railing. The next day, we arrived at the Sde Teiman detention facility, where I was held for fifty-two days. My hands remained handcuffed the entire time, and I was blindfolded. Due to the prolonged restraint, my wrists became inflamed. - When soldiers from ‘Force 100’ entered, they’d beat detainees severely. I was beaten until my ribs were completely broken, but no medical treatment was provided. As a result, I struggle to breathe. Other detainees told me that one prisoner, K., suffered a cardiac arrest and died after a brutal beating in March. The soldiers kept taunting him, saying, “You're the one who was raped.” He was deeply depressed. One day, they entered with dogs, assaulted him, and struck him on the head—he died immediately. - At Ofer, I still received no medical treatment for my fractured ribs. They eventually healed on their own but continue to affect my breathing till this day. Last July, after removing my handcuffs, there was sexual harassment. 6 #Palestinians died in Israeli #custody in recent weeks. Our volunteers participated in the autopsies of three of them - two, aged 25 and 58, suffered from preexisting conditions for which they seemingly weren't treated. A third appears to have been attacked by prison officers.

Last night, we sent an urgent letter to the Military Advocate General and Israel's Attorney General regarding over 240 sick and injured patients trapped in al-Shifa #Hospital in #Gaza – without access to food, medication, or treatment since Monday.

Sources at Erez Crossing: "Only life-saving cases" are allowed out of #Gaza. This morning we got a call from a #cancer patient who has a valid permit to travel to Jerusalem for chemotherapy & has been waiting for 2 weeks. She was sent home because her treatment isn’t lifesaving.

The hospital’s conduct is a vile attempt to pacify those demanding the blood of the detained patient and the physician caring for him. These actions have an influence on the medical staff, particularly Palestinian employees, and promote a culture of oppression and silencing.

1/Israel imposed a closure on Nablus this week after settlers attempted to block the city's entrance. Nablus is a medical hub serving Jenin, Tulkarm, Qalqilya, and many other towns and villages. We urge the medical community to oppose this severe violation of the right to health.

In addition, we reiterate the urgency – including within this context – of releasing the hostages held in Gaza. Those among them who experienced or witnessed sexual violence require urgent medical and mental health care within spaces and conditions that can allow them to heal.

In less than 70 days, the Israeli assault on #Gaza has killed 1% of its population and wounded an additional 2%. It is already among the deadliest military attacks of the 21st century.

By the time you read this, Kamal Adwan Hospital - may already have been reduced to rubble. - Three days ago, we petitioned Israel's Supreme Court, demanding an end to ongoing attacks on the hospital, the establishment of humanitarian corridors, and the delivery of essential supplies, and issuing an interim order to cease the attacks immediately. The court refused to take immediate action, leaving Kamal Adwan, its staff and patients under the deadly attacks. - On Thursday the Israeli bombings killed dozens of Palestinians in the hospital's area, including 3 medical staff and 2 paramedics, according to Palestinian Ministry of Health. This morning, around 7 AM, according to testimonies from the hospital, Israeli forces surrounded Kamal Adwan Hospital, demanding the hospital director, Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, gather all patients, injured, and staff within 15 minutes before threatening to cut off communication. Around 350 people were reportedly present at the hospital during the raid, including 75 patients and 180 medical staff and workers. All communications have been lost with the hospital and the medical staff. - Yesteday, we sent an additional request to the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing on the petition, to issue an interim order, and to do the only right thing: stop the attacks on the hospital and save the lives of the Palestinians who have nowhere else to go. - This escalation follows months of relentless violence. Since October 2024, we have witnessed Israel carrying out an ethnic cleansing campaign in northern Gaza. Thousands of people have been cut off from the outside world, struggling to survive amid continuous assaults and severe shortages of food, water, medicine, and infrastructure, with their future uncertain. - Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the hospital’s director, lost his 15-year-old son in one of the attacks and was later injured himself. Despite this, he has refused to leave the hospital or abandon his role, remaining steadfast in his commitment to caring for the sick and wounded. He has repeatedly sounded the alarm about the catastrophic conditions at the hospital, where incoming patients have been displaying signs of starvation, food and medication are critically scarce, and physicians are performing surgeries without the necessary training for such procedures. Dr. Abu Safia has also spoken of the many wounded individuals unable to reach the hospital, left to die in the streets or under the rubble. Time and again, he has turned to social media and spoken with journalists, pleading with the international community that has failed him. - We have twice appealed to COGAT following Dr. Abu Safia’s basic requests: to open a humanitarian corridor, allow the delivery of fuel, medicine, and water to Kamal Adwan Hospital, and grant access to surgical personnel. Yet, these appeals have been ignored. Meeting these demands is not a matter of Israel’s goodwill, but an obligation under international humanitarian law, which it must uphold as a military force operating in civilian areas. - Israel’s war crimes in northern Gaza have long shattered every red line, representing a deliberate and systematic campaign of destruction targeting the healthcare system and everything that sustains life. Meanwhile, the international community’s inexcusable paralysis and hollow condemnations has enabled Israel’s unchecked war machine. Palestinians in other areas of Gaza and the West Bank watch this unfold with justified fear, knowing their fate could be similar in the near future. - By the time you read this, Kamal Adwan Hospital, the last remaining medical facility in northern Gaza - the hospital that has been pleading for our support for the past 75 days - may already have been reduced to rubble, as reports indicate that Israeli forces have set fire to all sections of the hospital and detained patients and medical staff. We are still receiving the news, still trying to comprehend yet another unimaginable catastrophe. - We urge all organizations, both local and international, to closely follow these devastating developments and join the fight to save thousands of lives. Take to the streets in protest, contact elected officials, and support humanitarian organizations providing aid to the victims of this war. We must not and will not accept a reality where an entire population is forced to beg for its most basic needs.

Today, the court discussed Ahmed Manasra’s appeal for release. Ahmed was held in solitary confinement for over 6 months, and according to an expert opinion issued by one of our psychiatrists, his continued imprisonment will lead to irreparable damage.

We urgently call on all those with a conscience worldwide and on the international and medical communities: raise your voice now to protect all civilians in danger. It will be too late to do so tomorrow.

From all the innumerable horrors that have taken place since the beginning of the war, this new PHRI report and testimonies, detailing evidence by detained medical workers, nevertheless shook us to the core. As doctors, seeing our colleagues abducted from their workplaces, detained for months without charges in subhuman conditions, cruelly tortured, sexually abused, and denied medical treatment, is something we cannot live with, and neither should any of us.

Following a day of concerted efforts, we have succeeded - for now - in preventing the deportation of 20 Palestinian patients and their accompanying relatives back to Gaza, including children battling cancer and recovering from bone marrow transplants.

There is an increase in infections, and a full occupancy in #Palestinian hospitals in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Two hospitals have announced that cancer patients from Gaza cannot be admitted. And yet, Israel is neglecting its responsibilities of supplying #vaccines to the oPt.

Dr. Mahajna discovered that the hospital quickly issued a press release depicting him as a terrorist sympathizer. Before he could even tell his side of the story, he was summoned to a hearing before termination. >>

The department’s staff celebrated & decided to give out their leftover refreshments to patients – Among them was a 16yo Palestinian in police custody. The officers accompanying the patient complained to the hospital management about the physician’s decision to offer him candy. >>

Letters of support from patients and colleagues, all describing him as a caring and dedicated physician, proved useless. >>

We were horrified to hear today's reports about the risk to the life of 84-year-old Elma Avraham, who was released following 51 days in captivity in Gaza, during which it appears she did not receive life-saving medication.

Yesterday, we urged the health and religion ministers to prevent the burial of any unidentified bodies and remains collected from the 7/10 Attack until receiving approval from the Institute of Forensic Medicine.

We are morally obligated to push for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

It has been more than two weeks since we asked Israeli officials to locate the 21 physicians and #medical personnel arrested in #Gaza. We have yet to receive any response.

We, Israeli-Palestinian human rights organizations, stand in solidarity with Palestinian human rights organizations against the violent silencing by the U.S. administration Yesterday (Thursday, September 4, 2025), the U.S. administration intensified its assault on Palestinians and their rights by inflicting severe harm on key human rights organizations that have worked for decades to protect Palestinians. The U.S. administration imposed harsh sanctions on Al-Haq, Al-Mezan, and the Palestinian Center for Human Rights – solely because of their commitment to international law and its institutions. This is yet another move aimed at erasing fundamental norms of protecting human beings, designed to enable Israel to continue harming Palestinians without restraint. We stand in full solidarity with our colleagues and partners working for human rights between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, and especially in the face of the genocide that Israel is committing in the Gaza Strip. We will not yield to silencing or threats, and we will continue to struggle – together with partners across the world – for the protection of human beings and against regimes that seek to erase the most basic norms of humanity from the face of the earth.

After months of intense efforts to reveal the inhumane conditions and severe rights violations at the Sde Teiman detention facility, where Gazans have been held since the start of the war, the Israeli government and military could no longer deny the facts presented in our recent court petition.

18 human rights groups in Israel stand in solidarity with @DCIPalestine and other Palestinian colleagues targeted by Israeli authorities. We are united against any unlawful act to limit, intimidate, or undermine the important work being done by Palestinian civil society.

Even though several European States have announced they found no evidence of links to terror, the military raided the organizations' offices, confiscated equipment, and sealed off their doors. The evidence presented has not convinced a single country.

5,029 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the ICJ issued its provisional measures – an average of more than 100 deaths per day. In a joint letter with 11 other Israeli rights groups, we condemned Israel's failure to comply with the ICJ’s orders.

Over the last few hours, we've received horrifying reports from Shifa Hospital. There's no electricity, no water, no oxygen.

Last night, the Israeli military ordered the evacuation of Al-Awada Hospital within 2 hours, according to the hospital’s chief. At least 20 patients are hospitalized in the medical center, located on the outskirts of Jabalia. As of this morning, the staff is refusing to evacuate.

"To suggest he isn’t in custody is an insult to the public's intelligence. The events we experienced were very clear," Dr. Muhammad Brika of Kamal Adwan told us after hearing the Israeli military's claim that it wasn't holding hospital director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.

Two premature infants have died, and there is a real risk to the lives of 37 other premature infants. The Hospital is besieged, with no option to bring in the corpses and injured people sprawled outside. There is no movement in or out of the Hospital.

Al-Quds #Hospital in #Gaza contacted us yesterday after again receiving calls and messages from the Israeli military demanding its evacuation to the southern Gaza Strip.

For the past three weeks, since Hamas’s atrocities of October 7th, settlers have been exploiting the lack of public attention to the West Bank, as well as the general atmosphere of rage against Palestinians, to escalate their campaign of violent attacks

At least 147 Palestinians have died of #starvation so far, including 88 children. Meanwhile, under international pressure, Israel has begun allowing small amounts of aid into #Gaza and claims that it will continue doing so. Despite that, the death toll is expected to rise - both because many have already suffered irreversible damage and because the aid reaching Gaza is insignificant compared to the needs. - Many Palestinians in Gaza, especially #children, have passed the physiological point of no return. Continued starvation can lead to irreversible damage in multiple systems in the body including the gastrointestinal tract. At this point, death can occur even if the patient receives food - the body simply can no longer process it. - Israel’s aid policy has not changed. Since October 7, Israel has been using aid as a tool to manage international pressure and politically justify its criminal actions in Gaza. - On Monday, we published a report detailing how the Israeli military assault on Gaza amounts to genocide. The aid that Israel has now “agreed” to bring into the Strip will not erase what has already been done: the complete destruction of the conditions necessary for life. For the past 22 months, Gaza has gone through the destruction of its health sector, food systems, education, development, economy, and environment. - Don’t let limited aid, which barely even reaches the most vulnerable, distract from what is actually happening: genocide. - Governments and international bodies must act now to compel a ceasefire, restore Gaza’s health system, reinstate support mechanisms, ensure safe access to aid, and protect healthcare workers.

Together with six other human rights and civil society organizations in Israel, we have issued a statement expressing concern over the recent decision of 18 countries to suspend funding for the @UNRWA #Palestinian relief agency - and urging them to reverse their decision.

10 Palestinians, including a 72-year-old and a 16-year-old, were killed in an Israeli military raid in Nablus, according to Palestinian officials. 103 others were injured, and 7 remain in critical condition. For hours, the army prevented ambulances from evacuating the wounded.

Since the start of the war in #Gaza, we’ve been warning about the dangers faced by Palestinians in Israeli custody, while exposing and documenting the systematic violation of their rights.

Dozens of Israeli physicians signed a letter urging the military to destroy the “hornet nests and the hospitals shielding them” in the Gaza Strip.

Today, the Israeli court ruled to extend the detention of Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan #🩺Hospital, who was arrested in December 2024 and is being held in Israel without any charges. This comes despite the end of the war and despite the promise of his release. - #DrHussam continues to be held in unlawful detention, together with 17 other doctors and dozens of additional medical staff. - We demand the immediate release of all medical personnel held unlawfully in Israel. Their continued detention serves no real justice - it only harms the right to health of the Palestinian people. The recent release without charges of Dr. Muhammad Abu Salamiya, director of al-Shifa #Hospital in #Gaza City, who was arrested seven months ago, confirms what we have been warning about for months:

Israel’s assault on the #healthcare infrastructure in #Gaza has long passed the point of catastrophe. The deliberate and systematic attacks are paralyzing the local health system’s capacity to meet the needs of the over 50,000 wounded - with more added every hour -

2. Despite Israel’s attempts at fragmentation, Palestinians are a single ethnonational group, subjected to an institutionalized regime of oppression using law, policy, procedure, and practice and designed to perpetuate Jewish supremacy in the area controlled by Israel.

The arrest of soldiers suspected of severely sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman facility follows months of PHRI raising alarms about widespread abuses of Palestinian detainees by Israel’s military and prison service.

Israel's military offensive and the deadly attacks on medical facilities and personnel, essential for protecting civilian lives in Gaza, must be stopped.

"The second time I was arrested, they took me from Al-Shifa Hospital directly to a detention center. Along the way, they beat us with batons one after another and especially the doctors. They asked each detainee whether they were a doctor. I was interrogated more than eight times. They asked about the letter they had given me, and I told them what it contained. They ordered me to go to a school and bring the people out, using my status as a physician. I refused. Then, they asked me to go to a specific area wearing their military uniform and instruct them, but I refused again. Each time, they repeated the same questions about Hamas, tunnels, and hostages. I told them I had no connection to Hamas and knew nothing about the tunnels. During my December interrogation, I was beaten. In March, they also assaulted me, and the beatings on the way to the interrogations were especially severe. I still suffer from a back injury as a result." Thousands of Palestinian detainees have been tortured and abused in Israeli custody over the past 15 months, leading to dozens of deaths from violence and medical neglect, including 3 physicians. We must not let Dr. Abu Safiya and other detained healthcare workers join this toll.

3. We work with Palestinians of all statuses: residents of the oPt, Israeli citizens, Jerusalem residents, or status-less. Their right to health is violated in different ways with one commonality: systemic oppression of Palestinians and preservation of Jewish supremacy.
