Dallas, TX
Your Attorney General should deliver for you, not party bosses or billionaire donors. In the Senate, I've expanded health care, fortified the power grid, and led the fight against corruption in the highest levels of state government. I'm ready to deliver even bigger wins as AG.

Gerrymandering isn’t new — but here’s what is: a president calling a governor asking for five seats, and a Republican Party that just capitulates to those demands. Why? To dodge voter backlash for failed policies and broken promises. That’s not democracy. It’s dangerous.

Born in #Uvalde on February 2, 2012, Jayce Carmelo Luevanos was energetic and full of life. Jayce enjoyed having his friends in the backyard to play dinosaurs and ninjas. He was very close to his parents, a ten-year-old boy who wrote letters to his parents even though he lived with them. Jayce, a devoted grandson, would often wake up to brew his grandparents, Carmelo and Sylvia Quiroz, a pot of coffee each morning. Jayce’s parents, Christina Quiroz and José E. I join my Senate Democratic Caucus colleagues in calling on @TheJusticeDept to investigate whether Texas AG Paxton is unlawfully interfering with Texans' voting rights, on the false pretext of protecting election integrity. Perhaps I’m wrong, we’ll see. But it seems evident to me that his actions are nothing more than attempts to de-legitimize and undermine participation in the election. That’s not what I call election integrity. See the letter below:

The state of Texas has already outlawed abortion. What could be driving the state to sue Planned Parenthood under yet another bogus theory? A desire to deny Texans access to birth control, cancer screenings, and other preventive care? Although this judge’s record affords little basis for hope, I cannot help but hope for reason and law, not right wing judicial activism, to prevail. For decades, #PlannedParenthood providers have served Texans as the most reliable and in many cases the only source of affordable, quality health care. #TXLege @PPGreaterTX

Probably moot by now, but worth saying anyway: I don’t believe that the House Republicans had authority to order DPS to surveil the Democrats 24/7 as a way to prevent a quorum break. House members have the constitutional power to break quorum. The remaining legislators have the constitutional power to forcibly restore quorum (send DPS to arrest you!). But no one has the power to prevent a quorum break. Because if they did, there wouldn’t be a constitutional power to break. A look at the rules leads to the same conclusion. House Rule 5, section 8 (“Securing a Quorum”) provides that a group of House members can move for a “call of House” to secure a quorum, and condition the release of members from the chamber on pretty much anything they want. But once a quorum is established, there’s no basis to detain anyone. Moreover, the same Rule provides that under a “call of the House” the House cannot recess, it can only adjourn. Once it has adjourned… there is no quorum to be established. Also, creepy!

The @TexasHDC quorum break has nothing to do with “fleeing“, as the press so consistently mischaracterizes it. The break — an aggressive move, not a retreat — avails of the last available option, the only mechanism that offers any chance to stop the grave and possibly irreparable harm to democracy caused by mid-decennial redistricting. And although there may be sincere and legitimate questions about tactics, Republican compliance to the autocratic impulses of Donald Trump leaves no question as to who, as between Democrats and Republicans in the Texas Legislature, respects the voters.
