Flight attendant Amy Sweeney contacted the ground crew with critical information about the hijackers before losing her life during the horrific events of September 11, 2001. Each year, we honor her courage and selfless spirit with the Sweeney Award. This year, the Sweeney Award is presented to Jillian Smith of Wales. When Jillian saw her neighbors' home engulfed in flames, she didn't hesitate. She ran into the burning building not once, but twice to save their lives. I was proud to recognize her service with the 9/11 Fund and members of the Legislature today.

I toured The Pryde a few weeks ago and saw the beginnings of the vibrant community there. LGBTQ+ seniors are more likely to age alone, weighed down by a lifetime of discrimination. The Pryde is a safe, and welcoming place they can call home. Attacks on The Pryde are fueled by hate, plain and simple.

While I was the Mayor of Salem, we turned an old courthouse into a mixed-use development. We studied how to use empty land near the high school to create housing for teachers and school staff. The city is working now to transform a parking lot into transit-oriented housing.

Now, we’re taking another step forward for LGBTQ+ families – and all families held back by outdated notions of who can and can’t be a parent. However you welcomed your child into the world, including IVF, ART, and surrogacy, you are respected and protected in Massachusetts.
