It says: "We are deeply concerned about events in the Middle East and the anguish being experienced by people in Greater Manchester, most acutely in our Jewish and Muslim communities. "We condemn unreservedly the appalling terror attacks on innocent civilians in Israel by Hamas on 7th October. We recognise that Israel has the right to take targeted action within international law to defend itself against terror attacks and terrorist organisations and to rescue hostages. "We also have profound concerns about the loss of thousands of innocent lives in Gaza, the displacement of many more and widespread suffering through the ongoing blockade of essential goods and services. It is vital that urgent support and humanitarian aid is allowed into the area."

ALT Last night's documentary, 'Groomed: A National Scandal', was harrowing to watch. It laid bare the failures of the authorities at the time to protect children and brought home the full human impact of these appalling crimes through the words of the victims. These same systemic failures were exposed in 2017 by a previous documentary – The Betrayed Girls – which led me to commission a wide-ranging independent review into historic child sexual exploitation in Greater Manchester. Following the first report on Manchester in 2020, GMP launched Operation Greenjacket, which led to the reopening of two of the cases featured in the documentary. Three reports have now been published, also covering Oldham and Rochdale, and new investigations have led to 89 arrests and 71 years’ worth of convictions against abusers in the region. Just yesterday, three more suspects were arrested in Oldham as part of GMP's Operation Sherwood.
ALT The review has also led to a new inquest being ordered for Victoria Agoglia, the 15-year-old whose death was the catalyst for this whole process, and who was mentioned by one of the survivors on the programme. Investigations into historic child sexual exploitation are hard to conclude, and the programme rightly highlighted the frustration of the victims. We acknowledge that more needs to be done to support them and to bring more perpetrators to justice. The final part of the review launched in 2017 will be published next month. It will give a clear opinion on whether the Greater Manchester public can have confidence in the arrangements to protect children today. I have always been open about the limitations of a local process of inquiry which cannot compel those in authority to give evidence. That is why, alongside these local processes, I believe there is a clear case for a national inquiry focused on the accountability of decision-makers.

ALT Greater Manchester’s infection rate is reducing faster than any other part of the country but we have to accept that it is still significantly higher than the England average. That said, if the current rate of improvement continues, we will be asking the Government to move our city-region into Tier 2 in two weeks' time. What we believe is completely wrong is the Government’s decision to provide no additional business support to areas in Tier 3 than those in Tiers 1 and 2. The new Tier 3 will hit the hospitality sector extremely hard. While there are grants for businesses forced to close, there is no extra support for business which supply them like security, catering and cleaning.
ALT This will cause real hardship for people whose jobs will be affected and risks the loss of many businesses. Ministers need to explain how they believe it is fair for Tier 3 areas to get no more support than those in Tiers 1 and 2. They also need to explain why places with high numbers of hospitality businesses – like city centres – get the same population-based grant as more suburban and rural areas with fewer businesses affected. The effect of these policy decisions will be to level down the economies of city-regions across the North. It is unfair and the opposite of what the Government has promised to do. Ministers must review this and provide more financial support to Tier 3 areas.

"We have been informed that a referral has now been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for a full investigation."
