We are aware of a video that has been shared on social media following an incident in Shadwell on Thursday. It has been suggested that the video shows a "wrongful arrest". We have issued the statement below which we hope will provide some helpful clarity.
We were called to Watney Street after calls about youths throwing flour and eggs. On arrival, officers saw a male throwing eggs at a police vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. A crowd gathered and extra officers were called in to restore order. The male, 16, was taken to a police station where he made a full admission and apologised. The matter was dealt with by a Community Resolution Order.

We have released an update on the disorder that took place in Whitechapel yesterday evening.
Shortly before 20:00hrs on Thursday, 18 July a number of 999 calls were received reporting disorder in Greatorex Street, Whitechapel.   Local officers responded quickly and on arrival found two large groups of men fighting in the street amongst a wider demonstration of several hundred.   Officers intervened to separate the groups and one man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence. Protective shields were used as the officers formed a barrier between opposing crowds. Projectiles were thrown towards them and two officers sustained injuries as a result.   A number of cars were damaged during the incident. Resources from elsewhere in London were deployed to the area to provide further support.   It is believed the disorder was linked to protests in Bangladesh in recent days that have resulted in fatalities.
