London Mayor Sadiq Khan repeatedly refused to apologise to a Met firearms officer acquitted of Chris Kaba's murder. Kaba was shot dead by Sergeant Martyn Blake as he tried to ram his car past police cars during a police stop in Streatham in September 2022. London Assembly member Susan Hall put Khan under pressure saying he should apologise for not being balanced enough in his support to the officer and his family following murder trial and public reaction. During the heated exchange the Met Commissioner confirmed Kaba had been a 'core member' of the notorious '67 gang' in Brixton Hill, information which had not been released to the public while the trial was ongoing.

The #PrincessofWales has said she is “delighted” and “looking forward” to working with Dwayne Fields, after he was announced as the UK’s new chief scout. Adventurer Mr Fields, the first black Briton to reach the North Pole, was confirmed as Bear Grylls’ successor in the role by the Scouts on Thursday. The group, which was formed by Sir Robert Baden-Powell in 1907, has a membership of some 500,000 young people and adult volunteers across the country. The princess, who is joint-president of the Scout Association, said in an X post: “Delighted to welcome @DwayneFields as the new UK Chief Scout. “The Scouts is such an incredible organisation, teaching #SkillsForLife and making a huge difference to young people across the country. “Looking forward to working with you! C” Kate began her support for Scouts as a volunteer while living on Anglesey and has been “a great friend” of the movement, according to the organisation’s website. Chief scouts are appointed for a five-year tenure but may serve for a longer period. Mr Fields will be the 11th person to hold the title.

The #DukeofSussex is to celebrate the achievements and resilience of seriously ill youngsters and their families during a rare UK visit. #PrinceHarry will attend the WellChild awards ceremony in London in his role as the charity’s patron, a position he has held for more than 15 years. The visit will raise speculation about whether Harry and his estranged brother the #PrinceofWales will see each other, or if the duke will make a trip to Scotland to spend time with his father the King. It appears unlikely the royal siblings will make contact as the pair reportedly did not talk when they attended a family funeral in August in the UK. The King is believed to be spending time at his Balmoral home and it is thought he has not seen Harry since the duke rushed to his father’s side after Charles’s cancer diagnosis was announced in February. The WellChild awards celebrate the inspiring qualities of some of the country’s seriously ill young people and the dedication of those who keep them healthy and happy, including health, social care and education professionals. Harry regularly attends the annual event hosted by WellChild, the national charity which provides a nationwide network of nurses, home makeover projects and family support programmes. Before the big event the duke will attend a reception to meet the category winners and their families before joining guests for the private awards ceremony where he will present the Most Inspirational Child (aged four to six) award and deliver a short speech.

The #Duke of Sussex “is one of two claimants whose claims are still live” against the publisher of The Sun over allegations of unlawful information gathering, his barrister has told the High Court. A hearing on Friday heard that Harry, 40, and former Labour deputy leader Tom Watson are now the only people continuing their claims against News Group Newspapers (NGN) after several others settled their cases. The two remaining cases are expected to go to trial in January 2025, with Harry alledging he was targeted by journalists and private investigators working for NGN, which also published the now-defunct News Of The World. The publisher has previously denied unlawful activity took place at The Sun. Speaking on Friday, David Sherborne, for the claimants, said: “The Duke of Sussex is one of two claimants whose claims are still live in this matter. He continued: “The reduction of the live claims to just two is a pretty recent development.” The two sides have returned to court in London asking a judge to rule on preliminary issues before the trial next year, with Lord Watson in attendance at the hearing. Many others have settled their claims in recent years including actor Hugh Grant, actress Sienna Miller, ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne, comic Catherine Tate and Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm. At a hearing in April, the High Court in London heard that Mr Grant had settled his case against NGN because of the risk of a £10 million legal bill if his case went to trial. Mr Sherborne said at the earlier hearing that “the Duke of Sussex is subject to the same issues that Sienna Miller and Hugh Grant have been subject to, which is that the offers are made that make it impossible for them to go ahead”. Grant said he was offered “an enormous sum of money to keep this matter out of court” that he did not want to accept.

The #DukeofSussex was all smiles for a rare royal event in the UK – honouring the achievements of youngsters battling serious conditions. #PrinceHarry swept into London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel to meet children, teenagers and their parents who will be recognised with awards from the charity WellChild. As WellChild’s patron for more than 15 years, Harry has regularly attended the awards ceremony staged by the organisation, the national charity for seriously ill children and their families. WellChild chief executive Matt James said Harry’s involvement with the charity was “huge for us”. He added: “It does two things, it allows us to give our inspiring winners a night they will never forget, a night that will always stay with them. “But also, it provides us with a platform to tell their stories which is really important for a group of families whose challenges often go unrecognised and misunderstood.” The awards celebrate the inspiring qualities of some of the country’s seriously ill young people and the dedication of those who keep them healthy and happy, including health, social care and education professionals.

The #PrincessofWales will host her annual Christmas carol concert this year, with the service reflecting on “how much we need each other, especially in the most difficult times of our lives”. #PrincessKate who is recovering from cancer after what the Prince of Wales described as a “brutal” year, is going ahead with her televised festive event at Westminster Abbey on 6 December, Kensington Palace announced. The princess set her sights on being able to stage the Together At Christmas service in 2024 despite the health challenges she has faced, and it forms part of her gradual return to public duties after finishing chemotherapy treatment in the summer. The Palace said Kate particularly wanted the service’s theme to celebrate those supporting others in need, with a focus on the importance of love and empathy. It will be the fourth time Kate has staged her Together At Christmas carol service, which is supported by The Royal Foundation. The event will be filmed and broadcast as part of a special programme on ITV1 and ITVX on Christmas Eve. Members of the royal family will gather with the princess as some 1,600 people fill the abbey in London to see musical performances by stars including Paloma Faith, Olivia Dean and Gregory Porter. Among the invited guests will be those who have supported others, either on a personal level with friends and family, or through their work or volunteering. Names have been nominated by charities associated with the royal family, and by Lord Lieutenants, the King’s representatives in counties across the UK. The Middleton family, who are said to have been a great source of support to Kate during her illness, usually attend, and last year Kate and William brought along Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Decorations at the abbey will be inspired by nature and the service will combine traditional and modern elements to encompass people of all faiths and none.

The Duke of Sussex, Sir Elton John and Baroness Doreen Lawrence can continue their unlawful information gathering claims against the publisher of the Daily Mail, after it lost a bid to have the cases thrown out at the High Court. The trio are among a group of high-profile individuals – including David Furnish, Sadie Frost, Liz Hurley and Sir Simon Hughes – who brought legal action against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL). They have accused the publisher of allegedly carrying out or commissioning unlawful activities such as hiring private investigators to place listening devices inside cars, “blagging” private records and accessing and recording private phone conversations. At a hearing in March, ANL, which firmly denies the allegations, asked a judge to rule in its favour without a trial, arguing the legal challenges against it were brought “far too late”. In a ruling on Friday, Mr Justice Nicklin said ANL had “not been able to deliver a ‘knockout blow’ to the claims of any of these claimants”.

The #PrincessofWales is to attend both the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph and the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall this weekend, Buckingham Palace has announced. It marks the next significant step in Kate’s gradual return to public royal duties as she prepares to join the King and the Prince of Wales to honour the nation’s war dead. The announcement comes after William candidly spoke of how 2024 has been “brutal” and “probably been the hardest year in my life”, with both Kate and the King diagnosed with cancer. #PrincessKate, who revealed eight months ago she had an undisclosed form of the disease, will attend the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday evening and then the national commemoration at the Cenotaph on Sunday. It will be the first time she has carried out two consecutive days of public official engagements since the start of the year. The Queen’s attendance over the weekend will, however, be subject to medical advice nearer the time. Camilla, 77, is unwell with a chest infection and was forced to pull out of engagements earlier this week. #KingCharles, who recently completed his first long haul overseas tour since his own cancer diagnosis, will lay a wreath of poppies at the base of the memorial, leading the nation in tribute to its fallen servicemen and women.

The #PrinceofWales fitted a car with an eco-tyre made by one of the finalists from his Earthshot Prize and was dubbed a “professional” for his efforts. #PrinceWilliam got to grips with the 17-inch alloy wheel fitted with a tyre made by ENSO, a start-up shortlisted last year in the Clean Our Air category of William’s global environmental competition. The company has announced a three-year partnership with delivery and ride-hailing service Uber. Thousands of drivers in the UK and US will be offered access to specially discounted ENSO tyres via a dedicated buyers’ club. He said: “What fantastic progress you’ve made – you’re going higher and higher.” The company’s founder Gunnlaugur Erlendsson spoke about plans to open a tyre factory in the US and the funding they secured after the Earthshot prize-giving ceremony hosted in Singapore in 2023. Tyres emit six million tonnes of pollution around the world each year, with their constant friction on the roads releasing harmful invisible micro-pollutants, which increase the risk of heart disease, asthma and other conditions. ENSO has created a more efficient, low emission tyre for electric vehicles which reduces particle pollution by 35% and is calibrated to improve durability. William gave sales technician Andrew Bernard a hand in fitting the wheel of an electric Kia Niro car that is popular with Uber drivers. He commented he had changed a few wheels before. Uber has also become a founding partner of William’s Earthshot Prize, which aims to recognise and scale up solutions to “repair” the planet, and will nominate climate solution start-ups for the annual award. Almost 30% of Uber miles in London are now fully electric, Uber said as it hailed the city as its worldwide “capital of electrification”.

The Princess of Wales’ annual carol service will feature a bespoke illustration by Charlie Mackesy, celebrating themes of love and kindness after a difficult year. #PrincessKate who is recovering from cancer after what the Prince of Wales described as a “brutal” year, will be staging her televised Together At #Christmas service at Westminster Abbey on 6 December . The event, which will be attended by 1,600 people – including members of the royal family, is a key milestone in her gradual return to public duties after finishing chemotherapy treatment in the summer. An illustration by British artist Charlie Mackesy – which embodies the service’s themes of kindness, love and empathy – will be featured on the Order of Service. The image depicts a snowy scene with a group of people walking arm in arm towards Westminster Abbey, accompanied by the words “How did I help? You were by my side, which was everything.” Alongside the Order of Service, each guest will receive a special letter from the princess thanking them for all they have done to provide comfort and hope to those in need, telling them “Love is the light that can shine bright, even in our darkest times”. During the past year, the princess has returned to public duties after being treated for cancer, while the King is still under the care of cancer specialists, and the service aims to provide a moment of reflection about the importance of loved ones, especially during difficult times. Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, will light a candle; as will Lindsey Burrow, the wife of former rugby league star Rob Burrow – who died in June following a much-publicised battle with motor neurone disease. Readings, linked to the theme of love and empathy, will be made by the #PrinceofWales and a host of stars including actors Richard E Grant, Downton Abbey actor Michelle Dockery, Sophie Okonedo -, nominated for an Oscar for her role in the film Hotel Rwanda, and Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty. The festive event will be broadcast as part of the Royal Carols: Together At Christmas programme, airing on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm on Christmas Eve.
