My thoughts on mastering data structures and algorithms as a self taught dev. If you've learned to code on your own or through a bootcamp, you may be tempted to grind Leetcode very hard next because that's what's recommended so often. Before you do that, consider: *thread*

I was the person who blew it in their 20s. Fumbled through my 30s and *just* launched a successful tech career in my 40s. One could say I'm 25 years behind, or I'm right where I'm supposed to be. In maturity, I eagerly celebrate those who pursued their path early as well as we who figured it out much later in life.

I was working graveyard shift driving forklifts at my 2nd restart in life.(my tech career transition is actually my 3rd). I saw her across the warehouse floor, watched her walk to her station and told my coworker Joe, “Joe, that’s the one right there. I gotta meet her”. I walked over, introduced myself and a few days later asked her out. She said no. Devastated in one sense but determined in another, I thought “well I just gotta try something else”. I kept speaking with her each night and eventually she took me up on that 1st date, a visit to a local community fair where we walked, talked, ate funnel cakes and spent most of our time in the gospel area. We almost broke up when despite having great times together, we couldn’t seem to get on the same page regarding timing for marriage. We planned one last hang out where we were going to eat WingStop, watch a movie, and call it quits. As the evening wound down we were both HURT. Neither of us really wanted to do what we had planned. So we didn’t . We decided to just “give it a whirl” which at the time meant continue the relationship with a renewed commitment to figuring out what appeared to be an impasse. This was PIVOTAL in giving us both the confidence that so long as we keep God first in all we do and plan, there’s nothing we can’t figure out together. 2 years later we got married. 2 years after that we had our Nina. Happy to say Happy Mother’s Day to my Joy, wife of nearly 18 years and sometimes it feels like we’re just getting started. Love you babe.

As my pastor spoke this morning on ‘scars’, I reflected on how much social media presence and influence centers on hiding one’s scars and flaws and presenting the most perfect images possible. But that’s the thing, they’re just images and not reality. In that vein, I’d like to share a few personal facts. Some people think the remarkable The remarkable thing about my story is getting started in tech at 46 years of age. What many don’t know is I should have been here 30 years ago. I should have graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering from MIT in 1993 but instead I screwed it all up in the worst way and flunked out after 3 semesters. Many of you congratulated me on my 17 years of marriage to my lovely wife Joy. We indeed enjoy a wonderful blessed relationship for which I am eternally grateful. What you don’t know is I had a first marriage as well, 5 tumultuous years of pain mostly caused by me. A disaster that still has reverberating negative effects on my first born to this day. I could go on for quite awhile but I think you get the point. The numbers you see behind someone’s name whether it is follower count, number of views, or some other scalar, has in a social media context little to no relationship with the most important thing you need to know about that person which is the content of their character. I’m just on my soapbox this afternoon yelling out into the void to not let the carefully crafted photos and storylines fool you. More importantly, don’t ever devalue yourself because you don’t have some artificial numbers attached to your name, causing you to do all sorts of strange things to force people to look at you or look at your post or look at your Twitter space. These are unhealthy habits, long-term. If you are a person who demonstrates valuable knowledge or characteristics , and there are still people in the world who value that value, you will eventually attract the right people into your space. I am a witness. Have a blessed Sunday.

In 2019, the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (comprised of Dems and Repubs) concluded the Russian operatives used social media to deter black people from voting and planted subtly racist content to incite conflict between ethnicities. Through the Internet Research Agency, they created fake profiles of black people with pro-black messaging and imagery then steered messaging to stir up strife within the community and not trust/vote for Hillary Clinton. To date, no social media entity has conclusively eliminated this practice. bbc.com/news/technology-4998… intelligence.senate.gov/site…

My first offer for my first job in tech was part-time as an intern making $12.00/hr. I was a 46-year-old man with a wife, kids, and a mortgage but I accepted it. I had no idea days later I'd be called for an additional interview and as a result of that interview have the offer bumped up to a fulltime role. I had no idea but I was willing to take the leap. I'm sharing pieces of the offer letter because Claire Huxtable said "let the record show" 😂. I was so excited I started to make the video below. While I never finished the video, I have taken advantage of numerous opportunities since then to tell my story and share an example for other adults considering a transition into a technical career. Some relevant things in this short clip is that it is filmed from the "lonely loft" I've spoken of in numerous podcasts and Twitter spaces. You'll see a goals board behind me which I have spoken about many times as well. Those stories aren't fairy tales; this is my life. You'll notice on the board a goal of being hired in 2017. I didn't make it. I 100% did not achieve that goal. But I kept going and that's all I want to share with someone who may need encouragement today. No matter where someone may appear to me, often there's so many bumps in the road, setbacks, and letdowns that they may or may not choose to share. Don't YOU go feeling down in the dumps because of setbacks - we all have them. ALL OF US. Keep learning, building, teaching, pressing, pushing, strategizing, applying, relating, growing, and most importantly, KEEP GOING.
