New York Mets play-by-play broadcaster @metsradio880 @audacy | @snytv Contributor | Dayton Flyer | Notorious for Irish Goodbyes Instagram: @keithrraad

New York, NY
Jesse Winker was in my first MiLB clubhouse in 2013 with the Dayton Dragons. One day at a host family BBQ for the whole team, I’m sitting on the floor of the living room and Jesse comes over to hang. While watching some random game on TV he was asking me how a broadcaster gets to the majors, what the path is, what my dreams were. Took the time to make a connection and wished me luck. In the following 9.5 years in the minors it turns out not everyone is that kind. Cool to be broadcasting him again 11 years later with the 2024 Mets.

Christian Scott making his MLB debut tonight is a perfect example of player development getting its hands on a motivated player. In college, Scott was a two-seamer guy with a gyro slider who could go through an order once: that has reliever written all over it. Mets development scrapped the arsenal and rebuilt him with a 4-seamer, split change, and a sweeper. Immediate and instant results. Big league starter.

Brett Baty is simply doing what Brett Baty has always done: hit. Player development is never a perfect timeline. Good on him for handling the boos, demotions & still finding a way to not give up or cave in to the pressure. A player like that is exactly what this city is about.

These are good trades. Franchise-altering trades. Just major gut punches to the reality of how the expectations of the 2023 Mets fell incredibly short of what was possible. They really went for it in FA. They’ve really gone for it in restocking.

Billy Eppler’s 2023 trade deadline totally served the Mets, setting up the org for 2024 and beyond. He had to know his future was uncertain with Stearns coming in. Still made the right moves. Also, I wonder how much of an advantage he would have been in potential talks with Ohtani and Yamamoto, knowing Eppler’s strong track record with Japanese players.

First off, Mets broadcast is not going anywhere. We are still going to be found on 880, Audacy app, MLB app, etc. Second, it’s been an unbelievable privilege to say “WCBS” out loud on a nightly basis. So much reverence and respect for the legacy that this station built.
