Jesse Winker was in my first MiLB clubhouse in 2013 with the Dayton Dragons. One day at a host family BBQ for the whole team, I’m sitting on the floor of the living room and Jesse comes over to hang. While watching some random game on TV he was asking me how a broadcaster gets to the majors, what the path is, what my dreams were. Took the time to make a connection and wished me luck. In the following 9.5 years in the minors it turns out not everyone is that kind. Cool to be broadcasting him again 11 years later with the 2024 Mets.
It’s official. The next stop is Queens.
Honored to join the Hall of Famer @HowieRose in the @WCBS880@Mets radio booth for the 2023 season. It’s not just a dream come true, it’s the dream come true.
Thanks everyone for listening. The last 8 months were truly unforgettable. What a story we got to tell.
Came to the park every day wondering what kind of magic we’d get to see. No better feeling.
See you all in 2025.
This Mets offense has made life miserable in June for:
Ronel Blanco
Luis Gil
Gerrit Cole
Javier Assad
Shota Imanaga
Jon Gray
Dylan Cease
MacKenzie Gore
Brandon Pfaadt
Good list.
BREAKING: Astros mascot Orbit decides to offend the entire state of New York with a disgusting display of eating pizza with a knife and fork. Ugly, ugly scene.
The Mets congratulate @HowieRose on 50 years of broadcasting. While he’s on the field getting a jersey from Mike Piazza, we’re gonna dig into his cupcakes. Don’t tell him.
Quite a dramatic week for the Mets but they take 2/3 from the Dodgers. Now both teams are exactly…
NYM 32-21 (+59 run differential)
LAD 32-21 (+59 run differential)
Emotional last two days getting a chance to get started with @HowieRose on @wcbs880, calling games for an organization that has been a family to me for six years. Broadcasting players I’ve known through the system, seeing them in action alongside some of the big leaguers, and getting to tell their stories has meant the world. Just getting started, @Mets fans. See you on the air next weekend.
So @KeithRaad had an observation - Mets brought 11 runners to the plate in the 9th on 9/11
Keith is quite good and makes it almost ok to not have Howie
Surprise, surprise from @HailStateBB. @jakemangum15 gets paid a visit from “Big E.” Everett Kennard (@Dogbusdriver) his bus driver from Mississippi State and his wife Henrisue had a gift for Jake.
Christian Scott making his MLB debut tonight is a perfect example of player development getting its hands on a motivated player.
In college, Scott was a two-seamer guy with a gyro slider who could go through an order once: that has reliever written all over it.
Mets development scrapped the arsenal and rebuilt him with a 4-seamer, split change, and a sweeper. Immediate and instant results. Big league starter.
Brett Baty is simply doing what Brett Baty has always done: hit.
Player development is never a perfect timeline. Good on him for handling the boos, demotions & still finding a way to not give up or cave in to the pressure. A player like that is exactly what this city is about.
The beautiful part about this sport is despite all of the well-thought-out hunches, all of the evidence, and all of the odds for this and that…
We still have NO idea what’s about to happen.
Walking through the bowels of Guaranteed Rate Field, a White Sox employee pleaded with me saying “win, please. We hate the Cubs. Do NOT let them pass you in the standings.”
And then he walked away.
A true Chicago rivalry story.
These are good trades. Franchise-altering trades.
Just major gut punches to the reality of how the expectations of the 2023 Mets fell incredibly short of what was possible.
They really went for it in FA. They’ve really gone for it in restocking.
Billy Eppler’s 2023 trade deadline totally served the Mets, setting up the org for 2024 and beyond. He had to know his future was uncertain with Stearns coming in. Still made the right moves.
Also, I wonder how much of an advantage he would have been in potential talks with Ohtani and Yamamoto, knowing Eppler’s strong track record with Japanese players.
First off, Mets broadcast is not going anywhere. We are still going to be found on 880, Audacy app, MLB app, etc.
Second, it’s been an unbelievable privilege to say “WCBS” out loud on a nightly basis. So much reverence and respect for the legacy that this station built.
By the way, I’m really happy that my new partner, heretofore known as Young Keith (@KeithRaad) has had the chance to call these 10th inning game winning hits. They sound great, and it’s exciting for me to see a young announcer enjoy his first taste of big league broadcasting.
David Stearns is 38 years old. He just finished an 8-season tenure with Milwaukee.
Can’t forget how this guy was a big league GM at 30 years old…and had major success.
In 2021 in Coney Island Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty hit back-to-back home runs.
They just did the same thing at Citi Field in 2023.
I called both. The first instance was in front of a couple thousand fans. The second...well, in front of a few more.
Philly Cheesesteak Egg Roll courtesy of Wok N’ Roll at Citi Field.
Cheesy, melty, crunchy, meaty, and delicious.
It’s true you can love something from Philly while not actually loving Philly.
Super early just two starts in, but here's how good Kodai Senga's ghost forkball has been vs. big league hitters:
xBA is .038 which is the lowest xbatting average against one pitch for a starter so far
+
the ghost fork has a 60% whiff rate (now ya see me now ya don't) which ranks 14th in the league.
For those of you — and you’re out there — who said, “the game is on what today?”
We’re here for you the old fashioned way for a 12:05 p.m. first pitch.
Along with his major bounce back year on the mound, Luis Severino may win a Gold Glove. He leads all National League pitcher with 6 Defensive Runs Saved. He and Cleveland's Tanner Bibee are tied for the Major League lead.
The people at Just Salad in Port St Lucie have started to catch on that I’ve now come here eight days in a row. I can’t blame them for the weird looks.
