Don't let work become a habit because you've forgotten how to live any other way. And don't judge colleagues who work less hard. The ultimate 'duty of care' is to yourself. Pinching myself to remember! @AcademicSurgery @ELAMProgram #WorkLifeBalance
Breastfeeding has benefits but pumping results in ⬇️productivity/pay. For MDs, a 30min lactation hold/half day clinic session for 1 yr from birthdate & 1.5 wRVU credit per hold will be provided. Similar for APPs. Thanks for lactation RVUs @UCSFHospitals & @UCSF! #WomenInSTEM
Today my father stood for the first time in several months. He is 92. No professional milestone will ever bring me the joy or gratitude I feel today. #MedTwitter#family#Grateful
The former me never thought this day would come: I've been invited to write a commentary & give a national talk about becoming dept chair as a member of the #LGBTQ community. We CAN (must) change culture & be visible. #MedTwitter @UCSFODO #DiversityandInclusion@OutSurgeons
An overdue addition to my email signature block:
'I value your response to my email messages, but respond according to your schedule. No need to respond on evenings, weekends or holidays.'
Please join the movement! #MedTwitter#wellness#WorkLifeBalance
Honoring my Dad on this #NationalLatinoPhysicianDay. He immigrated from Guatemala to Canada and then the U.S. and became a cardiologist, teacher, and role model. We need many more like him in medicine and surgery. #SiSePuede @UCSFODO #nationalLatinxPhysicianDay
What is the best news a daughter can get at the end of 2020? That the Moderna vaccine is coming to her 85/90 yr old parents’ retirement community and they are in line. Hallelujah!
Here’s a novel, long overdue concept: @UCSFSurgery Morbidity & Mortality conference replaced by Gratitude & Good Outcomes grand rounds. ‘G & G’ instead of M & M. Inspired & lifted up by the good work & courage of @UCSF colleagues! #ucsfproud
The @AmCollSurgeons Society of Surgical Chairs Women’s Committee - thankful for our sisterhood. Supporting each other. Hoping to grow even more. #MedTwitter#WomenInSTEM
Two surgeons sitting by a patient’s bedside, one in scrubs & the other in a Surgery Dept jacket w/ name & degrees on the chest. Staff comes to draw blood & we ask what tests are included. He says ‘The one’s the doctor ordered. Are you nurses?’ 🤔 1/2
So, #burnout is extending to every level of medicine & surgery, including leadership. We expect our mentors & leaders to be teflon-coated heroes. But that's not the case. So please extend understanding & thanks up, down & around. #medtwitter
Last yr was exhausting. Being a surgeon & Chair is hard but doing it as an (only) daughter caring for aging, ill parents seems impossible. We MUST create a more supportive community, inventory/avail resources & provide paid eldercare leave. #MedTwitterjamanetwork.com/journals/jam…
Honestly, we never seem to be senior enough to escape stereotypes & we never quite outgrow the disappointment of mistaken identities. Even a small interaction like this adds to burnout over time. 2/2 #MedTwitter@WomenSurgeons#WomenInSTEM#ILookLikeASurgeon
3 yrs (& a pandemic!) ago, we arrived with 2 suitcases for our dream jobs at @UCSFSurgery. Takeaways: Find your personal & professional home. Be flexible. Embrace change. The job has changed so much...and I still love it! 🙏 @UCSF @UCSFHospitals!
Yup, that’s right. My 85 and 90 year old parents got vaccinated AND figured out how to take and send photos for the FIRST time from their iPhone. The world is indeed brighter today! PS. I think my dad is flexing his bicep...😳!
So this Chair hit a *temporary* pandemic wall last week. So I deferred on 2 evening invitations, rested and regrouped, and am back at 110%. Lesson: self care is not abdication. It is essential self preservation. Bring it! #wellness#Wellbeing#medtwitter
With the holidays here, @UCSFSurgery switches M&M out for 'Gratitude and Good Outcomes' to give thanks for surgical science and celebrate our extraordinary colleagues' 'saves'. Thank you @wshen16 for creating these. #medtwitter#MedStudentTwitter
For #HispanicHeritageMonth I'm honoring this man, who went from 🇬🇹➡️🇨🇦➡️🇺🇸, overcoming bias & discrimination to become a cardiologist, professor, role model & inspiration. Thanks Dad! He's 93 & a trailblazer. <6% #latinos in medicine is not enough. #SiSePuede#MedTwitter
A call to med-surg societies/journals offering gendered titles like Ms Miss Mrs Mr: Our #nonbinary med students need other options, like Mx, No title. Appealing for a non-binary coauthor; it’s a barrier to submitting our manuscript on your website. Thanks! #MedTwitter#Pride2022
The older I get, the more I believe we're measuring 'impact' wrong. Example: Getting a thank you email from a college student who felt supported at a meeting by your using pronouns & being your authentic self is worth >>20 pubs. By a lot. @womeninsurgery#MedTwitter#diversity
Epidemiologists, virologists and other scientists like #DrFauci should talk more, politicians less. We need to lower the political noise to hear the evidence to better protect our patients, #HealthCareWorkers & general public. #ScienceSunday
After a long period of popular backlash against experts and expertise, societies besieged by isolation and desperate for the truth about the coronavirus outbreak are turning to scientists for answers, making them into national heroes in the process nyti.ms/2UK28PS
Morning! #MyNameIs Julie Ann. From Latin - Young, Jove’s child. From @urbandictionary - happiest girl in the world. To my family, named after my dad Julio Antonio. We are Guatemalan and immigrants. We are America. @LatinasInMed#Vote
Back in Baltimore which presents the opportunity to celebrate 20 yrs 😳 post @hopkinssurgery graduation…with my former self. Still smiling & thankful at @UCSFSurgery after all those years! #MedTwitter#Match2023
Pretty simple: Saying thanks at the end of the case to EVERYONE in the room - anesthesiologists, learners, nurses and staff. A little gratitude goes a long way. Some people look surprised; all look pleased. Don't forget! #MedTwitter#MedStudentTwitter
When the chief resident, fellow and attending work together to take the intern through their first lap chole. It’s a great feeling for everyone! #MedTwitter#MedStudentTwitter
Being a surgeon is hard but being a daughter (with elderly parents) is even harder. Hands down. Doing both sometimes seems nearly impossible. Great colleagues and friends are critical. #MedTwitter#WorkLifeBalance#WomenInSTEM
Running into more elated faculty who've received vaccine. Observation: The most common side effect is NOT injection site soreness. It's smiling & talking about their shot! And I love it!! It's the best way to say happy holidays.😊
Reflection after interviewing our exceptional @UCSFSurgery residency applicants: Discussions this year were importantly different from the past. Virtually everyone asked about #diversity, #SocialJustice & #equity. Our profession is evolving! #MedStudentTwitter
Plea to my colleagues: Let's agree to eliminate the term 'virgin abdomen' from our lexicon in 2021. Let's just say the patient has not had prior abdominal surgery. Gendered language needs to go. Thanks! #MedTwitter#WomenInSTEM
Finishing up a rough 24 hrs where being a daughter/caregiver came 1st, surgeon/faculty 2nd. We need to support colleagues to be able to triage that way any day. Dad flew through better than I did. Exhausted but thankful for @UCSFSurgery. #MedTwitter
You can do anything but not everything. The triple threat is extinct or never existed. Find your joy and pursue it with limitless courage. And then surround yourself with colleagues who have complementary skills and interests. #MedTwitter#AcademicChatter
Today was a very sad day for @UCSFSurgery and @UCSF with the loss of our colleague, friend and rising @UCSFGSResidency chief resident, Evan Werlin. His passion for surgery and joy of life (and cats!) will buoy us and reinforce our mission to serve.
Today was a sad day for all the members of @ucsf, @UCSFSurgery, @UCSFMedicine. We lost a beloved surgical resident. Evan was a brilliant rising star in our department. He was bright, gifted, hilarious, & skilled surgeon. The world is less without him. He will be missed. #RIP.
And we present the next President of the San Francisco Surgical Society, our very own @TraumaDocSF from @UCSFSurgery and @ZSFGCare. Congrats Andre!
Getting our new @UCSFSurgery home ready for the new year: It’s been decades in the making, and we look forward to welcoming colleagues & visitors in 2022! With @lummy21. #medtwitter#match2022
I’m so sorry to learn of this exchange. As much progress as has been made there is clearly so much opportunity to modernize our culture together based on mutual respect. The story you tell is one that I have experienced myself WAY too many times. Onward, together.
No bandaid, no vaccine, no appointment, yet. But that’s ok! @UCSF lottery system allows colleagues to move forward fairly. Leading from behind, masked and distanced, patiently.
‘Don’t hire for culture fit; hire for respectful dissent.’ The old adage of ‘who would I want to go out and have a coffee/beer with’ is a litmus test for group think. A relevant read as we go into into residency interview season!
Mentorship can (should!) last a lifetime. So proud of @heatheryeomd - who I met 20 yrs ago (😳) and now is a co-PI, @UCSFSurgery visiting professor & always friend…who apparently also dresses up a little better🤔! #MedTwitter
With female chairs, gender gaps in publication/tenure & the #GenderPayGap shrink. Bottom line: 'managers from different backgrounds take different approaches, highlighting the value of #diversity among decision-makers.' Making a difference as a 'middle manager'! @WomenSurgeons
Reflections on unconscious bias. As I speak w/ students, many say they’re ‘surprised’ to like - love! - surgery & the OR. Their surprise comes from preconceptions, stereotypes, & yes, implicit bias based on history, media, myth. Let’s stamp out bias! #ILoveBeingASurgeon
Of the *4,032* Professors of Surgery
*11* are Hispanic/Latina women &
*15* are Black women
Individually these round to 0% & together they add to 0.6%!?
It’s time to change up the system
Incredibly proud of @KMarieMD being appointed Chair of Surgery at Albany Medical Center. She is the First Black Female Surgery Chair (Academic). Thanks for shattering this ceiling & representing many of us who until now have not seen ourselves reflected in Surgical Leadership!
A giant of American surgery & father of modern #trauma care - F William Blaisdell (1927-2020) - passed away today. He was a pillar of @UCSFSurgery, serving as Chief at San Francisco General Hospital, & Chair of @UCDavisSurgery. @AmCollSurgeons@traumadoctors
Since #MedBikini, I’ve received multiple inquiries from #LGBTQ students going into surgery concerned about their applications. My #allyship & advice: Be your authentic self. It’s the only way to live life & know if you/your program will be a good match. @OutSurgeons#diversity
In academic medicine the pathway to promotion is key. However there is NO 'best' track, except the track that is 'best' for YOU. Scientist, scholar, educator, clinician; all are essential to create the most diverse community. #MedTwitter#AcademicTwitter#AcademicChatter
Two faculty candidates - both women - lost because they are primary caretakers of elderly parents who they can’t move. As an only child with aged parents, I get it. We don’t talk enough about end of life challenges. #MedTwitter#WomenInSTEM@WomenSurgeons#elderlycare
What an #OpeningDay! @PheoSurgeon sang the national anthem & knocked it out of the park! Great to see @UCSF & @UCSFHospitals health care workers celebrated & yes, surgeons can be scientists AND artists! Oh, & the @SFGiants won! #MedTwitter
'As of today, nowhere in the United States is it legal to fire someone for being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. That’s a big deal.' For me and so many others. For all of us.
News Analysis: LGBT rights leaders were stunned Monday when 2 conservative justices sided with the majority in one of the most sweeping gay rights decisions by the Supreme Court so far, write Adam Nagourney and Jeremy Peters nyti.ms/2YFW5fZ
What is an exciting weeknight for a Surgery Department Chair? The night before announcing the recruitment of a new @UCSFSurgery faculty member to help lead transformation at @UCSFHospitals@UCSF. And she is terrific. #MedTwitter#ILookLikeASurgeon
In 2021, I find greatest peace in the OR, where the team and patient are aligned around goals, there is good music or silence, and the chaos of life is sealed away for a few precious hours. Am I the only one? #MedTwitter
The highlight of Monday night football tonight is not just the @49ers; I’ll go with our very own trauma surgeon Dr Kornblith for the win! Congrats @LucyKornblith! #MedTwitter
Kicking off the American Surgical Association meeting with our President @DianaFarmerMD and most distinguished - and inspiring! - colleagues and friends. #ASA2023#WomenInSTEM#MedTwitter
Note to nay-sayers who allege U can't be a surgeon AND scientist: Please curb your implicit biases & stereotypes. Just because you don't know any doesn't mean there aren't any. It just means you don't know any. Thxs on behalf of our learners! #MedTwitter#MedEd@AcademicSurgery
For intern applicants: A personal statement is just that. Tell us about you, your life experiences & your passion for medicine/surgery. Patient stories are interesting but we are interviewing YOU. What is your truth? #medtwitter#MedStudentTwitter#Match2022@UCSFMedicine
Today I celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth at @OhioSt9ateSurg by honoring my Dad, who's 94 & bringing the same determination & courage to life that he brought to cardiology for more than half a century. Here's to ⬆️ inclusivity in medicine. @LatinoSurgery@lmsa@UCSFSurgery
I can't believe I have to go to the operating room for the next several hours. Of all the times on all the days! On my playlist: Peaches by The Presidents of the US, The Devil Went Down to #Georgia & Springsteen. #MedTwitter
Never let a shadowing experience pass you by! Today I learned a 'Day in the Life of a Surgeon' yrs ago started a pipeline that graduated a young woman who just matched in general surgery residency. #Mentorship#MedTwitter#MedStudentTwitter
Academic institutions must make major changes to stop sexual harassment in the sciences and medicine, says a big new report. It says their training programs have failed & they're too concerned with "avoiding liability..not on preventing sexual harassment." nyti.ms/2t5TFbO
As I become more senior (sigh), I see more (not less) #gender inequity & bias. Is it that I am wiser & see better or that stakes have increased & there is more perceived to be potentially lost by those with privilege? Or both. #MotivatedNotCynical#medtwitter
A plea: Remember (take the time!) to celebrate #mentors, sponsors & colleagues from the past who made a difference in your career. They might not even realize the impact they had but they’ll be thankful/over the 🌙 to hear from you! #MedTwitter#BetterThanAnRVU#AcademicTwitter
