Wild night of northern lights in Rochester last night! It went on all night non-stop. I pulled another all-nighter, and just ran out to grab the sunrise. Time for bed!
You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the Genesee River Zone!
Awesome find today in the Adirondacks, well off the beaten path. I've seen this Chapel before, but never quite like this. How would you like to take a walk down this aisle?
Wild night of lightning last night! One of the best I've seen - it was like shooting fish in a barrel. This is a composite image of many of those strikes put together. I've been up all night and I am bushed right now. Time for bed!
Big mystery! The owners of a Kodak Park bldg. knocked down a wall and found this tile mosaic mural - and no one knows what it means or why it's there. Ancient aliens perhaps? Portal to another dimension? My friend has worked there for 44 years and no one has a clue. Do you?
Did you know there's a mini-Letchworth in the City of Rochester? And it is stunning right now. It's called the lower Genesee River Gorge. And it begins at Rochester's lower falls near Maplewood Park - which have an uncanny similarity to Letchworth's middle falls.
And now for something completely different... Sugar Creek Farms in Ossian NY, just outside of Dansville. If I had teamed up with Vincent Van Gogh, this is what it might have looked like:-)
MIND TOTALLY BLOWN. I was up all night. My first emotion this morning is I'm happy that so many people finally got to see the aurora. People have been messaging me for years for advice on how to see them. And last night, their wish came true. It was truly one for the ages.
So quiet in Letchworth State Park last night. I had the whole place to myself. This was the view from Inspiration Point (click the image to see the entire vertical shot)
Good morning! Here is your color update from the Adirondacks as of yesterday afternoon. Driving along Rt. 30 heading south along Tupper Lake was spectacular - overlooking Rock Island Bay.
It's been exactly 63 years since my Dad took this portrait of Walt Disney at the University Club on East Avenue in Rochester - called the best portrait ever captured of him by Disney executives - still in use today at Disney facilities around the world.
Sleepy Hollow Farm in Woodstock Vermont, one of the most photographed farms in the world. I went three times this week at the crack of dawn and the third time was the charm.
Lake Ontario finally 'turned over' and the water has been super clear. I've been waiting for this to go snorkeling in some of my favorite spots including the Laura Grace shipwreck and this rock which is lurking unmarked just under the surface in one of the busiest boating lanes.
The eclipse might have fizzled out yesterday, but Lake Ontario didn't disappoint last night. In a rare event, Canadian city lights became visible across the lake in a phenomenon called a superior mirage, or Fata Morgana - the same type of mirage which led to the Titanic disaster.
It's difficult to get a fall foliage shot in Watkin's Glen because it's... in a gorge 📷 But on this particular day, some wet leaves had fallen into the gorge and made a nice foreground and leading line into the photo. So I grabbed it.
Little bit of color over Lake Ontario right now - and a clear view of the Big Dipper. Problem is, winds are gusting to 40 mph right now - feels like a hurricane out there.
This is what the Genesee River looks like as it passes through the City of Rochester before cascading down two major waterfalls and into Lake Ontario. This was taken last night as the city was all decked out in green for St. Patty's day.
The weather gods weren't satisfied with giving us one of the best Aurora displays ever, so they provided this awesome waterspout over Lake Ontario moments ago.
So glad I took a wrong turn last night on my way home from the Naples/Bristol area - and wound up in Honeoye Falls as a result (vertical shot, click to expand).
Absolute perfection. This photo is so beautiful, I had to share. It was taken by one of my students, Thomas Kosmicki in a local Rochester park and posted to the Montanus Photography Classroom Facebook Group. Visit his FB page to check out all of his work - it's stunning!
A morning drive through the Keene Valley is beautiful. The Town of Keene includes 15 of the 46 High Peaks, including Mount Marcy, New York's highest mountain, and the rest of the Great Range.

Good morning from the shores of Lake Ontario and Rochester New York. The sun only popped out for about three minutes this morning long enough for me to get this shot.
Glorious day in the Finger Lakes for some late fall foliage. Much of it is past peak, but still beautiful
especially around the south end of Canandaigua Lake where trees are holding onto their color. We are truly blessed to live in such a unique and beautiful part of the world.
The Genesee River Gorge in Rochester is on fire right now! It was just stunning yesterday. You can access it from Maplewood Park, the walk bridge at Seneca Park, Turning Point Park, Genesee Riverway Trail and you can even walk over the Veterans Memorial bridge for a stunning view
The color is popping in the Adirondacks. Get up here if you can! Here is a color survey from yesterday. This includes Big Moose, 7th Lake and Limekiln Lake.
We also hiked Sis and Bubb Lakes and Moss Lake and they are peaking as well. Heading to Lake Placid today.
Good morning. It's a busy morning along the Lake Ontario shoreline. The 460 ft. McKeil Spirit ship is on it's way into port and flocks of birds are everywhere.
Highland Park in Rochester at midnight last night... This is why I love night photography so much, it was so still and peaceful and cold and crisp up there. A sensory experience that took me away from the cares of the world - if for only a few moments.
Wandering around Highland Park all alone at 2 am with the full moon blazing down was a zen-like experience. Like a Walt Whitman poem where I was truly living in the moment, I had an acute sensory awareness of the beauty all around me. Can't wait to go back.
Your latest color update from the Adirondacks: The color is definitely at peak in the Lake Placid region right now. There is still so much beauty to be found here even on a rainy day. We drove from Rt. 86 towards Whiteface, which has stunning river and mountain views all the way.
I caught a little sliver of the northern lights last night over the lake. Not much of a display, but still exciting to see. Did anyone else catch it? The faint lights along the horizon are from Canadian towns.
Color update from the southern end of Canandaigua Lake and Bristol Mountain yesterday at dusk. The color is starting to come on. And if the leaves don't blow down in this wind today, peak color should hit during the forecasted nice stretch of weather coming up next week.
