Ideally life should feel like Animal Crossing. You’re hanging out. Going to the beach. Eating fresh fruit. You’re a little in a hole financially but it’s fine,
“PLEASE stop focusing on the Zodiac killer and have sex with me, your wife Chloë Sevigny, looking like the hottest woman of the 70s”
“Ooh I just love my little puzzles 🙂”
I think the one bit in Regular Show where Rigby demands a waiter bring him a dozen egg omelette and then it immediately smash cuts to an ambulance driving really fast with sirens taught me more about the power of editing than Godard’s Breathless
Josh Brolin seems like a nice, cool, and fun guy.
I’m so scared of him. I would freak out if he looked at me. If he got angry in the same building as me I would run home. Why is this
Fun beat for me in Dune: Part Two where amidst discussion of symbolic power and legend and fanaticism, Gurney Halleck is like, “yeah that’s cool but like we have nukes. like real tangible nukes.”
Adult men silently eat their breakfast (heart-healthy breakfast cereal, possibly orange juice) like Michael Shannon in a detective movie. Staring. Thinking about mistakes.
I think the Shelley Duvall Archives account did a wonderful thing by not just helping correct a lot of urban legends and myths about Shelley Duvall’s life, but sharing people’s contemporary praise of her career w/ her.
More than that, she was her friend. We all need friends.
And we’ll be doing Matrix again, folks. Just in time for Christmas. Everyone’s gonna be there, you saw. Neo. Trinity, Jerome - the whole, all of the Matrix.
I don’t respect David Lynch for escorting a heightened surrealism into the popular American imagination, I respect him because he’s an absolute player with dynamo haircuts that the ladies can’t get enough of.
The Dark Knight is the most Reddit Batman movie because it spends like thirty minutes randomly getting involved in Hong Kong before moving onto something more interesting (the Joker)
Feels like a very tender depiction of that transition between life and death, one that mostly comes from age and the built-up emotional atmosphere that death, both natural and violent, creates in one’s life.
STELLAN SKARSGARD: Calm, kindness, kinship, love. I’ve given up all chance at inner peace. I’ve made my mind a sunless space. I share my dreams with ghosts. I burn my decency for someone else’s future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see.
SOMEWHERE ELSE:
The Criterion edition of Eyes Wide Shut will feature a new, definitive mix & master - entirely approved by the technicians who worked alongside Stanley Kubrick. It will also include many added CGI X-Wing starfighters, approved by me.
One Battle After Another might be the best movie released by a major American studio since I started working as a critic (~2010). distressing how little else comes to mind!
