Anyway the point is we change what is socially good all the time, but what stays static is that women are not socially good.
Anyway, buy my book please, because I am tired of these takes. Thank you.

If you are feeling sad and hopeless that is completely understandable, but it's also a luxury we can't afford right now. Here's a list of some great organisations helping on the ground, just as a handy guide:
Fun fact: residents in the "affordable" flats in these blocks are not allowed to use the Sky Pool, even if they pay. They just have to watch the rich people from their windows. Also the "affordable" flats still cost about 750k.
Swimmers enjoy warm weather in London at the Sky Pool which is believed to be the world’s first transparent pool built between two skyscrapers

I am the god damn plague/Renaissance police and I will be issuing citations anytime I see these takes on the TL. No. Absolutely not. I rebuke all of this.
A sad fact is that what the neoliberal consensus promised was cheap consumer items. The boomers and Gen X traded job safety, high pay, and affordable housing in return for treats. Now the secure people who benefitted from it tell the young that they can't have the treats either.
Fun fact about what happened pre-modern medicine when women gave birth at home organically in a process 'unmediated by chemical or surgical help' - birth was very much associated with 'dread and pain' because WOMEN AND BABIES JUST DIED CONSTANTLY, JANE.
everything about birthing culture is wrong.
babies should be had at home in beds and baths, not fluorescent hospital rooms.
the process should be organic, unmediated by chemical or surgical help and unassociated with the dread and pain it often is today.
Lately I’ve stopped asking people “how are you?” and “are you ok?” and started asking them, “Do you know that the term 'Dark Ages' is a reference to a lack of sources, not a societal decline?"
A friend of mine has alerted me to this cat who lives in Cambridge, next door to a pet store. Every day he apparently breaks in, sleeps in the beds, and then plays with the toys. These pictures were taken on different days.
As a medieval historian I am afraid I am going to have to remind divorced twitter once again that Magna Carta does not refer to "the people". It refers to the nobility, which your local pub is very sadly not.
I beg of you to read a history book ever, but off the top of my head : The Maori, the Vietnamese, every native American nation, the Palestinians, the Irish, the Afghans, pretty much every Nazi occupied country during WWII...the list goes on and this is offensive and ignorant.
Therapist: The uncovered face of the Lamb of God in the Ghent Altarpiece isn't real. It can't hurt you.
The uncovered face of the Lamb of God in the Ghent Altarpiece:
This morning my cat woke up, sang a little song, ate her breakfast, and then immediately put herself back to bed in the cupboard over the door. I have never been so jealous of any living being in my life.
No, I am sorry. I don't care if you are a "history buff" you do not, under any circumstances get to make pronouncements about Nazi collaborators based off of a wikipedia article and girlboss vibes.
Here are some excerpts from Kelly Ricciardi Colvin's Gender and French Identity:
To help celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III this weekend, we'll be giving out a limited number of scones onboard our services to London to First Class passengers tomorrow and Friday 🇬🇧
The question is - do you put jam or cream on first?
Is there not a world in which one can be supportive of the transgender community and curious about the fairness of Trans athletes in sport yet not be labeled a transphobe or a bigot as we ask questions? Do we yet know the answers? And do we even want to know the answers?
I mean my PhD meant I had to speak five languages but I guess I was just fucking around. I am sure your "hubs" could just pop down to the Národní knihovna and read the 14th century Latin scripts and have a conversation in Czech with the conservators about where else to look. Easy
Hi I am a historian with a popular platform. No one running in the American election comes even close to a Bolshevik. In Europe the furthest left American presidential candidate would be considered centre left. Hope you calm down and read a book.
I sure wish there were some historians with popular platforms who could tell us that old school Bolsheviks always promise Utopia before delivering gulags.
It is a matter of fact that the Nazis were fascists. Denying it is a soft form of holocaust denial, and I invite you to argue with the Holocaust Memorial Museum about it. This is beneath you.
.@goingmedieval. Look, I know that you disagree with me. I, likewise, disagree with you. But the Nazis were left-wing racists. They were wholly able to collaborate on friendly terms with similar monsters, such as Stalin's Communists, and combined with them to oppose freedom, law and demcracy. If this upsets you, then think harder about it. But don't tell me what to think.
The Roma refer to the Holocaust as "the Devouring" because of how many were killed. The UK just elected a party that had pogroms against the Roma and travellers as a part of its manifesto. Never again is right now.
Well, well, well, if it isn't the incredibly new idea of women's sexuality that I cover extensively in my upcoming book one more time, and I have time to self promote, so let's talk about why Stephen Fry is wrong, cuz a girl has books to sell.
My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen. His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called off the wedding. So just pray on it & make sure you’re comfortable with ur decision, not bullied
So yeah this is fascist ahistorical nonsense but I am on an airport so I have time to talk about why. First off let's acknowledge that it is a fasc technique to blame the issues of capitalism on feminism. The trouble isn't a failing system it is those pesky girls!!!
In the second place - acting as though medieval people didn't value their lives is just so ignorant and patronising. They did value their lives enough to flagellate themselves in the goddamn street to try to stop the plague. But sure. Whatever some Victorian told you, I guess.
John Ruskin -the Victorian art critic- rejected his wife Effie Grey because, in her words "he had imagined women were quite different to what he saw I was, and that the reason he did not make me his Wife was because he was disgusted with my person the first evening". Same vibes.
This guy: "viking" culture means people don't feed their guests.
Every Icelandic saga: twenty stories about how if your hospitality isn't good enough the revenant dead will come to rip your arms off and steal your cattle.
Blair, a person who is my partner, and has read everything I have ever written, just turned to me and said, "What about whatshername, you know, Bingledorf?" He was referring to Hildegard of Bingen.
The worst thing is I knew who he was talking about.
No!! Jesus christ! Stop! That arose as a result of the social conditions created by the Black Death and was only possible because of wide scale civil unrest.
Sometimes people wonder why I wrote an entire book chapter about how medieval people are ass men, and the answer is because conservative weirdos think that a marked interest in boobs is a both a moral and historical position.
In the first place - shut UP about the Renaissance. Vasari has swindled your ass. It is just not the thing you think it is.

Let the record show that today was the day that I got so annoyed by myths about medieval people not bathing that I wrote you a whole damn blog about it. Now never say this to me again.

So as someone who teaches at one of the elite universities everyone is always saying students should be aiming for, I want to talk about how this take is wrong, disingenuous, and displays a shallow understanding of class.
This is a great object lesson in how you get a theoretical "Dark Ages". If we have lost half of all films from just a hundred years ago when our society does have an emphasis on preservation, why are you surprised that we don't have a tonne of documents from 1200 years ago?
“Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation said that basically half of all American films made before 1950 are lost, & none of the major distributors are looking for them. Even worse, they said that more than 90% of films made before 1929 are lost forever.”

Absolutely exhausting to be a woman and get told, in all seriousness, that if you don't want to get killed maybe you should just not leave your house alone in the year of our lord 2021. Maybe we should be working on telling people they can't just kill women? IDK just a thought.
Me writing: You terrible goblin words. I despise you. Get out of my cursed brain and onto this page now. Why did I choose this life??
Me editing: Oh my precious mind children, beautiful before all else. I can sacrifice none of you, for you are a reflection of my noble artistry.
Absolutely incredible how when you are a professional historian people just come to you, unbidden, to say that slavery was actually totally fine because no one knew any better. Very interesting that enslaved people simply do not count as people. Wonder why that is.
The FBI has a plant in like every local environmentalist group who organises freeway cleanup. When the fascists storm government buildings they know nothing about them. There is no acceptable answer to why this is the case.
I know everyone else has said it already but £81k a year is an amount of money that I struggle to even understand. It is just such an incredible salary, but the people who hold the reigns of power as well as control cultural output are here to tell us it's nothing. It's insulting
Churches across Britain support their community, providing a sense of unity and hope, particularly when times are tough.
At this time of optimism and new beginnings, I thank them for everything they do, and wish you all a very Happy Easter.
"What do peacocks look like?"
"Like a blue cock and balls, but with with a fan at the back."
"Well yeah, but I mean temperamentally."
"Oh furious as hell. Just ready to start shit immediately."
"Great, thanks."
First the idea that women working outside the home is new is laughable and extremely modern. Women have *always* worked. The idea that women are exclusively domestic was a very short lived middle class only idea which emerged in the enlightenment and peaked with Fordism.
"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."
I know I should ignore the bad take machine, but ideas like this are so frustrating because they are so bourgeois. Jobs that entail manual labour should not be extended into old age. You can only have a take like this if you don't know working class people.
I'm sure I'm opening a giant can of worms here, but uh it seems fine to raise the retirement age very slightly in nations where populations are healthier and living longer?
Confidential to the landlord shaggers in my mentions: you aren't smart, funny, or shaggable, and your defense of stuff like this is why no one invites you to the pub. xxx
During the Black Death up to 60% of the population in major urban centres such as Florence died. Whole villages collapsed and rewilding occured because we didn't have the population to support cultivation. 25% of the Earth's population died. But I am sure it was fine.

It is absolutely fascinating how non-historians who have probably never read a book on the 15th century in their life, let alone read a primary source from it, really believe that everyone was totally fine with rape and genocide and that it is the historians who have it wrong.
Just a reminder that the reason that using Sci Hub doesn't lose authors money is because academics aren't paid to publish our work. A very normal system where we write stuff for free and then it is aggressively hidden behind a pay wall, lest anyone ever read it and learn.
How on earth would this work? Is there going to be a security guard on every toilet door checking ID/the contents of everyone's pants? Or is purely designed to make a certain group of people feel unsafe, unwelcome and unwanted in society
I have no idea why some non-historians are so desperate to rehabilitate a Nazi collaborator, but it is unhelpful, pathetic, and honestly you are showing your ass here. You need to sit down and read some honest to god books as opposed to trying to tumblr uplift this woman.
