I write about ๐ Recruiting Simplified & ๐ Players for @TexasHoopsGASO. Hundreds of players and college coaches follow. ๐ฒ @KlutchShotsAi Advisor.
Went to a college practice this morning.
๐ I have 3 takeaways
๐ Pace - Coaches teach things once. If you aren't paying attention you are in trouble.
๐ขCommunication - Everyone talks. All the time.
๐ง Decision Making - Making the right play is a premium skill.
Playing college basketball is very difficult.
About 3.5% of HS Players will play in college.
Here are 6 quotes from Current College Coaches to help you become one of the 3.5%.

๐คจ โWhat is 1 thing that will make you ๐ STOP recruiting a player at the TABC Showcase?โ
โI asked 5 coaches from different levels this exact question.
Answers Below ๐
๐ Loser Qualities
โToo much dribbling. Not going hard. Poor body language and negative interactions with your teammates and coaches.โ
- Division 1
๐ฉ Careless
โWhen players are careless with the basketball, there are some turnovers that are out of a good idea or being aggressive, but consistent turnovers and careless play are a big red flag to us.โ
- Division 2
๐คท Bad Body Language
โNegative body language will cause us to stop recruiting players at TABC. Everyone plays poorly sometimes, but your body language has to stay strong all the time.โ
- Division 3
๐คฉ Spotlighters
โWe arenโt looking for guys that are about themselves. On average you only have the ball in your hands for 2 minutes, if scoring is all you care about that then that is something that doesnโt translate to an everyday guy at the collegiate level for winning programs.โ
- JUCO
๐ช Not Going Hard
โGuys who donโt play hard. Playing hard is a given at the college level. If you take plays off, thatโs the quickest way to get cut from our list.โ
- NAIA
Offers are hard to come by.
Most players will never receive one.
Here are 6 Quotes from college coaches that will move you one step closer to being offered.

Self-awareness and execution.
โIf youโre a shooter, make shots. If youโre a defender, lock up. If youโre a playmaker, get paint touches. If youโre a rebounder, create extra possessions. Be relentless in whoever you truly are. Not who you want to be.โ

โผ๏ธ 3 Hard Truths High School Players Need to Understand Before They Step on a College Campus to Play Basketball.
"Why would I recruit a high schooler, if I can recruit a guy who already knows what it's like to be a college basketball player?" -Anonymous College Coach
โฐ Time Management
The day you step on campus you will be ruled by a schedule.
โข School - Class // Homework // Studying
โข Basketball - Workouts // Lifts // Film
โข Social - Friends // Family
It is your job to allot enough time for each activity. If you don't you are going to be behind in something...
๐๏ธ Urgency in Everything
"Urgency is a Combination of Focus and Execution"
I was at a college practice recently, and the coach taught the starters a set play. An hour later, he asked the backups to execute it. Ask yourself, am I that locked in at practice?
๐ฃ๏ธ You're Replaceable
If you aren't getting better, you are getting passed.
You aren't just competing with your class anymore, you are competing with three classes above you and three classes below you. With the portal readily available to college coaches, they can move on from you, just like you can move on from them.
How are you contagious?
โEverything is contagious. Attitude is contagious. Physicality is contagious. Making shots is contagious. What are you personally spreading to your team thatโs making a positive (or negative) impact?โ
-Division 2 Coach
There are millions of free basketball resources on twitter.
Just because theyโre available doesnโt mean theyโre helpful.
Here are 6 that are worth your time.
๐งตโฌ๏ธ
Are you consistent?
โI really look for guys who play hard and are vocal throughout the day, especially with the multiple games in a day, can they bring the same level of effort consistently?โ
-Division 3 Coach
5 Unsigned Seniors that should be on college coaches' radars.

โข DeBrion Broomfield - Spring Westfield
โข Crew Flowers - Southwest Christian
โข Eric Woods - Aldine Nimitz

โข HS Coaches Name & Number
3 Factors College Coaches consider when recruiting players.
โข Controllables
โข Skills
โข Genetics
Letโs break them down.
--
Controllables
Controllables are things that are in your complete control on and off the court.
โข Grades
โข Playing Hard
โข Attitude
โข Relationships with team/coach
โข Response to Adversity
โข Toughness
โข Weight Room
โข Execution
--
Skills
Skills are the things you excel at on the court and can continue to improve upon.
Prioritize the right ones.
โข Shooting
โข Dribbling
โข Passing
โข Basketball IQ
--
Genetics
Genetics is what you were physically born with.
โข Height
โข Length
โข Athleticism
โข Speed
Unfortunately, this part isnโt fair.
So find a way to maximize your Controllables and Skills to give yourself the best chance possible.

When you claim to be a "Point Guard," you are setting an expectation of who you are in your highlights.
The plays in your highlights should match the position you claim to be.
Way too many players miss this.

@MrAletan (2023) was an absolute monster last weekend at state, and his rim protection performance was obviously one of legend (7 Blocks - 6A State Record), but it was another stat of his that caught my eye.
Samson had a 1.47 Point Per Possession, which is how many points you scored relative to how many times you had the ball. This means it was very likely that Lake Highlands scored a bucket every time Samson touched the ball. The pressure he put on BU with his activity around the rim and his rim-running ability cannot be overstated and might have had the biggest impact on why @LHWildcatHoops holds the 6A Trophy.
