without getting too specific, Eggers' film deliberately avoids such contemporary and over-worn vampiric tropes in favor of a portrayal that's rooted in folklore and the occult. it's much more interesting (and scary) than yet another movie about a creature doomed to loneliness
Lily-Rose Depp was shockingly good in Nosferatu. That kind of acting is not easy. I did really enjoy it. The film was aesthetically immaculate. But I believe Eggers made a mistake in how he portrayed Nosferatu. To me the essence of any great vampire story is that we must have some pity for them. Immortality is a lonely curse, and they live devoid of love. We should have had some empathy for Count Orlok. To see how tortured he is, how jealous of real love. This vampire was one dimensionally evil so I never truly cared. Perhaps if Kinski’s mesmerizing performance had not been forever etched in my mind, I would have enjoyed it more.
