Official Account of the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster @rcwestminster & President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales @catholicew
If the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) bill is passed, it would be the biggest change that this country has seen for many decades, on the back of less than seven hours debate. In comparison, the fox hunting bill endured hundreds of hours of debate.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has a personal fight on his hands against the vicious #coronavirus and needs our prayers. Let us #pray for him, all who are suffering and our NHS workers caring for them.
I have written to the Prime Minister to express profound concern over her call for a review of the location of the British Embassy to the State of Israel, with the suggestion that it might be moved away from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Privileged to be taking part in the Coronation of King Charles III tomorrow. I'll be standing together with the Archbishop of Canterbury and other Christian leaders to invoke God's blessing on His Majesty the King. bit.ly/3VzR1XD#Coronation
I am saddened to learn that King Charles is now facing a time of treatment for cancer.
On behalf of the entire Catholic Community in England and Wales, I offer His Majesty our warmest wishes and assurance of steadfast prayers for his full and speedy recovery. God bless the King.
At this moment of sadness and loss I pray for the repose of the soul of Prince Philip, Her Majesty the Queen’s faithful and loyal husband. I pray for the Queen and all of the Royal Family.
I was shocked and saddened to learn of the killing of Sir David Amess MP, while serving his constituents and country. I pray for the repose of his soul, and for his family and constituents who grieve for him. May he rest in peace.
I am concerned to hear the news about the Her Majesty The Queen's health. I offer my prayers for her and her family. May the blessings of the Lord strengthen and comfort her and her family.
Earlier today I was privileged to be part of an Audience with King Charles. In my conversation with him, I assured him that Catholics had continued in heartfelt prayer for his mother. He expressed his gratitude and asked me to ensure that Catholics know of his thanks & gratitude.
I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Benedict. He will be remembered as one of the great theologians of the 20th century.
I remember with particular affection the remarkable Papal Visit to these lands in 2010.
The right to die can quickly become a duty to die, and that is why I urge all Catholics to pray and write to their MPs. Life is a gift from our Creator and when we forget God, we end up belittling the human person.

I condemn this appalling strike on the Holy Family Church in Gaza, pray for the dead and injured, and stand in solidarity with Fr Gabriel Romanelli and the people sheltering in the compound - Christians and Muslims alike. rcdow.org.uk/cardinal/news/c…
I have received with sadness the news today of the death of Her Royal Highness, Katharine, The Duchess of Kent. I recall with fondness her presence in our community, especially her participation in the pilgrimage to Lourdes, as well as her lifetime of public service.
Ahead of the third reading on Friday, I wish to call attention to the fact that the future of many care homes and hospices will be put in grave doubt if the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill becomes law. rcdow.org.uk/news/future-of-…
I am delighted King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit the Holy See and meet Pope Francis during this Jubilee Year when so many will gather in Rome as pilgrims of hope. It presents a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the close relationship between the UK and the Holy See.
We are heartbroken in our loss at death of Her Majesty The Queen.
Even in sorrow, I am filled with an immense sense of gratitude for the gift to the world that has been the life of Queen Elizabeth II. We pray for the repose of the soul of Her Majesty bit.ly/3cWTJog
The vote in the House of Commons in favour of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is a watershed moment in the history of our country. It fundamentally changes society’s long held values and relationships on matters of life and death.
As Parliament considers legalising assisted suicide, we as Catholics oppose this change on principle. Every human life is sacred, bearing God-given dignity. This Bill elevates individual autonomy at the cost of that shared truth. rcdow.org.uk/cardinal/news/a…
Please join me in prayer today for the dignity of human life. In particular our focus is on the end of life and that assisted suicide will not become law in our lands. May God bless us all, especially those who make our laws, with courage to embrace and uphold a culture of life.
I will join the Holy Father in consecrating #Russia and #Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the Solemnity of the Annunciation, 25 March. Please join me for the 5.30pm Mass and Act of Consecration at Westminster Cathedral.
Please pray for the soul of Cardinal George Pell. A lover of cricket and England except when playing against Australia. He bore his wrongful imprisonment without bitterness. I enjoyed his company in Rome just last week. May he rest in peace.
The death of Pope Francis brings great sadness to so many around the world, both in the Catholic Church and in societies in general. A voice proclaiming the innate dignity of every human being, especially those who are poor or marginalised, is now silent.

May God bless Poland. May the Polish people always be welcomed here in this country, and thanked for the contribution you make to our society and Catholic life. #PL100
Pope Francis and the leaders of churches in the Holy Land have long called for the international Status Quo on Jerusalem to be upheld, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. The city must be shared as a common patrimony, never becoming an exclusive monopoly of any party.
1/3 The call 'Get vaccinated! Get boosted!' is more and more pressing. The need is more urgent, especially in London. I add my voice to many others:
To the voice of #PopeFrancis who says to be vaccinated is 'an act of love'.
It is a great joy to see our churches open once again for individual prayer and to be in the sacramental presence of the Lord. It was good to pray with @JustinWelby in @WestminsterCath and @wabbey to mark this moment of grace.
I am delighted and thrilled that Pope Leo has today announced that he will declare St John Henry Newman to be a 'Doctor of the Church'.
rcdow.org.uk/cardinal/news/c…
I am delighted that our churches may open again for individual prayer from 15 June. It is a great blessing that church doors will again be open to all who long to pray there for the peace and grace we need today. bit.ly/2Ad3pHZ
I mourn the death of Jonathan Sacks. I express my sorrow to the worldwide Jewish community on the loss of this great figure. I assure them of my prayers & condolences. I have lost a friend; the Jewish community a great leader; humanity an eloquent spokesman. May he rest in peace.
Such a relocation of the UK Embassy would be seriously damaging to any possibility of lasting peace in the region and to the international reputation of the United Kingdom.
I salute the courage of the Princess of Wales in speaking so openly about her personal health. Not only does she give encouragement to all who carry the burden of ill health, but she also speaks so movingly of the importance of her family life.
I can see no valid reason why a move needs now to be considered. I ask the Prime Minister earnestly to reconsider the intention she has expressed and to focus all efforts on seeking a two-state solution, in which Jerusalem would have a guaranteed special status.
This week's announcements by the PM that some indoor sales premises can open Monday and most shops on 15 June, questions directly the reasons why our churches remain closed. It is now time to move to the phased opening of our churches.

Our moral obligation is to welcome the stranger. This is not simply about how many #Afghan refugees are allowed to enter this country. The response must be a welcome, and a welcome is not something a government alone can create, it's up to everybody.
I am heartbroken at the information provided by Cardinal Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, of killings in the Church compound of the Catholic Parish of the Holy Family in Gaza City.

Today the Nuncio and I joined His Majesty The King in Windsor for the blessing of a Cedar of Lebanon given to Queen Elizabeth II last year by Pope Francis on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee.

On this Solemnity of the Ascension, I was pleased to welcome our new Nuncio, Archbishop Maury Buendía before he presented his credentials to King Charles III.
This evening at 5.30pm, I will celebrate a Mass of welcome for him with many of my brother Bishops at @WestminsterCath.
The shock at the #NotreDameCathedral fire is spreading round the world. It is an iconic building visited by millions but more importantly is a symbol of faith which is at the heart of Europe. We pray the fire is extinguished quickly & with a shared effort the building made good.
On behalf of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, I welcome the news of the appointment of Bishop Sarah Mullally as the next Archbishop of Canterbury. She will bring many personal gifts and experience to her new role.

First dose of the Covid-19 vaccine yesterday! Such a kind and cheerful experience. I strongly encourage everyone to take the vaccine. Let's play our part and support NHS staff as they fight to save so many lives.
On behalf of the Catholic community of England and Wales, I congratulate @Keir_Starmer on his victory in yesterday's general election. I assure him of my good wishes as he takes up his new responsibilities in forming and leading a government.
This Wednesday a bill will be introduced to Parliament proposing a change in the law to permit assisted suicide. As this debate unfolds, I ask you to play your part in it. Write to your MP. Have discussions with family, friends and colleagues. And pray.
rcdow.org.uk/cardinal/news/c…
#PopeFrancis has asked that we mark Ash Wednesday as a Day of Fasting for Peace. I ask that we all heed our Holy Father’s call, and devote ourselves to prayer and fasting on Ash Wednesday, especially for the intention of #PeaceInUkraine
As we gather over these coming days, I think we have one duty. We owe it to Her Majesty The Queen to pray for her. May our merciful Father welcome her home, and unite her again with her beloved husband, Prince Philip. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen.
Public worship is essential, should be classed by government as necessary and supported to continue. We call on HMG to recognise and support this and enable us to continue to worship safely, as part of the essential fabric of the nation.

Praying for His Majesty King Charles in the Chapel Royal yesterday evening, ahead of his Coronation on Saturday. A simple but profound vigil of prayer with our Christian brothers and sisters. 🙏
In the light of the current critical situation in the Holy Land, I ask all people, very simply, to pray, especially this weekend, for the continuation of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Today we truly rejoice in Her Majesty, our Queen Elizabeth. We thank God for her shining, platinum, witness of service, full of faith and dignity. We offer our prayers to God for her and her family. May God bless you, Your Majesty.
#PlatinumJubilee
I have written to the Holy Father today to assure him of the fervent and heartfelt prayers of the Catholic community and so many others in England and Wales, and asked for his blessing on our communities and on all the people of these lands.

It is deeply irresponsible of any government to allow a change of this magnitude to happen without proper, government-supported parliamentary process.
I hope the bill will be defeated as it makes its way through the Houses of Parliament. I don’t think the story is over yet.
Since last March last year 17 priests of this Diocese have died. The latest sad death is that of Mgr Mark Langham. Each contributed mightily to the work of the Church, as did Mgr Mark. We pray for them all. Today we pray esp for Mgr Mark. May they rest in peace and rise in glory.
We thank God that #CardinalNewman is to be declared a #saint. For me the truly remarkable nature of this moment is that this is an English parish #priest being declared a saint. I hope every parish priest in England will hold his head high today. bit.ly/2I9998Y
Today is the day we rededicate ourselves to Our Blessed Lady. This act of dedication asks of us to make a gift of ourselves to her. We ask for her protection, her mantle of love cast over us and our nations. Please join in bit.ly/39p6LDa#RededicationAtHome#Behold2020
I was sad to hear of the death of Fr Dermott Donnelly. My prayers are with his family & all who will miss him greatly. We give thanks for his ministry with young people, esp with @cymfed@FlameCongress
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord. May he rest in peace and rise in glory ✝️
I congratulate the Rt Rev Sarah Mullally DBE on her appointment as Bishop of London. I assure her of my prayers as she prepares to take up leadership in the thriving Diocese of London. I look forward to our partnership in making Christ known in this diverse and unsleeping city.
My memories of Pope Francis will always centre around his face - he was a man who radiated a joy in his smile. He always wanted to convey a sense of hope in peoples lives. He would want us to understand that God's mercy was there. vaticannews.va/en/church/new…
Today we thank God for all the years of astonishing service that have been given by Her Majesty The Queen from that day of her solemn anointing, through times of peace and great sadness, suffering and joy.
God bless Her Majesty. May we pray for her always.
#PlatinumJubilee
We give thanks on the anniversary of ordination to the #priesthood of #PopeFrancis and pray that the Lord may continue to bless his ministry. Ad multos annos, Holy Father!
I am horrified to hear of the fatal attacks in Notre Dame in Nice. People have been killed in a sacred place, which they had entered in order to pray.
I know the Basilica well. It is much loved by the people of Nice and by so many visitors.
This is an important moment in our history.
On 13th November at 5.30pm, the Bishops of @catholicEW will pray before the Blessed Sacrament, asking God's blessing on our country. We pray that minds and hearts will be opened to see the life of every person as a gift from God.
Privileged to join the Faith Team yesterday to speak with mourners in the queue to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and to listen as they shared memories and what Her Majesty meant to them.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord. May she rest in peace. 🙏 ✝️
I was pleased to receive word from Fr Gabriel Romanelli, parish priest of Holy Family Church in Gaza, that he has recently spoken with Pope Francis and his community finds great comfort in hearing the Pope's voice.
I welcome the statement by the PM earlier today, that places of worship are now able to resume collective acts of worship from 4 July. I thank all who have worked hard to bring this about, not least my fellow religious leaders.
My full statement bit.ly/3fJXwB4
Congratulations to HM The Queen on the occasion of her 95th birthday. We thank her for all the years of outstanding service that she has given as our Queen and Sovereign, and we ask God’s blessings on the years of her reign that are still to come. #QueensBirthday
Please pray for peace in the Middle East, esp for people in #Gaza who are living through traumatic times & a dramatically deteriorating humanitarian situation. They are extremely vulnerable & deprived. Their fate is central to peace which can never be built on neglect.
Today, I was privileged to offer the Loyal Address to His Majesty King Charles III and to assure him of the support and prayers of the Catholic community of England and Wales. May God bless him and the Queen Consort. bit.ly/3JtlIcT
Lighting the Pascal candle for every one who died during the pandemic. It represents the light of the Risen Christ, who alone conquers death and opens for us a new life of forgiveness and peace. Jesus is our comfort and our hope. He is our light in these darkest of moments.
Today I give thanks to the Lord for his gift to me of fifty years of #priestly ministry.
It is my privilege to serve him, in and through you, the #Church the living Body of #Christ for all this time, and, please God, for the years to come.

Opening our churches for individual prayer on 15 June will be a big step forward for us and a big step forward for society. As we prepare for this much-anticipated day, here is my reflection on what this means for us.
bit.ly/2UxEd5M
The regular practice of our faith in God is a source of personal resilience & dedicated service of those in need, both vital in these difficult times. I am glad no measures have been introduced to obstruct or curtail this essential source of energy for the common good. #Lockdown
Please join me in praying on 13th November for the dignity of human life and that we may uphold a culture of life in our countries. In front of the Blessed Sacrament, let us pray that assisted suicide will not become the law in our lands.

As we receive ashes today we remember that we are of this earth. We are marked by the limitations and weaknesses of human reality, often spoken of as 'original sin'. For our sins we repent and ask pardon.
I invite you to join in this extraordinary moment of prayer with #PopeFrancis before the Lord for our world. Please join today at 5pm. Here's my invitation bit.ly/2UIPqQr
May God bless you and your families.

'As the horror of events in Ukraine unfold, I offer again this urgent invitation: Make #AshWednesday a world-wide day of fasting and prayer for the people of #Ukraine for an end to this evil aggression, for peace. Lord, have mercy on us all! #PrayForUkraine
Today, and in these days, I weep for the people of Gaza as they face not just a continuation of their immense suffering but an escalation in their hardship and desperation.
Our Lady of Gaza, pray for us. St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, pray for us.

Christ's victory over death, proclaimed this night, changes radically the way we understand ourselves and the unfolding of our lives. In the midst of this awful pandemic, let’s ponder this joyfully. He is risen! Alleluia! #EasterVigilbit.ly/39YLCQr
We thank Stephen Hawking for his outstanding contribution to science. As a member of the Pontifical Academy of Science, he will be missed and mourned there too.
How much we will miss Prince Philip’s presence and character, so full of life and vigour. He has been an example of steadfast loyalty and duty cheerfully given. May he rest in peace.
Please join me in prayer for Pope Francis as he makes this historic visit, and for the people of Iraq that these may be days of great joy that bear spiritual fruit.
Those who have followed reports on the health of the Holy Father and kept him in their prayers will know that he has continued his work, including the appointment of bishops. I am so pleased that he has appointed our Bishop John Sherrington to be the Archbishop of Liverpool.
May the coming of the Christ child bring a sure peace in your hearts.
May he make this Christmas a time of joy and love for you and all those dear to you.
A very happy Christmas to you all.

Today we celebrate the new Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham.
May the graces which flow from England's Nazareth bear fruit in our lives, so that we may be messengers of life and love, inspired by the sinless grace and beauty of Mary, our Queen and Mother.
Today I joined @bishopSarahM, @chiefrabbi, and many other faith leaders to express our concern at the terminally ill adults (end of life) bill, which will be debated by MPs on 29 November.

I give thanks for the ordination of our new priests and deacons today at @WestminsterCath. I pray that the Lord bless Deacons William Johnstone and Tim Mangatal, and Fathers Alexander Balzanella, David Knight and Axcel Soriano as they begin their ministry. 📷 Mazur/CBCEW.org.uk
This is the fast-track to sainthood! Carlo Acutis, born in London, baptised in the Church of Our Lady of Dolours, Fulham Road, died at the age of 15 in 2006, computer savvy and sometimes bullied at school, he is now held before the world as an inspiration for all. Why?
A day of great sadness all over the land. So many people, families, communities, remembering those who have died in these terrible months of the pandemic. Each one is mourned. Each one is to be prayed for. This is our instinct, our faith, our practice.
I woke this morning to the sad & shocking news of the bombings at churches & hotels in #SriLanka, after recent years of peace. I pray for all who have died, all who have been injured & whose lives have been radically changed by this violence, & for the Sri Lankan community in E&W
