Yesterday I said good bye to my hero, my best friend, my dad.
Big Al had a smile and presence that was in the room two minutes before he even got there. When he arrived, you better count your fingers after shaking his hand because those meathooks didn’t take it easy for anyone.
He was a man who gave everything he had for others and always put his family first. He’d share a beer and lend an ear for you to dump out your problems. Then he’d have some sage wisdom to help you out of your jam. Perhaps he would just show up at your house and fix the problem himself without being asked.
I’m sad for my mom, my sisters, my wife, and my daughter. But I’m happy knowing that he made a friend of everyone he met and I don’t know anyone who has a bad word to say about him. I’m happy knowing how my daughter lit up when she saw him. I’m happy we have countless stories to tell about him. I’m happy he imparted on me life lessons that I can pass on to my children.
I’m lucky he was my dad. I love you dad.
