Patrick is a fighter! He is currently recovering at the hospital after making the personal choice to get a tracheostomy and continue to fight against ALS.
For months he had been using a mask 24/7 to help with his breathing. After talking to the medical team for weeks, Patrick was ready to take this step. Following this surgery, Patrick will remain at the hospital for about 2 weeks alongside Nataly.

Update: Fortunately Pat is no longer dealing with pneumonia and the blood clot in his lungs is gone. These were two crucial ailments that have now been overcome.
However, Pat continues to have severe gastric discomfort, which has been attributed to the air pressure from the bi-pap machine. All avenues are being explored to remedy this situation.

Patrick was switched to his home ventilator yesterday and has completed the 24-hour trial. This trial is important because it mimics the home setting where only Nataly and the caregivers can respond to his needs and take care of him. Patrick’s feeding tube was fully clogged for 24 hours until this morning. He was not able to get any feedings or medications during that time. This caused him to be awake throughout the night as he can’t fall asleep on his own.
After many attempts to unclog it, his primary care doctor was able to replace his feeding tube at home. This was the last attempt to prevent another hospital visit and it worked. It was a very stressful 24 hours but once again Patrick pushed through. He is now hydrated, eating, and able to rest again.

Pat currently remains in the George Washington University Hospital ICU. His mind remains sharp and his spirits high large in-part to the outpouring support, but these latest complications are taking a physical toll. However, the physical pain and mental anguish are not all that comes with these new hurdles.
Costs will continue to rise to keep Pat alive. When he returns home he will need two around the clock caregivers, which in of itself will be upwards of $10,000 a week. However, this hospital stay alone, post what insurance may cover, is anticipated to be nearly $300,000.

This week Pat travels to the Healey Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for Qalsody and clinic.
What does it take for Pat and other ALS patients to travel for treatment? It takes patience, support and love to navigate the many hardships that ALS brings—many of which are exacerbated by traveling.
It also means many moving pieces:
- @uber XL’s to and from all destinations including the airport, hotel and the hospital
-Electric wheelchair for Pat to transport him to each respective place. The wheelchair must be stowed under the plane each flight with trust placed in the airline to handle it with care
-Pat’s caregiver Violet and a friend or family member travel with him on each trip
-2 hotel rooms, one of which needs to be handicap accessible
-All medications and Pat’s nutritional feeding supplements are able to travel on the plane, but require TSA assistance
-Pat’s Bi-Pap to support his breathing while resting or sleeping.
*All hotel and travel accommodations are at our own cost.

The scariest thing that can happen to someone who is on a ventilator full time, happened to Pat. After arriving from his appointment on Wednesday, there were issues with his main and backup ventilators. EMTs rushed him to the closest hospital as his ventilator turned off on the way and had to bag him for the last few minutes of the trip. Thank you to the great team at Sibley Hospital for having everything ready for his arrival.
Pat is doing well and watched the British Open as he had planned. He was discharged the next day as two new ventilators were delivered at the hospital. #BehanStrong #EndALS

Aside from Pat’s love of sports, he also loves animals! His favorite animals are manatees and beavers but prefers to have dogs as pets! 🐶
Pat grew up having dogs throughout his childhood and adopted his dog Murph, a few years back! Pat and Murph were inseparable. Murph was his best friend and companion. Sadly, Murph went to doggy heaven a few weeks after Pat’s diagnosis but will forever be in Pat’s heart. 🐾
One more day until Pat’s bday. Birthday flash fundraiser will be going live tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Today we want to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of Stephen Wilson, St. John’s ‘14. Today at 2pm there will be a Celebration of Life service in the Fitzpatrick Library at St. John’s. Stephen was a valued member of the SJC basketball community as both a player and coach.
For years, the Wilson family have been tremendous supporters of Pat, especially so during his fight with ALS. When Stephen passed, the Wilsons asked family and friends to donate in Stephen’s name towards Pats medical expenses. Over $3k was raised through this incredible act of generosity, all at the height of unthinkable sorrow.
Thank you Stephen for all you brought to this world and we pray for everlasting peace.

We are excited to announce this year's Behan Strong Invitational at @SJCBoysHoops on Saturday, January 4th. The purpose of this event is to help fundraise for @CoachBehanSJC and to bring awareness to ALS.
Pat attended Mayhem on Military to see SJC and will be back in the building for The Behan Strong Invitational. Pat shared a special message with the team after the game. #Family

Patrick’s ALS journey has touched the lives of many. We have received messages from former students, parents, friends, and people that have just learned about him. They all have one thing in common, that Patrick has impacted their lives in one way or another and that they have learned to not give up.
Mark Nakamura is one of them. Mark is Pat’s former student and a D1 soccer player at George Washington University. Mark has dedicated his season to Coach Behan. He wears the Behan Strong wristband at all times including during media day. He says that “Coach Behan’s fight has pushed me to fight every day and take nothing for granted.” He also mentions that he is happy that Coach Behan was able to touch his life and that his impact is still ever present.
Thank you, Mark and everyone that has reached out with similar messages. Patrick is overwhelmed by the support he continues to receive and thanks each one of you. Let’s all keep fighting every day and keep #PunchingBack4Pat.
