I'm halfway through my life. I'm 41. Born 1983. Life expectancy between ~70~80+ I think I have ~10 years to do what I want to do at work. I think I have ~20 years to do what I want to do for my-own-fun. I think I have ~40 years to do what I want to do as a parent/grandparent/great-grandparent. But I might only have today. If that doesn't put a tingle in your finger tips...you're not understanding how precious time is.

Went on vacation recently to Nantucket. Cool place. Also observed a lot of the challenges our society faces. 1) On the ferry home this morning, this is the scene - mostly 20-35yo adults - all the fancy clothes, gear, bags, suitcases…all on trend. Clearly a wealthy set. - few to none with kids. I saw 2 babies on a full boat at 11:15am on a Sunday. - sounded like a few left the kids behind for a couples weekend away etc or bc they were wedding guests. - most were scrolling the bejeesus out of Instagram, TikTok or YouTube Shorts etc. - most conversations were about instagram posts someone made, or the one they were making at that moment. 2) the working stiffs on the island are from Jamaica and other Caribbean islands, plus Mexico and South America. Some kids of people raised on the island. 3) crazy price appreciation since 1990. A $100,000 home is now $3M. My guess (uneducated) is the island runs out of workers that can afford to live there full time in the next 10-15 years as the older home owners die off and their places are bought by wealthier finance bros, rehabbed and turned into $4m houses. Feels like what I’ve seen in mountain towns out west. 4) the architecture is cute and consistent but maybe to the point of absurdity. How many grey shake houses with roses and hydrangeas does one island need?! 5) everything is expensive. Lunch one day was $300 for 9 with tip. It’s an island. I get it.

If your parents won’t tell you this…I will. You’re likely more talented in some other, non athletic way. Think about focusing on that. *(Same goes for hockey, basketball, soccer, etc)

Born on 3rd Base tips There are things you want to charter, rent, borrow, lease…but not own. Why? It’s not the cost…it’s the guilt. “I should be using that home/yacht/plane more!” 1) awesome second homes - they cost a fortune to maintain, heat and staff. Yes! For some of these places you have staff. It takes a team of 4+ to run Bill Gates home in Yellowstone Club. 2) yachts. Not your $5/day pontoon lake cruiser. These are 100ft or larger yachts with jet skis, a small boat on the aft, dining rooms and hot tubs…you get the point. They require a year round captain and crew. And maintenance! 3) airplanes. So cool…so expensive. And you probably want to paint it “your colors” when you get it. $1m a year sitting still is easy to say! Hard to pay! Status symbols are all so fun until you have a year like 1999, 2007/8, 2020…you get the point. Rent. Borrow. Lease. Charter. Pay the premium. Get the safest version and the best crew. Be patient, careful and critical. You’re paying for it after all!

In the 24 years since my Dad did not die on 9/11* He’s... - endured business hardship - enjoyed business success - welcomed 4 daughters in law (soon 5) - welcomed 17 grandchildren (soon more) - raced at Le Mans Classic - said good bye to Mom - survived a heart attack and a mini stroke - lived a full life with friends and family We celebrate 9/11 as a second birthday for him and he lives life fully, in part because he knows he’s been given more than his share of second chances at life! Many were not as lucky. *Dad didn’t die on 9/11 because he chose to skip the conference being held at the Windows on the World restaurant that day. He had tickets, hotels etc. All booked. His sales leader asked him a week before “we going?” Quick decision… “no, too much to do here.” There certainly was/is still too much to do here.

I remember on the morning of 9/11 I was able to get a call out to my dad and I said “looks like I’m going to war”. I was 18yo and a freshman at Villanova. Luckily others went, thank you. I got married, had kids, normal life for 23 years since. Depending on what the truth is about the shooter who attempted to assassinate President Trump, as well as the errors by the Secret Service, today’s events have the potential to spark a “war” like rejuvenation of American society. The war I speak of is bloodless, though there will be victims…through the ballot box, executive actions, judicial decisions, state & local elections and a population finally willing to cast off the yoke of a government unfit to serve us. The war will be the end of the careers for: - bureaucratic deadbeat obstructionists - zombie government programs - elected officials who said “sad they missed” Maybe I am too hopeful that people will see the truth that the government is now, always has been, and always will be, the actual enemy of we the people. Our fellow citizen is not the enemy. It’s the government who passes laws to spend more. To tax more. To say “you can’t do that bc 7 birds might die”. To say “you can’t do that bc you need a permit to cut hair, which costs $18,000 and requires 1,500 hours of school”. It’s the government who restricts your freedom in 10,000 ways you can’t even know about…you’re not allowed to know. It’s for your own good. Now run along get your 18th booster. You aren’t the problem. I’m not the problem. We are the people. Not the problem.

One weekend when I was about 12yo my New Jersey cousin, “Gig” took me to WVU to see one of his college hockey games. Spent the day and night at his rented house. In the corner was a boombox with a tall stack of CDs, mostly by this guy I hadn’t heard of, Bruce Springsteen. I remember the rink, but not the game or how Gig played as the goalie… but I do know that I was hooked on Springsteen. Listened to those cds all weekend and the whole car ride back. I’ve been to see a show as often as time and life allowed. Missed one show in Philly when a certain brother drove from Pittsburgh to Villanova “with” the tickets but not actually with the tickets. Spent $500 on fake scalped tickets. Bruce played Incident on 57th street and New York City Serenade that night. bummer! I would still be sore about it today…but when Bruce did Broadway, that same brother took us both with excellent seats. I didn’t ask how much they cost! In August of 2003, we had pit passes and went with the 3 younger brothers at an outdoor concert at PNC Park. Bruce pointed at @cdolan92 and then Charlie fell asleep in my arms for the encore! 🤣 he was 11yo but wasn’t heavy that night!! Tonight I took my 7 kids. Nosebleed seats. Behind the stage to one side. Doesn’t matter. We are in the building. Hearing the songs. A little part of my life, transferred to them. Maybe they will understand their dad a bit better. Maybe understand why my senior quote in high school is from Jungleland. “The poets down here don’t write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be” Maybe 50 years from now they’ll hear My Hometown and think of me and this experience. Hopefully they all stay awake!

The story of 1) wife to marry me. She thought I was funny. I met my wife sophomore year of college. We're from the same city, Pittsburgh. I was asked by a mutual friend to drive her to the airport since I guess we were both going to the airport at a similar time. I was not flying to Pittsburgh, she was. And so was my then girlfriend. Yup, drove them both. Wasn't weird bc I didn't know this young lady that my friend asked me to drive to the airport would be my wife in a few years. Sparks flew? Hardly. I thought she was ditzy, she thought I was spastic. -> both were kinda true. Her bubbly kindness can initially be misunderstood for a lack of brilliance. There is much brilliance. Ok, mine is true. I'm chaotic. Moving on. We met again Junior year when we had a party at our on-campus apartment. Same mutual friend invited the girls he knew over for the party. I recall thinking she was nice, cute, but that she had a boyfriend at the time and whatever, I was a long haired hockey player and a cool guy. I was looking for a wife...but not that seriously, yet. Senior year somewhere along the way I bumped into her in the hallway of the building where the computer repair center was. I was dropping off my computer, she was taking her art portfolio to be graded or picking it up. I asked her show her art to me. Ok, maybe made her a little. I'm insistent at times. I recall thinking she was cute and I wanted to get to know her more. She recalls me being very insistent about showing her the art, but that I was also complimentary of her art and cute. Most guys didn't care about her art. So I left I mostly positive impression. Now comes May 5, 2005. Our mutual friend's birthday. At a bar, Mcgillicutty's (near Bryn Mawr/rosemont on the main line) we get all of the tangential friends of the mutual friend together. Big party. Lotsa drinking. Only we two were the sober drivers that night. So, we chatted it up, leaning against the wall, all evening. Hardly attended the party. She thought I was funny. That was my impression, to this day she confirms it. I thought she was interesting, smart, cute, and the boyfriend was ended/ending, I was smitten. I spent the next ~2 weeks pursuing her during finals and Senior week. She was wise and held me mostly at arms length. Drunk college senior males are morons, she said "call me when we get back to Pittsburgh". I was calling at 11:00pm, 11:30, 12:30am, 1:45am, 1:55am, 1:59am.... We graduated May 21, 2005. I called and took her out. She says I was dressed unflatteringly (true). But that she liked me anyways. Win! Officially dating in June, 2005. Told my parents I was marrying her...sometime in June. I think after our 3rd date. Asked her parents permission sometime in September. Engaged December 26th, 2005. Married May 20, 2006. Fun tid bit about me... When I proposed, I had the church, reception and bishop already reserved for the date. I printed the invitation and gave it her, then dropped the knee and proposed. No speech. No photographer. Just us in the snow in Montana the day after christmas. Oh, and a snow cat. 😎 Photo is of then girlfriend dancing with young @cdolan92 at a party in Montana

You can just start a classic car shop! So I did. But why? The skilled mechanical knowledge of classic car repair and vintage racing is fading away as shop owners age out. The shops near me are owned by men in their late 60's and 70's. There's no "10 year plan" when you're 75. And the 10 year plan when you're 65 is to retire at some point. -> I refuse to let this part of my life, this part of the American tapestry, fade quietly into the night. I'm 42. I can fix this. What's the underlying problem? Most customers have negative experiences with classic car repair shops. Timelines are missed. Budgets are blown. Quality suffers because there's not enough people with the required skills. The business model needs an update and managerial talent. What's the solution? Heritage Auto Racing & Development and Repair of Pittsburgh. We have a different way of doing business. -> we scope the project up front, give a budget and a start/expected end date, collect 50% up front and then update & bill you regularly (weekly). Why is that better? For us, it solves cash flow (kills a lot of shops), and prevents customers being 'surprised' by their bill. Customers want to be involved in the process, see the progress, know that work is being done. They don't mind paying the bills if they have an going sense of the progress, of the effort. And yes, even of the set backs. Most importantly, we don't apologize that this is expensive. We discuss that up front. It's a curious thing in vintage cars. Many times the shop will deliver an invoice with the qualifier "it should have been $7,000, but I felt bad for you so I knocked off $500 because that part failed" It's strange! Am I supposed to feel bad for you while also paying you $6,500?! Charge me $7,000 and spare me your emotional turmoil! I just want to know the car is repaired properly, safely and is reliable. Thank you. Rant over. If you're in the market for vintage car repair, for racing support, even just for an oil change on your Mustang, your Porsche, Fiat, Triumph, MG, Morgan, Rolls Royce, Corvette, AMC, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Ferrari, Maserati, Alpha Romeo, Nissan, Datsun, Shelby, Packard, Honda, Peugeot, Citroen, your British, Italian, American, French or Japanese car.... maybe Heritage will be right for you. Lastly, we drive and race our own product. I am the father of 7 children, future drivers and racers among them. I demand the same safety, quality of workmanship and reliability for your project that I expect for my own. Rob, who leads our shop, has the same mentality. webpage link is in the following post Thank you for attention to this matter! Credit to: @AlexLathery delivered a terrific web page. Quickly, on budget, with excellent guidance and a smile on his face. Great guy to work with. (that's the kind of result we aim for at Heritage!) Hating them is bad. Being disappointed that they aren’t including you/grandkids in their priority list is healthy
