๐ No country is immune to violence. But violence and conflict are not inevitable, and prevention works.
Too often, prevention efforts are delayed or never fully implemented because their impact can be difficult to measure and communicate. Prevention is complex, requiring coordinated action across sectors and institutions. No single actor can do it alone.
Thatโs where National Prevention Strategies come in. They help bring together efforts across development, security, social cohesion, and other sectors into a coherent and effective system.
But important questions remain:
๐น What does an effective National Prevention Strategy actually look like?
๐น How can different actors work together to address the complexity of violence and prevention?
๐น What should be measured to demonstrate impact and communicate success?
๐น How can international partners effectively & coherently support national actors when requested, especially when no single entity can provide all the support needed?
๐ก To answer these questions, yesterday, as part of the inaugural UN Peacebuilding Week, the Center on International Cooperation (CIC) at NYU (
#NYUCIC), in partnership with
@dfat, launched Policy Guidance for Effective National Prevention Strategies at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The launch event was co-hosted by the Missions of Angola ๐ฆ๐ด, Timor-Leste ๐น๐ฑ, Sierra Leone ๐ธ๐ฑ, and Papua New Guinea ๐ต๐ฌ to the UN.
๐งฐ This tool offers practical support for countries seeking to design or strengthen their own prevention strategies, while also helping international partners, including donors, the UN, and international financial institutions, identify where support and investment can have the greatest impact, and how to support coherently.
๐ฏ The goal is to:
โ๏ธ Strengthen the effectiveness of National Prevention Strategies.
โ๏ธ Build confidence in prevention approaches.
โ๏ธ Increase political commitment and investment.
โ๏ธ Support more coordinated and effective multilateral support.
From fostering political and social buy-in and grounding strategies in evidence, to ensuring sustained financing and adapting to changing risks, the new tool offers practical guidance to help countries invest in prevention and avoid the far greater human and economic costs of responding to conflict and violence after it erupts.
