Member of Parliament for Willowdale; Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the King’s Privy Council and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade 🇨🇦
My message in Ottawa today was clear: the international community, including Canada, must move well beyond condemnation of the regime in Tehran and adopt concrete steps to assist brave Iranians. #Iranprotests#PS75
1. For today’s momentous decision to oust Iran from UN Commission on Status of Women many activists must be thanked, in particular @NazaninBoniadi, @NazaninNour and @GissouNia, but also a group I encountered just outside the UN while I strolled over this morning.
A moment far too many have been waiting for: Canada, Ukraine, the UK and Sweden launch the formal legal process to hold the Islamic Republic of Iran accountable for its multiple breaches of international law with respect to flight PS752.
Thank you to Ministers’ Mendicino and Fraser for designating the Islamic Republic of Iran as a regime that engages in terrorism and systematic and gross human rights violations.
All senior officials, diplomats and members of the judiciary are now deemed inadmissible to Canada.
Appalled that Iran’s highest judicial authority upheld death sentences for Amir Hossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi for having participated in Iranian anti-government protests last November.
Outrageous intervention by Russia at ECOSOC to delay on procedural grounds imminent vote by 54 member states on whether IR of Iran be outed from membership on Commission on the Status of Women. Genuine example of international axis of autocracies. #MahsaAmini#WomenLifeFreedom
The tragic death of #MahsaAmini once again reveals the Islamic Republic’s true colours: a repressive state apparatus wholly committed to extinguishing civil liberties and dedicated entirely to suffocating any semblance of freedom. theguardian.com/global-devel…
A big tip of the hat to @esmaeilion and his team for organizing a solidarity march in Berlin attended by 100,000.
Every brave protestor in Iran should know that the International community stands fully behind them.
Please find a copy of my submission to Commissioner Hogue requesting that her Foreign Interference Inquiry include the I.R of Iran in the scope of its investigation.
In my opinion the important work of the Commission would be incomplete without including Iran.
Happy to inform everyone that today the Canadian Government announced that it will officially list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity.
2. While overjoyed that Iran kicked off UNCSW today, also reflected on my father who sat in this place in 1970s as Iran’s Permanent Representative to UN and Vice-Chair of ECOSOC, advocating with every other member of Iranian delegation for empowerment of women. #MahsaAmini
Always ready to stand up and condemn the abhorent and reprehensible human rights record of the Iranian Government. No one deserves to live amidst fear and repression, day after day, week after week, or year after year.
Feel free to join 2 memorial events happening Sunday: the #ReclaimYonge walk, 5:30 PM at Olive Square & Albert Standing Park, and proceeding to Mel Lastman Square for the second event, the #TorontoStrong vigil at 7 PM. Together, we'll mourn, reflect, and find our way forward.
My thoughts are with the courageous protestors throughout Iran undeterred by the brutal government crackdown. No where else in the world would protests against soaring fuel prices lead to dozens being killed and the wholesale arrest of over a thousand protestors by a regime.
Thank you to Prime Minister Carney for his trust and faith in appointing me to Cabinet as the Minister responsible for Government Transformation, Public Services and Procurement. I am deeply honoured to serve at such a consequential time in our country’s history.
To the residents of Willowdale, thank you for affording me the privilege of representing our dynamic community.
🇨🇦 Canada Strong 💪
Thank you to the 50,000 residents of the Greater Toronto Area who joined in solidarity with brave and courageous Iranians standing up to the ruthless theocratic regime in Iran.
Thank you to organizers @esmaeilion; @HadiMehry; @kshahrooz; @babakp; @shahrammaafi and others.
Yesterday, I asked Minister of Foreign Affairs @melaniejoly about the fourth round of sanctions imposed on odious figures of the Iranian regime by our Government in the last month. Apologies in advance for my coarse voice on account of protests on the weekend.
Proud to bear witness to the first public meeting of eight of the principal figures outside Iran that have been echoing the demands emanating from the revolution in Iran. A significant first step that the Iranian regimes will rue, and will hasten its collapse. #WomanLifeFreedom
Had opportunity today to personally thank @USAmbUN Thomas-Greenfield for her leadership in ensuring the IR of Iran was kicked off the UN Commission on Status of Women. She has ensured that the courage of brave Iranian women continue to reverberate around the world. #MahsaAmini
Was happy to share my personal perspective on the CBC yesterday. The sanctioning of 34 Iranian officials and entities is not sufficient, and that sanctions on more individuals and other concrete steps are imperative.
Ottawa sanctions 34 Iranian officials and entities — Liberal MP says it's not enough, calling it "too little, too late." Ali Ehsassi, Liberal MP representing Willowdale: "I can only speak for myself. I would say that we still have a lot of work to do." cbc.ca/1.6603840
Heard on the Hill: Three-term Liberal MP and international trade lawyer Ehsassi elected chair of House Foreign Affairs Committee #cdnpolibit.ly/3xlww6u (subs)
You are such a class act and an impeccable advocate. Thank you for your tireless advocacy in the last decade, and your indefatigable round the clock efforts and leadership in the last seven months. We all owe you a great debt of gratitude.
Truly humbled to have been appointed a Parliamentary Secretary by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and thrilled, beyond belief, to have the privilege to serve Minister Navdeep Bains, the phenomenal Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
While I’m Brussels, took the time to visit my Belgian parliamentary colleague @SafaiDarya and @bashirtash to personally thank them for organizing the huge rally held in Belgium against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Eminent global leaders call on UN member states to immediately remove the Islamic Republic of Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women. Thank you @AKimCampbell; @cafreeland and @melaniejoly.
Add your name to the online letter at womanlifefreedom.today
It was a privilege to table Petition e-4270, in cooperation with the Canadian Hazara Advocacy Group, urging the government to address the persecution of the Hazara in Afghanistan and support them in Canada.
Many thanks to @TShaaran and @AryaCanada for their tireless advocacy
The death of Mahsa Amini, Tehran’s brutality towards protestors, and indiscriminate attack on youth, and now the fire at Evin prison, should behoove the international community to remove Iran from the UN Commission on Status of Women and establish an HRC accountability mechanism.
Scary to see that Ottawa has its own Morality Police. I never realized scholar’s were meant to act as arbiter’s as to who has the right to offer their personal sentiments and perspective, and who does not.
For those gathering this evening to celebrate Yalda, may we use the longest evening of the year to reflect on the highest ideals of those residing in Iran, and redouble our individual & collective efforts to ensure that light prevails over darkness in the days and months ahead.
3. Before inexorable backsliding started in 1979, Iran was second country to appoint a Minister for Women’s Affairs in 1970s, its delegation at UN included exceptional female diplomats, and it secured honour to host 2nd UN Conference on Women in Tehran in 1980. #mahsaami̇ni̇
4. While sitting at UN today surrounded by diplomats & overjoyed that Iran kicked off Commission on Status of Women, also reflected on my grandfather’s sister, Iran Teymourtache, who served as Iran’s first officially accredited female diplomat in 1950s. #MahsaAmini
Thank you to member states that voted in favour of removing IR of Iran from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. #MahsaAmini#WomenLifeFreedom
Heard from a stellar panel of experts about the dire human rights situation in Iran at the Sub-Committee on International Human Rights yesterday. For any one that may wish to listen in on the session, please find the link below:

Ever so grateful to Prime Minister Carney for having appointed me as Parliamentary Secretary to, the one and only, Minister Dominic LeBlanc, to assist on issues pertaining to Canada-U.S. Trade.
The carnage created by Hamas in Israel is unconscionable and should be condemned unequivocally by every member of the international community.
Terrorism and the indiscriminate targeting of civilians is utterly unacceptable and vile
Thank you @NatashaFatah for having me on and for the extensive coverage you have devoted to developments in Iran over the course of the past several months. Much appreciated.
Iran Protests:
The US has put Iran's IRGC on a terror list.
The UK will.
The EU likely will.
So why hasn't Canada done it yet?
We speak with Liberal MP @AliEhsassi about the federal government's response and what he's hearing from the community.

Incredibly excited to be sworn in for a third term. Immeasurably grateful and humbled by the residents of Willowdale for granting me the privilege to continue to serve them, and indebted to countless individuals who have helped me every step of the way over the past six years.
Honoured to welcome to the Parliamentary Press Gallery in Ottawa representatives of a delegation of more than forty Afghan & Iranian women that arrived to urge Canada to join the international campaign to codify Gender Apartheid in international law. #EndGenderApartheid.
Given the several day visit by members of the Alliance for Democracy in Iran to Toronto and Ottawa, it was great to hear the ideals and aspirations of courageous Iranians ricochet in both cities & amplified in Parliament.
Thank you to the many who made all these events possible
Tomorrow, we honour the innocent victims tragically lost in the criminal downing of Flight PS752. Canada must ensure that the international community holds the shameless Iranian Government to account. Our commitment is unwavering - justice and accountability must prevail.
A true privilege to join fellow MPs to be present when the City of Ottawa unveiled its street sign bearing the name Mahsa Jina Amini. It was appropriately affixed right in front of what was once the Islamic Republic of Iran’s embassy in Ottawa.
#WomanLifeFreedom
Must be nice to sit in an ivory tower, insulated from the pain and anguish suffered by untold millions over the past 43 years, including relatives of passengers on flight PS752, and the thousands upon thousands brutalized over the last 10 days, and dismiss something as symbolic.
While we should all welcome the news that Iran’s Supreme Court has overturned the courageous rapper Toomaj’s death sentence, we should continue to demand that he be immediately released and that all charges against him be dropped.
Gun crime in Canada is on the rise, & Canada has no clear classification for assault rifles. A re-elected Liberal government will build on measures we passed in Bill C-71, & take serious action to crack down on gun crime, including a ban on all military-style assault rifles.
Please consider joining us tomorrow at the University of Toronto for a memorial organized by Tirgan, M.P.P. Michael Parsa, and myself to commemorate the victims of Flight 752.
What an unforgettable day! Over 3,000 strong — full of energy, passion, and purpose — rallying behind Mark Carney and the vision for a stronger, united Canada. Thank you to everyone who showed up and made this moment so powerful. This is just the beginning!
Last night I was honoured to join the grieving families and friends of the innocent heroes who perished aboard Flight PS752 four years ago.
The candlelight vigil reminded us of our solemn obligation to ensure that the Iranian regime is held fully accountable for its heinous crime
Great to join stellar panelists @GenevaSummit to discuss gross human rights violations occurring in Iran. Thank you immeasurably to @HillelNeuer for convening the gathering & awarding the unflappable @shimababaeii the Summit’s Women’s Rights Award.
#GenevaSummit2023
One year ago today, we all witnessed the heart wrenching downing of Flight PS752 over the skies of Tehran.
January 8, 2020 marks a day that will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of Canadians.
#PS752justice; #IWillLightACandleToo
Proud our Government announced today the addition of 17 individuals and 3 entities engaged in gross human rights violations in the Islamic Republic, including the country’s chief propagandist abroad, Mohammad Javad Zarif. canada.ca/en/global-affairs/…#IranProtests
The Iranian regime’s continued breach of international law are well known and documented, including its blatant disregard for human life.
Canada will always stand with the victims of this regime— and that’s why we’re imposing new sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities.
For the Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024, our office has obtained Eclipser glasses from the Department of Astronomy at York University.
To obtain a free pair, please drop by our office at 115 Sheppard Avenue West or send us a message and I will have a pair dropped off for you.
Great honour to join the relatives and supporters of PS752 Justice Rally in Ottawa. We all stand with them, and will not waiver, until full accountability is forthcoming and justice is served with respect to this horrific tragedy.#JusticeRally
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Iranian Government’s downing of Flight #PS752.
Today we honour the memory of the 176 victims and consider the unbearable pain their loved ones have suffered.
We also reaffirm our commitment to pursue justice and accountability.
Honoured to have presented the King Charles III Coronation Medal to outstanding individuals of distinction who have impacted our community, country, and beyond.
Thank you to 🇦🇷🇧🇯🇨🇿🇫🇮🇫🇷🇬🇦🇬🇲🇩🇪🇭🇳🇯🇵🇱🇾🇱🇹🇱🇺🇲🇭🇲🇽🇲🇪🇳🇵🇳🇱🇵🇾🇵🇱🇰🇷🇸🇴🇺🇦🇬🇧🇺🇸 for voting to establish a 🇺🇳 Fact-finding Mission to investigate human rights violations by the Iranian regime against its own citizens since protests erupted across the country in the last ten weeks.
Great to catchup with my Swedish colleague who has been doing phenomenal work regarding holding the Islamic Republic of Iran to account over the past several months.
Ran into Ali Ehsassi MP in Canada in the Swedish parliament the other day. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to talk for long, but we did manage to take a photo. Soon there will be another visit to Canada/US and a new opportunity to see each other and discuss our steps forward.
Wishing all those celebrating #nowruz today an exceptionally inspiring year ahead

As of today, single-use plastics that are harmful to the environment- such as plastic bags and plastic stir straws- are banned from being manufactured or imported.
Promise made, promise kept.
It’s official! 🔔
I’m officially registered as the Liberal candidate for Willowdale!
It’s been the honour of a lifetime to serve as your MP—and I’m more committed than ever to building a stronger, fairer, more prosperous Canada.
Elbows up, Willowdale! 💪
And we're off! Today marks the start of the 44th General Election. I can't wait to meet you and talk about our plan to move Forward Together, for every family in Willowdale.
The sheer outpour of support for survivors of the Tehran plane crash from friends and strangers alike, of all faiths and communities, has been overwhelming.
Thank you to my parliamentary colleague for her motion unanimously adopted by the House of Commons to express solidarity with the women of Iran and all those who have taken to the streets in cities around Iran in response to the appalling death of #MahsaAmini#IranProtests2022
Congratulations to our new leader Mark Carney on his resounding victory last night.
We are fortunate as Canadians to have such a uniquely qualified individual at the helm who is laser focused on building a stronger Canada.
🇨🇦 Canada Strong 💪
Congratulations Mr. President-elect. As Bear Bryant memorably put it, “Show class, have pride, and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself.”
14 thousand people are behind bars in #Iran for taking part in protests. Many accused of “war against God” & “corruption on earth”& facing the death penalty. Some facing revolutionary court judge in Tehran who was sanctioned by US- “the judge of death”. #MahsaAmini#مهسا_امینی
Deeply saddened by the loss of many innocent lives, including 63 Canadians, as a result of the Ukrainian Airline crash near Tehran. My heartfelt thoughts are with their families.
Soccer Canada is not only ignoring the counsel of our PM, the Premier of BC, the Mayor of Vancouver and our High Commissioner the UK, but refuses to answer inquiries by the CBC, and has yet to respond to two letters sent by the relatives of the #PS752 tragedy in two weeks.
This behaviour by Canada Soccer is repugnant. It calls into question both the competence and the values of the organization. cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-…
At sundown today, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will welcome the beginning of Hanukkah. At this time, we reflect on life’s blessings and recognize the significant contributions that Jewish Canadians make to our country. To all, Chag Hanukkah Sameach!
In today's throne speech, we outlined a plan to finish the fight against COVID-19, to make life more affordable, to put home ownership back in reach, to create jobs, and grow the middle class.
Its a plan I'm proud to fight for, so let's get to work.
The people of Turkey and Syria need our help. It is the obligation of countries like Canada to support those most affected. The government is now matching donations to @redcrosscanada up to $10 million. See my address to the House below:
Have arrived in Ukraine with a delegation of European legislators to meet authorities and to witness first hand the atrocities committed by Russia. 🇨🇦🇺🇦
Official Iranian delegation appearing before ECOSOC, makes absurd argument that decision by the 54 member states to oust Iran from Commission on Status of Women would amount to “strong hostility to Iranian nation”.
Every individual with a conscience around the world should be shocked and appalled that the Iranian regime and its IRGC thugs have adopted methods utilized by Nazi paramilitary forces and their goons in the 1930’s to identify dissenting voices.
Islamic Republic of Iran started marking the houses that nightly chant anti-regime slogans, mainly: “Woman, life, Liberty” and “Death to dictator” to identify the peaceful protesters.
This regime has no boundaries!
#MahsaAmini
