I don’t care if your church sings classic hymns, modern hymns, whatever, as long as they are Christ-centered and are written by actual Christians, go for it. Choir, band, both, don’t care.
But man… whatever you sing, sing it like you’re going into battle! Sing it like Jesus lives and our mission is to rip souls out of Satan’s grasp with the Gospel. We always complain about men not singing, well give them something a man would sing. Maybe they don’t want to sing songs that sound like they were written for and by middle school crushes. “Then you came along and put me back together. Every desire is satisfied here in your love” vs. “High King of heaven, my victory won / May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun / Heart of my own heart, whatever befall / Still be my vision, O ruler of all.” No contest.
I fear that church after church is stuck creating a worship environment that sounds like some Enya-laced yoga studio or a postmodern preschool therapy session where it’s Billy’s turn to hold the feelings stick. We are worshipping the living God who conquered sin and death, and we are being sent out to mission at work, at home, and in the public square. Sing it with heart, guts, boldness, and occasionally even a scripture-based war chant a cappella. 😎
