What is a Runoff Election & why is Georgia having two? Learn more about the upcoming special election in the peach state that could swing the balance of power in the Senate 👇 #GeorgiaSenateRunoffs
ALT The State of Georgia will hold two runoff elections in January. What are runoffs and what should residents of Georgia expect? Read on.
ALT WHO IS ON THE BALLOT? On January 5, 2021, incumbent Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue will face Democrat challengers Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, respectively, in Georgia’s ongoing 2020 U.S. Senate races.
ALT WHY IS A RUNOFF OCCURRING? Per Georgia law, a candidate for office must receive at least 50% of the votes in order to win an election. If no candidate reaches the 50% threshold, a runoff occurs automatically between the two candidates with the highest majority of votes. Georgia and Louisiana are the only two states that hold runoffs in general elections.
ALT WHY ARE BOTH GEORGIA SENATORS UP FOR RE-ELECTION?Georgia’s Senate elections are typically staggered so both seats aren’t up for grabs at the same time. This year was different because Senator Kelly Loeffler was running in a special election. Loeffler was appointed to the Senate last year after longtime Senator Johnny Isakson retired before his term was complete. Whichever candidate wins the race will serve out the duration of Isakson’s term until 2022. Senator David Perdue faces Jon Ossoff in the state’s second runoff. Whichever candidate wins will serve a full 6-year Senate term until 2026.
