Winston is a state comprehensive school, with a strong vision for the future and the strength of leadership and capacity to achieve our goals.

The heat wave has not defeated us yet as we are adapting and creating new opportunities for our students within different sporting activities. On Tuesday 23rd June, Dryvebox UK set up their simulator and we invited 10 students per lesson across the day to experience a state-of the art golf lesson with former Portuguese golf player, Pedro Lemos. It was fantastic to see our students explore, take on individual feedback and progress within this environment and thank you to the Kate & Justin Rose Foundation for providing this. The PE department also enjoyed a cheeky go at break time! We look forward to working with the foundation again in the future. Ms Kovic

Last week, more than 900 students and staff started "the day the active way" by taking part in one of three wellbeing walks around the school field as part of our Active Travel Week. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with students enjoying the opportunity to get some fresh air, be active, and spend time socialising with friends before the start of the day.  The walks created a vibrant atmosphere across the school and provided a fantastic boost to wellbeing. Throughout the week, KS3 students were also encouraged to cycle to school, with all participants being entered into a prize draw, which will take place later this week. The feedback from students summed up the week perfectly:  "Energetic, brilliant, very positive, vibrant, super fun!" A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make Active Travel Week such a success. Mrs Sigrist

A group of our Year 7–9 students recently took part in an exciting Aquathlon, showing fantastic determination, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the event. Combining swimming and running, the competition challenged all participants to push themselves both physically and mentally. All of the students represented the school brilliantly, giving their best effort and supporting one another from start to finish. Their hard work and commitment were clear to see, and they should all be very proud of their performances. A special congratulations goes to Anastasia in Year 8, who delivered an outstanding performance to finish 1st in her age group, and to Takara in Year 9 who achieved an excellent 2nd place in his age group. The Fiction shelves in the Library have been getting a bit of a makeover and changing from being organised in alphabetical order by authors surname, to being organised by Genre. This has been in the works for a little while but as it's such a big task, we have needed all the help we can get. We currently have a team of twenty Year 7 and 8 students working as Library Assistants and helping out in the Library during their social time. Each student has an allocated day on the rota where they will come in and support Mrs Jones and Ms Roos with a range of tasks centred around keeping the Library running smoothly. Each week on a Tuesday during form time, Mrs Jones meets with the Library Assistants to update them on how things in the Library are going, including the Genre project and other displays or events that may be happening. For the last couple of weeks during their Library Assistant meetings, they have worked hard as a whole team to help sort the shelves, splitting into groups to either move books to create more space, check the genres of books or generally tidy up. All the Library Assistants have been awarded achievement points for their hard work each week and badges have been ordered for them to wear proudly. A huge thank you to the Library Assistants! The Library Team

After the brilliant results in the Junior Maths Challenge, 1 year 7, and 8 year 8's were invited to take part in the next stage of the challenge, The Junior Kangaroo Challenge. 1 student achieved gold, 1 achieved silver, and 4 achieved bronze. I am very proud of these students for these results, and the resilience and ability the students have demonstrated to get this far. The year 8 students will now move up the Intermediate challenge next year, and I am looking forward to how they perform at a much higher level. PS - Excuse the uniforms, it was a very hot day, but I managed to get all smiles this time around! Mr Eaton

Our two day induction programme for Year 6 has triggered the start of their journey through Winston. Three hundred very excited year 6 students joined us to experience lessons, and most importantly lunch! They met most of their tutors and many of their teachers and were looked after by a great team of peer mentors.

Staff comments were all around how well the students settled into and met expectations at Winston. Everyone participated and began to show the resilience we all require when approaching a new experience.

This was the worst kept secret but the best surprise!! Leavers' Assembly and The Festival on the Field took place last Monday. Year 11 have a reputation for being the best Year group in the school and they proved it throughout the events. They have worked hard throughout the examination period and now have a chance to relax and reflect on the last five years of learning and friendship, of routine and inspiration and the great leadership of Mr Weale, Ms Sandling, Mrs Cotter and the Year Team. The assembly was loud and full of laughter and tears.  There was something for everyone to remember, especially in the montage of memories put together by Mr Martin. Then cam the contribution from the Form Tutors.  It was amazing but that will be in the next blog! Staff and students clapped as Year 11 left the hall and went up to the filed for a BBQ, ice-cream, games and bouncy assault course. Year 11 are ready to move on but the reality of it certainly hit home. You have all been an absolute credit to your school and the staff who have helped you to grow into such super young people. Enjoy a well deserved holiday, as well as the images below.  We will see you all in August to celebrate your results.

Winston PE prefects have started a new initiative this year to introduce Year 6 students to Winston Churchill PE! They are known as the 'Activators'. We completed our first session at Sythwood Primary School to a group of brilliant and enthusiastic pupils who will be joining us in September. We started with a 'get to know' us activity which kept them moving, working collaboratively and also developed their literacy skills. Mrs Kovic is very proud of the PE student volunteers who have put in their own time to plan and prepare the sessions, and we can't wait until we return next week! Amy Kovic Director of Sport

Woking Young Musicians Trust is a charitable organisation that has been awarding grants to students for demonstrating musical excellence for over 40 years. During this time a number of Winston students have successfully auditioned and this year we are celebrating a double success! Huge congratulations go to Year 11 student Yin Sing (Violin) and Year 10 student Milo (Drum Kit) who have been successful in their applications for an award. Both Yin Sing and Milo had to write a detailed application explaining their musical achievements to date, and what they would use any grant for. They then had to complete an audition in front of a panel of 8 trustees of the charity, performing on their instrument and speaking about their passion for music. Both students were able to demonstrate their outstanding ability and dedication to music. As successful applicants, they performed in the winners concert in St Peter's Church Old Woking on 31st May in the presence of the Mayor of Woking. They were a real credit to themselves and their hard work, and an excellent showcase of the talented students that we have here in the Winston music department. Mr Drake Director of Music
