When we say BLOO is nutrition for your scalp, we mean it!
Here’s a breakdown of our 6 carefully-selected ingredients and why we picked them.
1. SALICYLIC ACID
Salicylic acid is a metabolite of and a precursor to acetylsalicylic acid. You may not recognize that chemical, but you’ll probably recognize its more common name, aspirin! Any time you see BHA (beta hydroxy acid) listed as an ingredient in a skincare product, it’s likely salicylic acid, since it's the most common BHA. So what’s so special about it? Tons. It fights inflammation and dandruff, exfoliates, maintains pH balance, unclogs hair follicles, boosts metabolism, and has even shown anti-cancer potential. The antimicrobial aspect of salicylic acid is also very useful in pushing back against hair loss.
2. BAKING SODA
Baking soda is another underrated tool to have in your toolbox. Baking soda is anti-inflammatory, pH-balancing, anti-dandruff, and can fix oily scalps by preventing accumulation of oil. Baking soda opposes lactate, increasing production of CO2 which increases oxygen delivery through the Bohr effect. It is for this reason that athletes take baking soda baths after a tough workout!
3. NIACINAMIDE (B3)
Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) has been used in many skincare products for its anti-aging benefits. It improves cell metabolism, skin tone, collagen, keratin, and elastin production. It also protects against sun damage and acne while minimizing wrinkles. Niacinamide is a versatile tool for protecting against oxidative stress.
4. TAURINE
Taurine boosts skin cell metabolism (noticing a pattern yet?), lowers inflammation and irritation, moisturizes, supports skin barrier function, enhances skin elasticity, and is anti-stress. Taurine has shown potential in treating skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne. While taurine is not a traditionally essential amino acid, it is often very low–and very needed–in people under chronic stress.
5. CAFFEINE
Caffeine is yet another versatile, metabolism-boosting powerhouse. It has adaptogenic properties, meaning it can help the body manage stress and return to a stable state. This may seem counterintuitive since many people paint caffeine as adrenergic, but the truth is more nuanced: caffeine is a thyroid-mimetic, meaning it increases cellular energy and thus plays a role in stabilizing cell structure and function. Caffeine improves circulation, reduces wrinkles, and has antioxidant properties- a big reason why it is often used in eye creams and face masks.
6. METHYLENE BLUE
Methylene blue is history's very first synthetic drug. It is incredibly versatile when it comes to cellular energy, acting as both an oxidant and an antioxidant depending on what the situation calls for. Methylene blue is a broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and rejuvenating compound. At the dose included in BLOO, it will do these things gently and without dying tubs or lighter-colored hair!
