Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir slammed the US-brokered agreement Israel and Lebanon signed on June 26, calling it "a big mistake" and arguing that the Lebanese government could not be trusted to disarm Hezbollah.
In a post on Telegram, Ben Gvir said that members of Lebanon's government include Hezbollah ministers and said only Israeli forces, not the Lebanese state or any other party, would be able to dismantle the group's military capabilities.
His remarks came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the agreement as a "historic" achievement following direct negotiations between the two countries. Netanyahu said the deal represented a significant blow to Iran and Hezbollah.
Meanwhile, Israel carried out drone and air strikes in southern Lebanon on June 27, a day after the agreement was signed. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz also said the military was preparing for an extended stay in the security zone there
