It’s time for a crackdown on public drug use. The illegal use of fentanyl and other hard drugs is a nationwide crisis. We know public drug use on transit is a serious safety concern for our riders and employees, and that it makes TriMet a less appealing travel option. Everyone deserves to enjoy our public spaces and use our public services safely without being exposed to illegal drug use. In June, we participated in a University of Washington study that tested the air and surfaces on several MAX trains. Not surprisingly, the samples showed traces of fentanyl, meth and other illegal drugs. However, the concentration of drug residue was extremely low and did not pose a public health risk. Although the study showed only trace amounts of drug residue, we want to keep illegal drug use off of our transit system entirely. To this end, we’ve doubled the number of our security personnel and expanded our ability to cite and exclude problematic riders, among other security improvements. But Oregon law poses challenges for keeping the smoking of fentanyl and meth out of public spaces. We depend on state and local officials and lawmakers to enact policy changes and enforcement to help curb this epidemic. Visit the blog to learn more about what we’re doing to combat illegal drug use and what more is needed: blog.trimet.org/2023/09/07/i…

Did you know Tilikum Crossing’s lights change based on the Willamette River’s height, speed, temperature and tide? 😮 Warmer river conditions display warmer colors, like orange and yellow, while cooler temperatures display cool colors, like green and blue. The speed of the river controls how quickly the colors change. Learn more on the blog: blog.trimet.org/2016/03/21/h…

Light rail vehicle 116 has been in service for nearly 40 years. We're decommissioning it and the other first generation MAX trains to make room for our new Type 6s, which should be in service later this summer. The "retirement" process involves our mechanics first removing parts from the trains’ HVAC systems, then the wheel trucks, gearbox oil, hydraulic fluid, batteries and other components that can't be recycled. Then, they're taken to a local recycling facility where they're broken down and turned into metal.

Let’s make TriMet a drug-free zone. We believe all Portland-area residents deserve a safe, welcoming and reliable transit system – one where they should not have to fear encountering illegal drug use. Senate Bill 1553-1 would make illegal drug use on transit a Class A Misdemeanor. Proposed by the Oregon Transit Association and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757, Senate Bill 1553-1 would add using illicit drugs to an existing state statute that governs behavior on public transit – giving police much-needed tools to help make transit systems in the state, including TriMet, drug-free zones. Senate Bill 1553-1 would apply the existing crime of “Interfering with Public Transportation” to the use of illicit drugs on transit. This includes smoking, igniting, injecting or consuming drugs on a vehicle or at a transit station. By making this change in the law, police would have the enforcement tools they need to help make public transit a drug-free zone and give people experiencing addiction a path to help. TriMet stands with the Oregon Transit Association, ATU Local 757, and our fellow transit agencies statewide in taking action to ensure the safety of riders and employees and reclaim our public spaces and public services for the benefit of all. Visit the blog to learn more about Senate Bill 1553-1 and how you can share your views by calling or emailing your legislators: blog.trimet.org/2024/02/08/l…

We want to thank you for your patience as our crews work round-the-clock to dig out from another historic winter storm. All TriMet bus lines scheduled today are running, but MAX service remains temporarily suspended at this hour. We join our transportation partners in encouraging people to avoid traveling, if possible, until after the next phase of the storm - the forecasted freezing rain - comes through tomorrow. If you are traveling by transit, plan ahead by checking trimet.org/alerts first and limit trips only to those that are necessary. Conditions on major roads have improved, and for those who do need to travel today, bus service is the best transit option. A few buses are still being detoured around trouble spots but most buses are not chained. For those buses that are chained for safety, we remind riders they can travel no faster than 25 mph and may not be on time. Buses are running on Sunday schedules in observance of Martin Luther King Day. You can follow the realtime locations of buses using the map on our website, trimet.org. Still expect some delays due to the conditions, dress warmly and check trimet.org/alerts for information about weather-related impacts. As of Noon today, MAX service remains suspended. Our crews are working to clear tracks and repair equipment, but we don’t have a timeline on when service will be restored. Shuttle buses are running on all MAX lines now, with most of the shuttles arriving every 45 minutes or more often. MAX riders should also consider using regular bus service if possible. These photos show the continued challenges with ice covering tracks in Downtown Portland, on SW Morrison and Yamhill, and near Providence Park. There are some spots where the rails are starting to peek through the ice or have been completely uncovered, but that is mainly a few feet here and there. Riders may see or have seen a MAX train running today as we make progress in clearing packed ice from our rails and switches, and get our MAX equipment working again. These trains cannot take riders, due to safety, as they are being used to test the system and clear the way for restoring service. For the most timely updates, please sign up for text/email alerts at trimet.org/email. ❄️
