Thousands of workers at Samsung Electronics, the worldโs largest chip maker and Koreaโs biggest company, have launched an indefinite strike. Originally planned as a three-day action, the strike has extended indefinitely after management refused to engage in talks with the workers.
So far, over 6,540 members of the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), the largest union at Samsung Electronics, have participated in the strike. The union represents about 30,000 workers, or 24% of all Samsung employees. The unionโs demands include a 5.6% basic pay raise for all members, a guaranteed day off on the unionโs founding day, and compensation for economic losses due to the strike.
Despite Samsungโs claims that the strike has not impacted production, the union reports disruptions on chip lines and that some equipment is running slower.
