CEO/Lead trainer at #MakeShots basketball training. Former B1G shooting coach. Retired educator. Working to positively impact basketball players #MakeShots
Thank you, @SuzyMerchant! To be able to work with the university where both of my parents went to school is unbelievable. Iām so thankful to your staff @kristinhaynie@Coach_Lockwood@CoachFantan for being so welcoming and interested in learning about shooting details! #MakeShots
Excited to talk offensive efficiency w/ @secorsig & his attention to detail on breaking down players shots.
PGA golfers have āswing docs.ā #MakeShots is same mentality!
Love that he even addresses: What do U tell Urself as a player when U miss?
Self talk & response matters!
Sounds good. You want the bear? Youāll get the bear. No respect shown, no respect given.
Youāre not in Boca Raton anymore. Welcome to the rivalry at 0-2.
I believe COVID is real, deadly, not the flu. I believe case, hospital, and death data. I think itās fair to have pauses/lockdowns/masks. I can think that and still believe K-12 should be open with sports. I donāt understand why it has to be one or the other with no middle ground
School is hard for kids/teachers/coaches right now. Add not having a season and it makes all of it harder on them. To extend 3 weeks n not even address or acknowledge the athletes/educators who every day are going through so many challenges is dismissive and shows poor leadership
School districts are in 4th and 15, down 7, on their own 20, with 15 seconds left. There is no good play to call. There are multiple options and all of them have issues/challenges. Lots of unknowns. What I do know is that educators will find a way, somehow, because we always have
AAU is the answer for some, not all. Some don't want to go that route, others don't have the means, some aren't good enough. Putting the name of your school across your chest, playing for the town you grew up in and w lifelong friends still matter to many teenagers in Michigan
I think the @MHSAA is in an awful position again. To have to put together dozens of plans during a pandemic is unbelievably hard. They are always choosing from a bunch of bad options. Having said that, I really think they need to consider a mid-Jan to mid-April winter season
IMO - Thereās no reason for the MHSAA to not to go to at least 6 divisions for basketball. If you can have 8 for FB, you can have 6 for BB.
To have schools playing w 1,000 more students is nuts when it can be avoided. Isnāt having 500+ more boys/girls a major advantage?
Thoughts from a night in the gym with HS players:
1. The emotional toll is real. Tears, anger, frustration. Difft for difft kids
2. They love AAU, but desperately want a HS season
3. They will keep working when no one is watching
Iām blessed to work w some damn special kids
Car after car of staff members lined up just to catch a glimpse of our students, families, and community. Organized and led by teachers, because thatās what they do. Thatās what makes educators special. Feel blessed to be a part of this team every day, but especially today
(1/9) Here is an unedited, unscripted brief look at what an in-season group workout looks like for our players.
A quick introduction video and then 8 short videos that show a portion of what we were working on during each segment #MakeShots
Dropped Myles off at his golf tourney. Love that in golf there are no screaming parents, no criticizing coaches, no belittling of officials. By rule, I canāt say anything. Heās out there to learn, grow, and battle adversity on his own. All youth sports could use some of thisā¦
The winter sports kid goes to school, in a mask, w/out many of the social aspects that make HS fun. They know being around 100's of kids could expose them to COVID/quarantine. They saw fall sports finish n spring sports will happen. Show an ounce of empathy n at least address them
This is a āweā not a āmeā award. On behalf of the Jamestown parents, students, and staff I was honored to receive the MEMSPA Region 12 Principal of the Year. It is a nice way for the work of our staff to be recognized. Itās not about me, itās about us. Thank you, MEMSPA!
Is there a worse complaint than, āteachers have summers off?ā
1. You chose your profession
2. Each profession has advantages and disadvantages
3. I was at school today on a random Wed. in July n almost half our staff was there
Go ahead and @ me, always willing to debate this one
Here's my not so deep, Friday thought: Stop posting hypothetic fall school scenarios. These are opinions of people predicting the unpredictable, 3 months away. They invoke unnecessary fear/anxiety into a school culture facing enough. Save it for behind the scenes #SimpleThoughts
My Friday thought. When interviewing a candidate for your district, focus on the things you canāt teach them. Not years of experience, where they went to school or what curriculum theyāve used. Coachable, collaborative, humble, listener, passionate, motivated
#NotSoSimpleMessage
Friday thought: If you close schools and leave the rest of the community open, I donāt think you will see a reduction in COVID numbers. Iām not talking about staffing or contact tracing. If the sole mitigation strategy is to close schools COVID data will get worse, not better
Started my āgratitude walksā this week. Very simple concept. Walk into a class, see something amazing, leave a note for the teacher letting them know Iām grateful for their work. Great things happen in classrooms all the time. Itās not about evidence or evaluation, #JustGratitude
Tough news for our HS/MS athletes. This is another disappointment. Check-in on them. See how they are doing. Many have worked tirelessly for these moments which won't come again. It can also be confusing for them to see neighboring states and colleges playing when they cannot
Hereās my not so deep, Friday thought: M-STEP this, embargo that. Spare me. Those of us in the trenches have 10 data pieces in front of us everyday more impactful to student learning than the M-STEP. Our focus is student learning, growing better people, not M-STEP #SimpleMessage
Hereās a deeper then normal, Friday thought: Iām worried about the inability of our society to be happy. It seems like we always need more, one better/bigger, envy of others, another promotion, better Instagram story. Try to find joy in whatās right in front of you
#SimpleMessage
I consider this to be an official endorsement of #MakeShots from one of my favorites! Thanks to @BSB2015 for the awesome gift. Itās almost like @IsiahThomas knew I was holding out on The Last Dance due to my Bad Boys loyalty! Thank you for all of the birthday messages and visits!
State Champs! Amazing season for @HudsonvilleB. @jacitubergen completely changed the game w 16 3rd-qtr points in one of the best quarters you will see in a state final. Huge conversion from Joldersma to @ashlynnebailey after Renaissance cut it to 2 late #EaglePride#StateChamps
HS players - I know you waited 11 months to play. That build-up may have impacted some of you mentally n you didnāt play 1 or 2 of your best games. Relax. Trust the work and know it will pay off. You can be disappointed in the last game AND confident for the next game #MakeShots
Parent-Teacher Conference week is draining on teachers. Late nights n lots of time away from home. Itās the perfect opportunity for principals to show their gratitude for all their staff does. Doesnāt have to be grand or magical, just let them know they are appreciated
COLLEGE PLAYERS AND COACHES
#MakeShots would love to partner with you. Take a look to find out all the ways we are currently doing so with college players and coaches!
What a classic Rockford ā3ā to basically win the state title.
Great ball movement, passing up good shots for a great shot, and one of the best shooters in the state @gracelyons85 with the biggest shot in school history!
The dagger 3 to win the State Championship!!!
Rockford 2024 G Grace Lyons (Ferris State commit)šŖš
D1 Girls State Final: #2 Rockford (28-1) beat #1 West Bloomfield (25-2) 40-36
@RockGBB@RockfordAD@gracelyons85
Got on a plane to start Spring Break this morning. Family split up in different spots on the plane. Who sits right next to me? Sam.
A student from our school! Small world. What an awesome way to start Spring Break talking with one of our students #JamestownPride
Myles Secor Appreciation Post - My son has impressed me w his team-first approach as a freshman. He went from playing, to not much, to starting, but never complained/blamed his coach and his energy on the bench is always positive. The season is a grind and I respect his approach!
So proud of the work of @AllySecor in the classroom. Itās allowed her an opportunity to choose from some great colleges. Was great to see the first one, and a big one, roll in yesterday. Exciting times ahead!
The best shooter to ever live has just shot 8/41 (19.5%) over the last 2 games. NO PLAYER, MS, HS, college, or professional, should expect to play a season without a stretch like this. The key is to NEVER lose confidence and know your shot well enough to end the slump #MakeShots
During recent HS sports shutdowns, I've increased the # of workouts each wk for my small group of players as allowed per guidelines. Not adding cost. It's not about $. I simply care about them. I want them in the gym, around the game they love, supporting their mental well-being
Here we go! Iām off to hand out my annual holiday gift to staff, which is a āGift of Time.ā I think itās the 7th year of theseS It gives staff an hour to do whatever they choose and allows me to see what an hour in their shoes is like #ShareOurStory#WhatMakesJamestownSpecial
We were thrilled to hear of Elle Hudson Secor making her entrance yesterday! I canāt say enough about the strength of my brother, and especially his wife, through the trials of having a baby in the heart of NYC during a pandemic. We all feel very thankful and blessed today.
Been to the Final 4, World Series, B1G championships, bowl games, but this might top them all. Golf. USA. Golf and America together. A football crowd at a golf match. A trip my Dad and I talked about, but never got to make. Now, my son and I will @rydercupusa#UltimateBucketList
#MakeShots continues to grow! Iām excited to hire one of my former players,@AustinMThornton of @MSU_Basketball to join @Mr_Krynicki. While our focus is still shooting, Austin will take the lead of our "overall skill development" branch. Contact me to schedule a workout with him!
Favorite video of the day. When I coached at Cedar, we talked about E.Y.T. (Enjoy Your Teammates). When players are more excited for others success than theirs, thatās special chemistry. Look at the excitement/dancing of @HallockTheryn when teammate @allicarlson_3 makes a 3!
Hereās my not so deep, Friday thought: The phrase āM-STEP prepā makes me shudder. Iām disappointed that our system is set up in a way that puts a higher emphasis on one day of learning vs. the other 179 days. Doesnāt seem logical
#SimpleMessage
Awfully proud of Myles. Heās really become obsessed with the game in the last 2 months and put so much time in when no one is watching. Great for him to see some of that pay off with an 81 today. We need those small victories as athletes to keep that hunger and motivation going!
My guy @CarsonLutz11 drives over 2 hours each way 2 x month from Milford. His shot n confidence continue to grow.Tonight, he became the 7th person to finish āWashington 50ā in under 4:45. Dedicated, locked into his goals, and has turned himself into a big-time shooter #MakeShots
Check out the WZZM13 story tonight all about my wifeās business @DinnerGirlAngie! What a testament to putting all of your heart and passion into your work. Our family is beyond proud of her #DinnerGirl
@avery_zeinstra is the kind of player every coach loves to be in the gym with. Awesome kid, amazing player, great family, and 1 of the best shooters Iāve ever been in the gym with in 25 yrs as a coach. For her to hit 1,000 on a night where she had 21 pts on six made 3ās is perfect
I don't have a Miss Basketball vote. I don't feel qualified and I'm also biased.
But I do know what @macybrown_7 is doing this yr is something special. I could make a highlight video like this every game.
Last night - 31 pts on 14 shots, 50% FG, 93% FT, 67% from 3 #MakeShots30
My thoughts and prayers are with the Meltonās and our Jamestown family today.
Tears are prayers too. They travel to God when we canāt speak - Psalm 56:8
"Control what you can control"
"Somewhere, someone is happy with less than you have"
Once again, a new challenge is in front of us as educators and as coaches. Students, players, and families will be watching closely how we respond to it. The choice is ours.
This. You canāt in good faith extend the fall season to make sure itās finished, play the full spring season, and jam the winter season into 5-6 weeks of competition. Extend the winter season even if it crosses over with spring for a couple of weeks.
4 days and 189 holes of golf with Myles at Swan Lake Resort in Indiana. Lots of close matches between us. This is our 2nd straight yr here and we love the customer service, accommodations, food, and golf courses. Itās vacation season for the Secorās and this was an awesome start!
(1) Iām excited to announce the hiring of an additional coach for #MakeShots. I canāt keep up w the demand for training n am excited to bring @Mr_Krynicki onto staff so we can impact more players. Denny brings over 20 yrs of experience as an educator and coach. He played college
Here's my not so deep, Friday thought: Average tenure for an administrator in a district is now under 3 years. The lack of a structural plan to provide coaching and mentoring is 100% part of that problem. Leadership and the principalship can be lonlely. Change is needed #Simple
This guy plays in his first high school golf match tomorrow afternoon. I hope the game continues to bring him joy and teaches him about life. Heās never been much for advice from his caddy!
18 classrooms, 18 gratitude notes to teachers. If you just stop and look, through a grateful lens, it takes 30 seconds to see something in a classroom that deserves appreciation. Never miss a chance to tell someone they are appreciated. Loved my #GratitudeWalk today
Hereās my not so deep, Friday thought: This shouldnāt be hard. Halloween should be the last Saturday in October every year. It has no place in the beginning, middle, or end of the work week. Let kids enjoy the holiday without having to rally the next morning #SimpleMessage
We will hear more from the @MHSAA, but without a MAJOR change to the winter/spring/AAU calendar, this all but ends the hope for HS bball this yr. I'd been optimistic all along, but I don't feel the same now. Thinking logically, why do we think Feb. 21 will be any different?
1. Weāve been in school all day, everyday, for over 100 days
2. Cāmon, Wolf. The clear question is why can so many other states successfully run youth and high school sports without the rise in cases we are having? The difference canāt be the very thing everyone else is doing.
1st time working w @max_perez3 this summer and he walks in and sets a record at my new favorite drill, "6-Spot Streak 3's" w 37. A drill where every shot carries a make/miss consequence. Can't wait to see him when @CoachAlbertIT squad comes up to GR the next few years #MakeShots
I've never said, "______ is/isn't a D1-2-3 player." Why? I don't coach college. I don't know their rosters. I don't sit in their recruiting meetings. You know how many offers it takes at any level? One. You know who decides on that offer? People on those coaching staffs. Not me
Congrats to @HallockTheryn on reaching 1,000 points. The best part of her reaching that amazing milestone is that scoring is probably the 4th or 5th best part of her game. Think about that for a second #MakeShots14
Watching 2 HS games and charting shots. Keeping an eye on MSU vs. UM. All while being a guest on @FOX17Zach radio show. Just another Thursday night in the Secor house. Love that @DinnerGirlAngie joined in! Closest thing we get to date night during basketball season! #MakeShots
Annual trip in my Ferris gear to watch Schlump @CoachBronks@FerrisMBBALL play GVSU. Love the culture he has built. GR kids like @eazye2021@jimmy_scholler@Mykelbingham7 playing big roles. Love their attacking style. Now 11 of the last 13 vs GVSU. Thatās dominating your rival!
It may sound bizarre, but one of the things Iām loving most about retirement is consistently working out. Instead of rushing to/from, trying to squeeze it in, or just skipping it entirely, I can plan my day around it. Good for the soul
Hereās my not so deep, Friday thought. Last day of school. My Dad once told me that we never know how many years weāll be able to serve in education so enjoy each one. Iām simply going to end this one full of gratitude for the Jamestown students, parents, and staff
#SimpleMessage
(1/2) #MakeShots is excited to announce the hiring of 2 trainers! Beyond excited to have @coachmsoukup and @trevor_chalmers joining @Mr_Krynicki and I. We get two educators, high-character men, and hoops junkies! Here is some info on both of them. More to come! #MakeShots
MSU b-ball wasnāt always like this. This isnāt Duke, UK, or UNC. Never take a championship for granted. Coach Izzo just won championship/banner #22. Not very often you get to witness the best coach in your schoolās history. Special one to enjoy it with the Secorās
#TrophyGame
Bang!!!
First, congrats to all the players, especially @CadenceDykstra over here on the west side. They are all worthy.
Iām just so happy for @macybrown_7, her family, @EGR_GirlsBBall, @M_B_A_Bball, and @umichwbball. Sheās an amazing player, great human, and deserving of this!
The winner of the @MickMcCabe1 Miss Basketball award is @macybrown_7! What an incredible and well deserved accomplishment to cap off a legendary career. Macy Brown IS Miss Basketball! š
Congratulations to @HallockTheryn for an amazing yr. Loved having her in the program the last 7 months. She put in the time this off-season n it paid off. Whatever all-____ list anyone is making for the season, sheās on it. Period. Excited to get to work this spring! #MakeShots14
Man...I haven't stopped smiling since I heard this! Having watched her play w my daughter way back in the Cedar Springs days, you just knew she was destined for something like this. It was great to be in the gym with her today to see her so excited about the decision! #MakeShots
If you have 12 offers of schools that you donāt want to go to, you have 0 offers.
If you have 1 offer and itās a school you want to go to, you have 1 offer.
12 is not always better than 1. It not only takes one, but the right one #MakeShots
Delayed Spring Break 2020
- Private pool
- Steps to a private beach, water temps in low 80ās
- Sundeck
- 90 degree weather
- County with 1/2 the COVID cases as the one I live in
- No reason to see any other humans than my favorite 3. Thatās how I like to vacation #VeroBeach
Any academic plan a school district puts in place will be too much for some families and not enough for others. You better accept that as a reality. If you are trying to come up with a perfect plan, it doesn't exist. Stop trying. Do the best you can, based on your situation
(1) I have lots of words and emotions from today, but the best I can give you is it felt great to be back supporting kids. They need us now more than ever and we were there for them.
Iām so proud of our staff as this isnāt easy. This is really hard work and itās OK to say that.
A HUGE smile came across my face when I saw @allicarlson_3 walk in the gym for some light #MakeShots work today after being gone for nearly 4 months. All those who have coached her know what I mean because of the kind of kid she is @M_B_A_Bball@mertzieklein@CoachTHammond!
Saying goodbye to Sās as they left our school today was one of the most surreal experiences I've had in 22 years of education. We didn't see any of this coming, the world I'm sending them out into has changed, and I'm not sure what it will be like when they come back #Education
What an experience. Unlike anything Iāve ever done. We talked confidence. We talked mental health. Players were honest n vulnerable. They read about, discussed, n built an action plan to build confidence. Excited for another group tmrw and future sessions #MakeShotsConfidenceCamp
Wow! One of the closest votes in Miss Basketball history. 2,370 points for @2_gabbyreynolds and 2,313 for @LilyZeinstra.
Congrats to Gabby for helping West Michigan go back-to-back with @macybrown_7. Congrats to Lily for an amazing season and career at Byron Center.
There are big game performances and then there is whatever that was.
On the road, top 25 showdown, vs. in-state rival, and @HallockTheryn goes for 25 points (23 in the 2nd half), 4 assists, and just 1 turnover.
Big time players make big time plays in big time games #MakeShots
A tradition unlike any other...Daddy/Daughter vacation for the 12th straight summer w @AllySecor. Michigan Adventure, to Niagara Falls, Mall of America, the U.P., LPGA Championship, and plenty of others. This year, we try to finalize this college decision! #MasksAndSanitizer
Just saw a ācoachā get kicked out of the Macker in a game w 9 year olds. Official handled it well. Thank God on this Sunday for giving me the perspective to not be that guy. But before i get too high and mighty, I once did get kicked out of a freshmen game as the varsity coach
