Washington, DC
Replying to @sciencedems
Cutting American science and research is not a good idea--it's dangerous. When we know less, we are less prepared for the next threat. Most are in agreement; science can save lives. So why does the president continue to risk our safety?

Big step forward for our CREATE AI Act! My bipartisan bill with @JayObernolte advanced out of @sciencedems last week. It would help researchers, students, and more access the trusted, high-quality data and compute needed to develop AI safely and responsibly.

Ranking Member Lofgren Demands Reversal of Changes Made to NSF Award Policies (Washington, DC) – Yesterday, Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren sent a letter to National Science Foundation (NSF) Acting Director Brian Stone demanding that NSF rescind its proposed amendments to its Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG). On June 24, NSF posted a change to the PAPPG that would implement provisions of the Office of Management and Budget's proposed rule that aims to make sweeping changes to how federal grants are awarded. This proposed rule was initially announced on May 29, and the comment period does not end until July 13. “NSF jumping the gun and issuing proposed PAPPG amendments before the OMB rule is finalized – let alone before the public comment period has concluded – is a clear sign that the Administration in general, and NSF specifically, have no interest in legitimately considering the input of the impacted community,” wrote Ranking Member Lofgren in the letter. “The only acceptable course of action at this point is to rescind the draft guidance from the Federal Register. Failing to do so would put NSF’s proposed draft guidance on dubious legal footing. Ultimately, the downfall of the proposed OMB rule would be a victory for American science, but an indictment of the Trump Administration’s competence and respect for the rule of law.” Read the letter democrats-science.house.gov/… @NSF @ScienceDems @RepZoeLofgren

Universities that expand America's STEM workforce should not have their funding cut because of “DEI,” but that’s what the Trump administration is doing.

Instead of trying to find "research fraud" as a pretext to cut lifesaving science, Republicans should be investigating the people who are wrongfully cutting science funding.

As a parent, I’m experiencing the struggle of raising kids in the digital age. One of the biggest challenges we face is figuring out how to limit screen time across different devices. I’m pushing to create a common standard for screen time limits so parents are able to understand and address the amount of time their kids spend online.

AI policy making in Congress should be centered around properly researching and combatting the negative impacts of this technology. I’m proud that @ScienceDems passed the following bills and amendments I presented at yesterday’s markup to ensure that we are putting working families ahead of large corporations.

ICYMI: I called out Republicans for threatening to sink a bill because of my data centers amendment. My amendment would have helped us understand energy and water use at data centers – an issue that is important for our constituents. Republicans are silencing the needs of our constituents. rollcall.com/2026/06/26/fede…

Rep. @ValerieFoushee is exactly right. Federal AI testing should measure not just what these systems do but whether we can explain how they work and catch where they fail. Important statement on explainability and interpretability ⬇️

It’s shocking but true: we do not know what AI is doing to our kids’ ability to think. But it’s already being put into the classroom. We need to understand the impacts of AI on students before we let a whole generation fall behind.

WATCH: I called out Republicans in our Science, Space, and Technology hearing. 👀 Republicans THREATENED to pull a bill I had an amendment on water and energy use at data centers. They also flat out rejected another amendment of mine that would provide multilingual materials for AI literacy and education because they thought it was "DEI." Members are elected to vote. There should be no hiding, no threats to pull bills, and no silencing our constituents. Period.

Republicans want to talk about fraud, but they will not talk about the fraud being committed against the American people by the Trump administration. Accountability should apply across the board, not just when it is convenient. People in #OH13 and families across the country deserve better.

Our AI reality isn’t sci-fi in a distant future — it’s here now & it’s here to stay. That’s why I co-lead the LIFT AI Act: to empower students & educators to become responsible AI users. When our kids & teachers are literate in next gen tools, they can use tech for good.

American innovation depends on investing in the scientists and researchers who drive discovery. But the Trump Administration has given out 60-70% fewer grant awards than in previous years, threatening critical research and putting our global competitiveness at risk. Now is the time we should be strengthening America's research enterprise, not undermining it.
