I've got a bold claim: @rodarmor is wrong.
The supply of rare sats he reports in the Ordinals Docs is not consistent with the definition.
Casey reports the following rare sat supplies:
- Uncommon: 808,262
- Rare: 369
- Epic: 3
- Legendary: 0
- Mythic: 1
The rare figure is wrong. It should be 401.
If we take the uncommon supply of 808,262 to be accurate, this means he took the snapshot at block 808,666. At that point, there were 401 rares, which occur every 2016 blocks (difficulty adjustment period).
Maybe I'm missing something? 🤔

I propose we add a Hal Finney satribute, just as we do for Satoshi Nakamoto mined blocks.
For those who don't know, Hal Finney was an early cryptographer and bitcoin pioneer. He worked closely with Satoshi himself, and he mined the first non-Satoshi block (block 78). One of his many claims to fame is he predicted NFTs in 1993 🤯

The idea for a Hal Finney satribute is not new. But the issue--as folks like @LeonidasNFT have rightly pointed out--is that we need better research to confirm which blocks are his. I hope this post moves the ball forward.
According to my analysis, we can be certain Hal mined 127 blocks. How do we know this? Well, we can look at @a_greenberg's seminal piece on Hal that he wrote for Forbes in 2014.

The article includes a screenshot of Hal Finney's wallet client, which allows us to confirm 12 mined blocks (including block 78).
The good news is we can follow how those 12 block rewards were spent to expand our list of known blocks. For example, the block 78 reward was spent in block 130667 along with 361, 728, 777, and 25 other direct coinbase UTXOs. If we know Hal mined block 78, he must've mined the other blocks he spent along with it.

We can then repeat this process with the other blocks to arrive at the 127 total. (I'll comment on this post with the full list.)
My proposal is we have a special designation for block 78 and then another tag for the remaining Hal blocks.
To be clear, I'm not suggesting my analysis is gospel. Others should comment and validate to make sure we're good.

I'm scratching my head why we separate 1st transaction and block 9 rarities. They're effectively one and the same. Only block 9 sats were spent in the 1st transaction mined in block 170, and all block 9 sats that are in circulation were the ones spent in the 1st transaction. (the remaining 40 BTC block 9 haven't made it past the first couple hundred blocks)
Ultimately this is confusing for the market. I propose sites like @ord_io and @satingio eliminate the 1st transaction label to avoid the redundancy

I was prepared to tell a story about how more and more miners are sequestering the uncommon sat of their block reward.
The numbers tell a slightly different story.
It's true that April 2024 saw the most miner sequester activity ever (67% of all mined blocks).
However, miners have been on top of rare sats from the nearly the beginning.
F2Pool recorded the first miner sequester on block 790173 on May 17, 2023. Surprisingly, 8 other mining pools started sequestering uncommons in that month.
As you can see in the charts, it's puzzling to me why miners stopped sequestering starting in Nov 2023. Sure fees were elevated but the cost of a sequester is extremely low.
I'm also surprised a higher number of distinct miners were sequestering sats back in 2023, peaking at 12 in Oct 2023. Maybe this is somehow due to the miner labels (via mempool.space) but idk.
One miner in particular has been a mega jeeter on @MagicEden recently. Stay tuned for more info on that 👀

I got asked a question about block 777 sats. Pretty interesting - it looks like the entire sat chunk has stayed intact since it was mined, and now sits on a utxo from block 778,692.
So it's technically in circulation but all the sats are tied up in the fate of one utxo.
- 1 uncommon, 1 black sat
- 50 alphas & omegas
- 5,000 digit palindromes (260 3 digit, 8 2 digit, 0 perf palinceptions)
- 421 name palindromes

I completely agree with this
I think there's a huge opportunity in the black sats market with uncommons doubling in price over the last weeks and black sats hovering around the same price levels.
The supplies and properties of black sats are similar to uncommon sats, so it's only natural for their prices to be pegged.
I believe it's only a matter of time until the free market rectifies this gap, hence... a window of opportunity.

Here's the breakdown if anyone's curious:
Definitions:
- Difficulty adjustments are every 2,016 blocks (rare)
- Halvings are every 210,000 blocks (epic)
- A cycle is defined as a difficulty adjustment and halving happening on the same block (legendary)
- 6,300,000 blocks will be mined in total
The numbers:
--> Mythic: 1
Block 0
--> Legendary: 5
6 blocks divisible by 210k and 2016, but 1 is the mythic sat
--> Epic: 27
33 divisible by 210k but 6 are either legendary or mythic
--> Rare: 3,432

A palinception is a series of palindromes within a larger palindrome, e.g. 121-434-121. A "pure palinception" is the recurrence of a single palindrome within the larger one. So 121-121-121 is a pure but 121-434-121 is not

Then I looked and HOLY SATS there's a perfect, unbroken chunk of 100M sats from block 9 on the 65 BTC UTXO, which confirmed 12 weeks ago.

appreciate it. i doubt a place like @DuneAnalytics could pull this off b/c it requires a heck of a lot of computation, whereas i think theyre more focused on supplying the data. i could be wrong though
