Thanks @lennysan for a great convo on building consumer products and how AI allows us to rethink what’s possible with Google Search!
🎧 Inside @Google's AI turnaround with @rmstein Robby is VP of Product at @Google where he oversees all things Google Search—including the new AI Overviews, AI Mode, search ranking, Google Lens, and more. Previously, he led consumer products at @Instagram, where he and his teams built Stories, Reels, Close Friends, and other products now used by billions. We discuss: 🔸 Why Google’s AI products are suddenly taking off after years of stagnation 🔸 How AI is expanding Search rather than replacing it, contrary to what many predicted 🔸 The three product principles that have helped Robby build multiple billion-user products 🔸 Inside Instagram’s decision to build its own version of Snapchat Stories 🔸 His mantra of “relentless improvement” 🔸 How Google developed AI Mode from concept to launch in just one year 🔸 Why most teams give up too early on potentially transformative products Listen now 👇 • YouTube: piped.video/kOnsqqVbIeY • Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/2Ne… • Apple: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… Thank you to our wonderful sponsors for supporting the podcast: 🏆 @TrustVanta — Automate compliance. After many years of building, I've found one thing that most reliably leads to exceptional products: a culture of relentless improvement. People often point to big breakthroughs or one-time changes to a product, but from what I've seen it all starts with a mindset of ruthless improvement and constantly asking "how can this be better?" When paired with the right ambition, it's that intense care and focus for months or years beforehand that leads to the breakouts we all see.

Nano Banana in Google Lens can do some remarkable things. For e.g. in transforming a black cat into a chrome cat, you’ll see how the model can grasp the physical world. In this case, it used its knowledge of how this cat is likely shaped under all that fur, imagined the plausible surrounding environment based on the cat's setting, then applied its understanding of materials and lighting to reflect a living room environment on the polished chrome. This isn’t just a chrome filter, it’s a complete reconstruction of reality from world knowledge.

Definitely check out the new tappable product and place cards in AI Mode. Searching for something like “best foldable camping chair that would fit in a backpack for under $100” brings up a full breakdown of relevant products and real-time info that meet the particulars of what you’re looking for!

4/ We’re also expanding our Web Guide experiment in Labs, which is a new approach to intelligently surfacing and organizing the most useful web links with AI – even for your hardest queries. We’ve gotten some really positive feedback as we’ve tested this on the “Web” tab. So in the future, opted-in users will start seeing it on the main “All” tab when our systems think it will be helpful for a query. Opt in here →labs.google.com/search/exper…

(3/4) When you’re looking for inspiration, just show or tell AI Mode what you’re looking for with a picture, text, or both to get relevant, visual suggestions. From there, you can conversationally browse, refine or build on your search and explore shoppable options and links to buy.

5/ We spend a ton of time focused on this question of when and how to show links, and how we can really make the web shine. It will continue to be an ongoing effort as AI Mode and the Search Results Page evolves. As always, appreciate the feedback!

(3/4) We’re also rolling out agentic features for shopping in Search. When you’re tracking the price of an item from eligible merchants and it drops below your budget, agentic checkout can handle buying it on the retailer site securely on your behalf (and with your permission, of course).

2/ I’m excited to return to Google after starting my career here 17 years ago and take on this role at such a pivotal time for AI. I believe Google is uniquely positioned to create magical experiences for people seeking answers, making decisions, and exploring their interests.

(2/4) Beyond inspiration, if you need help deciding between products, AI Mode can create detailed, side-by-side comparisons, pulling insights from shopping data and customer reviews to make your choice easier.

(2/4) This experience is powered by Gemini 2.5’s multimodal capabilities and our visual understanding in Search. Using a new technique we’re calling "visual search fan-out,” AI Mode is able to analyze more objects in an image and better understand the context of your question.

2️⃣AI is a powerful engine for curiosity and is expansionary. Fostering that curiosity is a personal mission, but it’s also a core product principle for Search. When you share more about what you want to find with AI Mode or use Lens, the model can understand nuance and help you discover more diverse and helpful info and sites – more so than if you did a standard keyword search.
